Does the fluid a human body is suspended in affect its metabolism?

Suppose you have two identical people, one is in a room full of air and the other is in a pool full of water. Both the water and the air are the same temperature and neither is exerting any energy other than living, and the temperature is less than that of a human body. Also assume no temperature gradient forms and each point in the fluid is unchanging.

Do the two people require the same amount of energy to stay at human body temperature or will one burn more energy than the other?
----------

i think the two persons require the same amount of energy to stay at human body temperature.  (+ info)

What is fluid seeping for the skin of the ear?

My father occasionally get fluid from the ear, vertigo, his ear "closes up" and pain. The ENT said it is NOT an ear infection, that the fluid is actually coming from his skin. My father can even make the fluid come out by rubbing or scratching his inner ear. Antibiotics will cause it to dry up and heal, but it still comes back. Any clue what it might be?
----------

If antibiotics fix the problem, even temporarily, then it sounds like an infection. Perhaps he was misdiagnosed by the ENT.  (+ info)

What causes the fluid to exist in a blocked eustachian tube?

I have two blocked eustachian tubes. I know how to do soft tissue manipulation like the chiropractor does. I'm just curious as to why the fluid builds up in the first place. If there were no build up then it would not matter if the tube was blocked or not. Maybe?
----------

Eustachian tubes contain fluid much like your sinuses contain fluid. the fluid is to lubricate and clean, and normally do not create problems when they are healthy. Most eustachian tubes of children are perpendicular to the ear, which is why they have more of a tendency to be plugged...i.e. ear infections. The fluid has a harder time draining, so creates pressure on the eardrum, manifested in a painful ear. As we grow, eustachian tubes run diagonally down from the ear, so they drain easier. Some peoples' tubes run more like a child's' so they have more tendency to become infected.

Allergies can cause build of fluid, as your body tries to remove the allergens with the fluid. Sometimes there is buildup after a cold or virus. As the buildup remains and doesnt drain you get infections.

Like your nose, and sinuses, infection causes more fluid to build and tissues swell. As your body fights the infection, the fluid is used to carry white blood cells and antibodies to the 'scene' and fights the infection.

Most tubes can also be unblocked with cortisone , both shots and pills such as predisone. The tissues shrink with the steriod, and as the tissues shrink the fluid then drains properly and the tubes open.

How can you know if your amniotic fluid has become infected?

I've been having lots of discharge for 1 1/2 months already. I've been to the hospital 3 times for it and they just check with a amniotic strip to check if it changes color.

I cannot be sure if it really is fluid though.. As it can also be normal discharge..
My baby moves well and all. How can you know or how does a doctor determine whether you have amniotic fluid infection?
----------

When I was checked to see if my amniotic fluid was infected, they did a vaginal ultrasound while sticking a needle into my stomach to pull out some of the fluid while I was at arnold palmer hospital. I believe they sent it to the hospital lab for testing..was kinda of a blur at that point. I had mine done because I was 22 weeks pregnant and my cervix had began to dilate.. the 'sac' holding the baby was sagging through my cervix. I did not have a fever, besides some spotting I felt great. Mine was done back in 2000 and didn't had to have it checked in 2 pregnancy's I had later, so they may do it a different way now.  (+ info)

How do you alleviate the pressure and fluid build-up from an ear infection?

I have an ear infection, and the fluid is so built up in my ear that I can'treally hear out of it, and it hurts like hell. I'm taking an antibiotic, but is there any way I can drain some of that fluid?
----------

you can try decongestants like sudafed. There is no magic cure for the buildup, it will release on its own, but decongestants help occasionally, as well as intranasal steroids. Visit an ENT doctor for these Rx. and other advice.  (+ info)

How long will fluid in the middle ear take to go away?

I've had fluid behind my ear drum for about 6 days now and it is still there. It is really bothering me and I wish it would go away soon. I went to the doctor 3 days ago who confirmed fluid behind my ear drum. I am prescribed nose spray and Doxycycline which I am taking as prescribed. How long will this fluid take to clear up?
Just wanted to add that the doctor I saw was an ENT. He is the who prescribed the nose spray and Doxycycline.
----------

Hopefully it will clear up soon but if it doesn't then see an ENT doc to get this checked out. Sometimes in rare cases nothing helps the fluid go away and you can wind up with hearing loss. This is what happened to me years ago despite every drug in the book and tubes in my ears twice. Good Luck.  (+ info)

How do you eliminate fluid in the middle ear?

I have been dizzy for weeks now and the doctor saw fluid in my middle ear. She didn't give me anything for it and I'm wondering if anybody has home remedies or knows of any way to make this go away?
----------

This has nothing to do with earwax.. Only who has suffered middle ear fluid knows how annoying is. I guess the doc gave you an antihistaminic, anti inflammatory and antibiotics... Well that's it, you must wait until the tiny canal that connects the middle ear with your throat opens again and drains the liquid. For the time being don't travel by plane and don't go to lower places like the coast or so. Don't take much sunlight and don't smoke or eat irritating food. Chewing gum helps A LOT, so get use to it. One more advice, when you feel that the ear is almost ok, breathe in, close your mouth and nose with your hand and apply a slight pressure in like loading fresh air into the middle ear (you will feel the air getting in) then, breathe out, close mouth and nose again and try like breathing in, that makes a soft vacuum that helps cleaning the canal. I remember I got middle ear fluid and couldn't hear well for about 3 weeks...  (+ info)

What is building up of fluid in the front side of the eye mean?

My doctor has advised me to have a laser treatment in the eye to open the part where the fluid is bulding up. Has anyone undergone this type of treatment. Let me know your experience and any tips.
----------

There are a number of treatments for glaucoma. Glaucoma is a condition where the nerve at the back of the eye, the optic nerve...becomes damaged somehow related to pressure. This damage eventually goes back to the retinal ganglion cells which die....don't see no more....

In order for the eyeball to stay "firm", it produces aqueous. This is produced by the ciliary epithelium by passive (sort of a filter) and active (requires energy and gland like production of fluid) means.

If the eye puts....let's say 5 drops of fluid into the eye a day, it'll drain 5 drops a day. If the drain gets a little stopped up for whatever reason...blood cells clogging it up=hemorrhagic glaucoma, white cells clogging it up=leukemic glaucoma or lymphoma, pigment cells clogging it up=pigmentary glaucoma, exfoliation of the lens capsule=exfoliation glaucoma
....whatever the reason...
and the drain is clogged, it drains slower...the guys making the fluid don't know. They keep on cranking out that 5 drops a day. The pressure goes up till the fluid is forced out at 5 drops a day. If that pressure is too high for the nerve...and the nerve fibers become damaged and the ganglion cells are damaged and vision is lost...that's glaucoma.

The treatment is to either increase the drainage rate OR decrease the production rate. That's IT.

So we give people drops to do one of those or a combination of those two things...increase the drain or slow the production of aqueous.

The laser treatments vary. The old trabeculoplasty was done around the drain every few degrees so that little scars were formed. These scars pulled on the meshwork between them, pulling open the meshwork in that area. Works for awhile, but it closes up again sooner or later. There are also laser Rx that puts little holes in the trabecular meshwork...hurts a bit, doesn't work all that well, but a good idea.

The newest, latest, most coolest glaucoma surgery is done where a small canula is inserted into Schlemm's canal and a large portion of the meshwork is opened into the anterior chamber. This just works nicely with a large percentage of eyes not requiring any medication and pressures maintained in the low teens.

Just as a precaution,...there are glaucoma specialists. If it were my eye, I'd see a glaucoma specialist not only for a second opinion, but possibly for the treatment itself. It's not that most general ophthalmologists don't know how to do this, they do. Some just love glaucoma. Some aren't all that fond of it. But the glaucoma guy...that's sort of all he does. Smart decision to travel. Don't not bother. Glaucoma treatments can become nightmare not only for you, for the doc as well.

Have you ever seen how an advanced glaucoma person walks? shuffle, shuffle, shuffle.

See the glaucoma guy.  (+ info)

How do you tell the difference between leaking fluid and urine in pregnancy?

Hi everyone,

I am 37 weeks today and I am wondering how I could tell the difference between leaking urine and leaking fluid? I have fluid or what ever on my underwear and on the sheet when I wake up.

My baby feels lower and bigger to the point I have a hard time walking or even standing.
I actually have the feeling it could be D-day any day now.

Any thoughts. Thanks to everyone who reads this.
And happy holidays and happy delivery to you all! :)
----------

Amniotic fluid is usually clear and odorless, urine is not. Also if you are saturating a maxi pad with fluid it is probably not urine. Best bet is to call your doctor. They can test to see if you are leaking amnniotic fluid or not. Good luck.  (+ info)

How would you start a BBQ fire without fluid?

Lighter fluid is so unhealthy because it is chemical,
But you just cant seem to get it started quick enough without using fluid. I don't like newspaper cause it spreads all over after you light it, wood simply takes forever.

Is there anything non toxic & non chemical to get your fire started quickly without the wait of roaring flames?
----------

i cheat. i have a gas grill that i keep full just to light my charcoal. i arrange the charcoal on a grate and place it over the gas burner until it's lit. i then use a hot pad to transfer the whole mas to the charcoal grill.  (+ info)
