FAQ - Cell Transformation, Neoplastic

When can a tumor be non-cellular or non-neoplastic? And how can some neoplasms be cell free?

So basically, I've got a bio midterm tomorrow, and so in the process of studying, I realized I completely don't get that! Even my bio friends are like, what....? So if ANYONE can help us out here, that would be fantastic! Thanks!

The word tumor is defined (in Answers.com) as "An abnormal growth of tissue resulting from uncontrolled, progressive multiplication of cells and serving no physiological function; a neoplasm." So your teacher is playing with semantics here.

The only way a "mass" could be non-cellular would be if it were cystic - - a contained area of fluid. We see this with some ovarian tumors which may be benign or malignant. The benign ones are ovarian serous cystadenomas or mucinous cystadenomas which can be quite large tumor masses. These do contain cells however in the membranous sacs surrounding the fluid

neoplastic follicular cell mcq step 1?

A 28-year-old man discovers a mass in his neck while buttoning his shirt collar. Physical examination reveals a 2 cm mass in one thyroid lobe, which does not concentrate radioisotopes on a thyroid scan. Aspiration of the nodule demonstrates small “solid balls” of neoplastic follicular cells. Careful examination of these tissue balls reveals that they contain microscopic blood vessels and fibrous stroma in their centers. Which of the following is the most likely diagnosis?
A. Follicular carcinoma
B. Hashimoto disease
C. Medullary carcinoma
D. Papillary carcinoma
E. Thyroid adenoma

Difference between Neoplastic and Dysplastic cells?

I have a pretty good grasp on what dysplasis/dysplastic cells are but I can't quite seem to grasp how neoplasia/neoplastic cells are different.

Our teach did a really bad job of explaining it and was no help when I asked his this question specifically - I don't think he really knows. Thanks for the help.
----------

GoBlue- There is a difference between neoplastic and dysplastic.
Dysplastic = abnormal growth or development of existing tissue.
Neoplastic = relates to a new growth or tumor.
"Dys" mean abnormal. "Neo" means new.
For example, in the cervix of the uterus, normal cells may undergo abnormal or dysplastic change which is not yet cancer, When sometimes the dysplastic changes worsen and a tumor forms, like a cancer of the cervix, the new tumor is a neoplastic change or neoplasm, arising from previous dysplastic changes.

What does it mean when my pap smear says: endocervical cells/ transformation zone component not seen?

I don't want to embarrass you, but you almost certainly have a bacterial vaginosis.

I've now devoted my life to helping people, as so many medics just don't understand womens problems - and I give away my book to women who are concerned.

To discover more about the symptoms, causes and dangers, you can download my free 20 page book here: http://bacterial-vaginosis-free-book.blogspot.com/

With the help of my husband, an herbal researcher, I pulled together different pieces and parts of the puzzle until I had a clear picture of how to fully help myself stay healthier and stronger by application of the best healing herbs that target 3 problems areas of BV.

You need this 3 STEP attack plan that no one else in the world utilizes that combats 3 different problem areas associated with bacterial vaginosis.

It is critical that you use ALL 3 STEPS to help eliminate BV for good.

I have been so incredibly healthy the past few years that I haven't even had a common cold in over 2 years, and I work in a middle school where colds are passed around like candy.

Here's what people have said about my free book:
I am writing you this email in repsonse to reading your book on bacterial vaginosis and I must say, " I hail to you!" I have recently been experience recurring BV for almost 6 months. It has been frustrating going back to my OB and taking prescribed medications.

After following your instructions, my BV was gone in a little under two weeks. It is amazing what herbal medications can do to your body. I am not a fan of taking antibiotics, because of all the toxins and chemicals, but using what you suggested is all natural and works with your body and your body's natural defenses to eliminate BV.

I am very thankful I came across your site. I am happy that you have dedicated so much time into researching what herbs and natural substances can do to help improve body function.

Thank you!! I found it most helpful and useful. I realize there were some things that I had been doing that either triggered it, or, kept it hanging on! Much appreciation.

How do i make a complete transformation with my appearance?

I want to go through a complete transformation but i dont know where to start. I got my hair cut way shorter than it was and it looks really good, but what else is there for me to do?
----------

Well, I dyed my hair, too, I recommend some highlighters. Asked a friend to come with me shopping, and she checked, that I buy kind of clothes, that I didn't wear before. Like tight jeans, instead of the baggy ones. A black shirt (yeah, a conservative shirt) is really attractive. (Made a survey among my friends, and it was the "sexiest piece of clothing") Sunglasses are cool, but please don't buy a pilot-shaped one. Even on the stars of Hollywood looks ridiculous. Colored contact lenses are very nice, but expensive. I had a black one, and it was easy to handle.  (+ info)

How harmful are cell phones to the brain and the human body?

You read about all the magnetic waves that cell phones radiate, and how it is bad for your body (especially your brain.) But what are the worst case scenarios for using a cell phone for a long period of time? Do you get cancer? Less intelligent?

Also, is it true that the lower the battery of the cell phone, the more radiation it emits?

One final question, is it harmful to keep your cell phone next to your testicles/penis (scientific terms I'm using)?

Thanks.
----------

After years of observation and argument, nobody has come up with proof that cell phones are dangerous to health, but it is reasonable to limit the exposure in children, whose brains are still developing. They really don't need to be on the phone all the time anyway.

A low battery does not increase the radiation. However, the further you are from the base station, the greater the radiation. this is because the phone senses that reception is weak, and increases its own output to ensure good contact  (+ info)

How is cancer is more potent than a cell inflicted with a virus if they have similar characteristics?

A virus is foreign RNA enters the body and actually becomes part of the cell's DNA. Cancer is caused when the DNA of a cell becomes mutated one way or another and the cell will divide and replicate uncontrollably. Both "virused" and cancerous cells are cells with mutations in the DNA. To me, virus is just RNA that causes mutation from the outside whereas cancer is mutations that come from within. Where is the real difference between these two mutations, if not in potency and ability to damage the body?
----------

Not all viruses are RNA viruses - but this is an intelligent question.
Most viruses insert a message that says "make more of me"
- - more viral particles.
The DNA damage of malignancies turns off the cellular control mechanisms that tell cells to stop dividing - so cells divide / reproduce without control as you say.
The differences is reproduction of cells vs reproduction of viral particles.

There are over 26,000 genes in the human genome.
Damage to each one has different consequences.
Nothing is simple in the human body, and it gets more complicated each year as brilliant researchers unravel the mechanisms of function associated with each gene.

There are some very smart people on this site who can explain this in much more elaborate detail if they see this question. Good question. You are thinking.
That's what I ask of my students first and foremost - think.

There are viruses associated with some human malignancies.
I think we will find more of these in the future.  (+ info)

How far should you keep your cell phone from your body when sleeping because of cell phone radiation?

When you are sleeping, how far should your cell phone be from your body? I am concerned about getting cancer so what is a good distance to keep it from my body?
----------

"Cell phone radiation" does not induce cancer. If you get a lot of phone calls while you are asleep, it might be practical to place it on the bedside table.  (+ info)
