Catatonia?

How do you get? What causes it?
How do you act if your catatonic?
Any cures? Do you out grow it?

Thanks!
Please don't copy and paste things from wikipedia :D I think I'll understand it better in someone's own words.
Oh and someone told me that catatonics tend to violent towards themselves and others? Is that true...or not? Thanks again!
----------

There are a wide variety of psychiatric and substance-related disorders and general medical conditions that can cause catatonic behavior. Catatonia is a symptom rather than a disorder itself. For years it was primarily associated with Schizophrenia but recent studies have shown that it is most commonly seen in severe Mood Disorders. There are several catatonic symptoms. In catatonic stupor the person is mute, unresponsive and motionless. Catatonic excitement is the opposite: the person engages in repeated, excited and purposeless motor activity. Catatonic posturing is when the person assumes a strange position and stays that way (such as standing with their arms outstretched for a long period of time). The person may hold a rigid position and resists attempts to be moved or they may constantly repeat other people's words or imitate others movements. The "cure" is to treat the underlying condition that is causing it.  (+ info)

Have you ever experienced a state of catatonia?

I have been diagnosed with major depression. When I get very upset or suicidal, I sometimes have a very odd feeling. I can lie in bed and stare at the ceiling for hours and not move an inch. A lot of times I hold my breath for a while without knowing it. The few occasions it's happened to me with someone else around, I've noticed it's very difficult to talk. Is this a catatonic state? How common is it in young people with severe depression? Have you experienced it and what was it like to you?
BZREIMER--Sounds just like me. I'm 17 and was diagnosed with depression at 10, but I've had it my entire life. I'm learning to deal with it on my own because the hospitals, medication, and therapy do nothing for me. It doesn't happen very often anymore, but I spent almost the entire summer before last like this (before I was hospitalized.) I hope things improve for you.

boomurdead23--Maybe, but it sounds more like a trance to me. When this happens to me, I might as well be braindead. No thought goes on whatsoever, which is part of why it's hard to talk--takes a while to figure out what the other person is saying.

aangel7--It's a symptom of more disorders than schizophrenia. Google it.

=O =O =O Oh. My. God. I thought i was the only one. I've been depressed for three years now and just this year it started. After school i'd just go up to my room turn off the lights open the blinds and lie on my bed staring at the roof for 3-5 hours depending on when my mom got home. It felt like I just couldn't move and I didn't want to. I just wanted to die or slip into a coma. this went on for three and a half months on a daily basis and still pretty often. I have no idea if it is common but i'm sixteen with severe depression and it happens a lot to me. Just know you aren't alone. And it sounds pretty catatonic.  (+ info)

What would happen if you tickled someone during catatonia?

would they respond? laugh?
----------

I think it would depend on how deep they were in a catatonic state and if they were ticklish or not. I hope I'd respond, because I bet catatonia is boring.  (+ info)

Features of catatonia may also be seen in Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) which is an uncommon (but potentially lethal) reaction to some medications used to treat major mental illnesses. NMS is considered a medical emergency since 25% of untreated cases result in death. Catatonia can also be present in individuals suffering from a number of other physical and emotional conditions such as drug intoxication, depression, and schizophrenia. It is most commonly associated with mood disorders.

Description
In catatonic stupor, motor activity may be reduced to zero. Individuals avoid bathing and grooming, make little or no eye contact with others, may be mute and rigid, and initiate no social behaviors. In catatonic excitement the individual is extremely hyperactive although the activity seems to have no purpose. Violence toward him/herself or others may also be seen.
The causes of catatonia are largely unknown although research indicates that brain structure and function are altered in this condition. While this and other information point to a physical cause, none has yet been proven. A variety of medical conditions also may lead to catatonia including head trauma, cerebrovascular disease, encephalitis, and certain metabolic disorders. NMS is an adverse side effect of certain antipsychotic drugs.  (+ info)

what is catatonia please give me as much detailed information that you can give me?

on what it is to be in a catatonic state?
what are effective forms of treatments for catatonia
----------

If this is for a paper you cannot use me as a resource! Catatonia is a severe mental response generally to trauma. It presents with a person who remains in one position until they are manually moved by another person. They do not eat, drink, pee or move. They do not respond in any way to their surroundings/people. Obviously, this needs treatment. If you are speaking about someone you feel is headed in this direction, get them to a mental health facility ASAP.  (+ info)

what is catatonia mean in the medical field?

Patients with catatonia may experience an extreme loss of motor skills or even constant hyperactive motor activity. Catatonic patients will sometimes hold rigid poses for hours and will ignore any external stimuli. Patients with catatonic excitement can die of exhaustion if not treated. Patients may also show stereotyped, repetitive movements. They may show specific types of movement such as waxy flexibility, in which they maintain positions after being placed in them by someone else, or gegenhalten (lit. "counterhold"), in which they resist movement in proportion to the force applied by the examiner. They may repeat meaningless phrases or speak only to repeat what the examiner says.
While catatonia is only identified as a form of schizophrenia in present psychiatric classifications, it is increasingly recognized as a syndrome with many faces. It appears as the Kahlbaum syndrome (retarded catatonia), malignant catatonia (neuroleptic malignant syndrome, toxic serotonin syndrome), and excited forms (delirious mania, catatonic excitement, oneirophrenia). It has also been recognized as grafted on to autistic spectrum disorders.  (+ info)
