carotid artery???

Say, for example if a person was in a severe accident e.g plane or car crash; something similar etc & the carotid artery was disconnected from the brain, would this leave the person brain dead ?
----------

Should the carotid artery be severed, it is highly likely, the person will bleed to death. There would a rapid loss of blood. Arteries that are cut tend to have the blood squirt out because, unlike veins, they do not have valves.  (+ info)

Carotid Artery?

I recently had a stroke which caused me to loose part of the vision in my right eye. I had testing done with no found cause or other damage. However I was able to take a glimpse of the report and at the bottom one of the docs commented on how "the high velocity of blood flow in my Carotid artery was surprising" that he has never seen before. I asked my doc if that was dangerous and if it could have an effect on me, doc said it was nothing to worry about. Not sure if I should believe the doc. Do you have any idea?Any info on this at all would be greatly appreciated, TY

Why might my carotid artery hurt and how do I fix it?

I've been doing a lot of cardio lately, and my carotid artery has been hurting lately. Is it possible that it is wearing down or is that just an extremely stupid question for me to ask?
----------

It's not stupid. It is not wearing down. It may be surrounding tissue that is hurting, however if you are certain it is your artery you should consult your doctor. I don't wish to alarm you but there can be serious reasons for the pain. If the pain increases or you develop a headache, dizziness or weakness call an ambulance. You are probably fine, just a mild hypochondriac like me, but better safe than sorry.  (+ info)

What would cause pain to shoot trough the carotid artery in the neck to the head?

This hasn't happened to me recently but a few months ago it did. I would get a very sharp but quick pain from what seems to be my left carotid artery leading from my neck to my head. Does anyone know what would cause this?
----------

These are more common than people know. I've had them myself. Sometimes it can be cause by a pinched nerve in the neck. Nerve endings are all over the body, so if one is pinched it can travel somewhere else in your body. It's nothing to worry about, but if it keeps bothering you please see your doctor.  (+ info)

Can the heart rate increase by pressing on the vagus nerve or carotid artery?

I periodically check my heart rate and often times by applying pressure to my carotid artery (on my neck). Many times, I have noticed that when I first put my finger there, the rate would seem slow, then suddenly begin speeding up. I typically measure it at rest. I don't have any heart problems nor arrhythmias. Is what I am doing dangerous?

Thanks.

At what age are you too old for carotid artery surgery?

I know an 87 year old individual with blockage in the carotid artery that is causing dizziness and diminished vision. Could she have the artery cleared at her age? What are the risks?
----------

She definitely needs to discuss this with the surgeon and the anesthesiologist. If otherwise healthy she may be able to have the surgery. If she has many medical problems the risks are always greater. Either way there is always a risk of a small part of the blockage breaking away and causing an embolism(blood clot) in the brain or lungs or other parts of the body. She really needs to weigh the benefits and risks with her dr. Good luck to her.  (+ info)

My child has been referred to a Neurosurgeon due to a narrow carotid artery in the neck?

My son has been seen by 3 different doctors has had a CT scan, MRI and MRA. He has been suffering with a recurring headache for a month. He was referred to a Neurosurgeon because his carotid artery in his left side of the neck is narrower or congenitally smaller than the one on the right. I have not been told what is caused what the results can be or what we can do to fix that. Does anyone have a child that has gone through something like this.
----------

Those are questions you ask his doctors.  (+ info)

Can you give me more detail about the carotid artery?

I've saw Martial Arts techniques where you can knock someone out by pushing in on their carotid artery. But, what I don't know is, where EXACTLY is this? How far in do I need to push? And what side is it? Both? If anyone can give me pictures of a person at a few different angles and point out where it is, that would be a great help.
Umm, "Mom"... The carotid artery is on the neck, I know that. I dunno about you but I've never grown a big toe from my neck.
----------

Left side, big toe...squeeze as hard as you can...Voila'  (+ info)

----------
