Cerebrospinal Fluid?

Does a clear CSF automatically rule out anything Neurological, even when other Neurological signs and symptoms are visible?
----------

No. But it would be a good indicator of a lack of a disease process like meningitis. It could possibly also rule out certain metastatic diseases.  (+ info)

What function does cerebrospinal fluid serve? I have some questions about cerebrospinal fluid? ?

What function does cerebrospinal fluid serve? And what's the importance of cerebrospinal fluid in diagnosis of illness? What's the effect of excess production of cerebrospinal fluid? Anybody know? Thank you for your knowledge
----------

In old Greek time they used to think that the brain's job is to protect the fluid inside which is the CSF. No we know that the fluid helps with nurishing the brain. It can be tested to see if there is anything gowing in it. for example, if the sugar level is low in CSF, it means that some bacteria is growing and using the sugar in there. or if the protein level is higher than normal this could mean that there is a virus in there. if the pressure is high it could mean that something is blocking the flow. excess production could increase the pressure. I think on average a human body produces about 400 to 600 cc of CSF everyday.   (+ info)

What is the Cerebrospinal fluid pressure ?

What is the cerebrospinal fluid pressure (CSF) at the lumbar level of a person in the sitting position ?
----------

I'm really intrigued as to why you want to know.
It can't be very high, can it? Because it has to be drawn off, (rather than squirting out), when they do a lumbar punch. Also, in brain surgery, when the skull is opened it doesn't come pumping out.
So - sorry but I don't know. Interesting q. though.

what would happen if i ignored a possibility of cerebrospinal fluid leakage in the brain?

I asked a MD on the internet why water came out of my nose and felt like i had a nose bleed every time i bent over to pick something up or look under something, and he said it sounds like i have cerebrospinal fluid leakage in the brain.I don't have the money to see a doc. right away so I'm conserned about the issue.Could this be a life or death situation?
yes i have been in a bad car accident about 3 to 4 years ago.My left side got the worst of it.They didn't take a cat scan or an mri until after they released me and i got a really bad headach and had to go back. Then they did a cat scan and didn't see anything wronge. No the doc didn't tell me to go to the emergincy room,he just told me to see a doc. right away.My smell is just fine. The water comeing out of my nose has been going on for about a year now.My left arm tingles a lot, especialy when i try to go to sleep.I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.
----------

Yes, it could be a life and death situation.

If CSF is leaking out your nose, it means that the membranes that cover your brain have been torn. If they are torn, then bacteria can get in. If bacteria start to grow inside these membranes, that is called meningitis - and that is an infection that can kill or cripple you.

You don't mention a number of things that may be important.

How long has this been going on? If it is recent, then you should see a doctor for sure. If it has been this way your whole life, well then maybe it can wait a bit.

Did you bang your head recently? Usually such an injury is the result of a jolt to the head - or even something like a very fast jerking stop in a car. Again, if there is some incident that started all this, see a doctor immediately.

Has your sense of smell stopped working? If this is really CSF coming out your nose, then that is usually accompanied by damage to the olfactory (smell) nerves and the patients have trouble identifying familiar odors. If you are having trouble with your sense of smell, see a doctor immediately.

Obviously, it is hard to give good advice when we can't see you or know the full situation. But I would guess that the MD who gave you advice suggested that you should go to an emergency room or other critical care facility immediately, right? If they told you that, then that is what you should do.

Why would you trust advice from the anonymous lunatics on this site more than advice from someone you know is a doctor anyways?

Good luck.  (+ info)

Where would you puncture spinal cord to draw cerebrospinal fluid if brain has an infection?

Normally cerebrospinal fluid is drawn from the third or fourth vertebrae, but a patient with a brain infection would cause comlications so where would the fluid need to be extracted?
----------

I assume you are talking about a LP at the L4-5 interspace. If we need the CSF, that is still where we draw it in the ICU & the ER; there is really no other place to get it in an adult as you can't access the brain easily. So I am not sure about your question, as we tap the CSF in infections all the time to get a specimen to culture & gram stain.  (+ info)

how many drops of cerebrospinal fluid is collected during lumbar puncture?

my dad underwent a lumbar puncture, and he said the surgeon collected about eight sample of his CSF (cerebrospinal fluid), totaling some 120 drops. Is that normal?

What are the contents of a normal Cerebrospinal fluid?

Like, does it contain WBC,RBC,protein and glucose?
thanks.
----------

There should be no Red Cells (Red Cells damage neurons)

An occasional White Cell is normal, but the White Cells should not be neutrophils. Mononuclear cells (lymphocytes) are OK.

The protein should be very low; approximately 40 mg/dL.

Glucose should be about 2/3 the value of the blood sugar.
If the blood sugar is about 100 mg/dL, then the CSF will be about 66 mg/dL.

There should be no bacteria at all....ever! For obvious reasons.........  (+ info)

Is there cerebrospinal fluid present in epidural space?

I am a nursing student and saw epidural block procedure. There was a catheter inserted into the butterfly syringe. Can the syringe be a passage of CSF for a lumbar puncture? But prior to that, is there CSF circulating in the epidural space? or just in the subarachnoid space?

Why is it bad to have blood in cerebrospinal fluid?

It's was an essay question on our take home test in Anatomy/Physiology. I can't find it anywhere on our text, and having a hard time finding it online
Thanks
----------

There is something called the blood brain barrier. CSF is produced in the brain by modified ependymal cells in the choroid plexus. It circulates from the choroid plexus through the interventricular foramina (foramen of Monro) into the third ventricle, and then through the cerebral aqueduct (aqeduct of Sylvius) into the fourth ventricle, where it exits through two lateral apertures (foramina of Luschka) and one median aperture (foramen of Magendie). It then flows through the cerebromedullary cistern down the spinal cord and over the cerebral hemispheres.
There is no connection between this system and the blood stream (at least not directly),so blood in the CSF is indicative of traumatic brain injury, or intracerebral hemorrhage (especially subarachnoid hemorrhages). It can also be present from spinal injuries.  (+ info)

could this be a cerebrospinal fluid leak?

I've been sick with what would appear to be a very bad cold for the past week, Before I got sick I was hit in the head pretty hard with a basket ball, but it wasn't too hard, I just said ouch and kept walking.
Ive been coughing up a storm and have had a stuffy nose, I just realized that something coming out of my nose doesn't seem to be snot.
I have a stiff neck too.

Is cerebrospinal fluid watery or is it more like mucus?
----------

Take a tissue (or napkin) and fold it in half, and then half again. Take the corner and dab it in your nose. Unfold it. If the fluid separates and goes outward from the center making a 'ring', it is cerebral spinal fluid (csf). See you Dr or go to the ER to prevent spinal injury.  (+ info)
