Do you have a child born with birth defects or other disorders?

I know the percentages are low, but I am just curious how many people on here have children with some type of physical or mental challenge and if there is anything that happened or drug they took during their pregnancy that they attribute it to?

I know 90% of the time it is a chromosomal abnormality and could not have been prevented.

Just curious.

Thanks.

Can a child have sensory integration dysfunction without having autism or other disorders?

My daughter's school psychologist wants to have my daughter labeled as autistic (high functioning). She already has been diagnosed with ADHD by a psychologist that I hired and sensory integration dysfunction (mostly auditory) by the school occupational therapist.
----------

I would try going to a Dr. like the previous poster advised. I think that you can have the SI dysfunction w/o autism. Is she social? Can she read social cues? These are things you may need to investigate.

One other thing. We tried AIT (Berard Method) and found that it really helped our children.

Good luck!  (+ info)

Has anyone taken their child to a nutrition clinic? If so, what can I expect?

My two year old will not eat - hasn't gained any weight in months. His pediatrician has referred us to the follow up Nutrition Clinic (failure to thrive clinic) at the local children's hospital. Anyone else had to do this? Wondering what to expect and what information I should take with me.
----------

You will essentially be getting questioned on his eating pattern, and the kinds of foods that you feed him and how much he DRINKS. What you need to have ready is a food log .

The time of day and what it was he ate and how much. Include drinks, even water in this log, measured in ounces or ml.

Also, be ready to answer questions about his stooling pattern, soft, hard, any foods cause excessive loose stools.

They may do blood work to see if there is something like celiac disease or a growth hormone deficiency, so be prepared to get lab work done.

Stool studies might be required. be prepared.

If you have your food log, and the longer the log, the better it is for you. Send the log in a week in advance so they have a chance to look through it and they dont waste your clinic time looking it over.

That is my advice  (+ info)

what is the best way to describe child nutrition for children ( four to twelve year olds)?

The FDA website contains loads of information for teaching nutrition to children. It's broken down by age and grade, comes with lots of stuff for them to do and color, posters, and even lesson plans and meal planners. Dole site also has good stuff for kids, and a place called 5 A Day- do a web search on that and you'll find it.  (+ info)

Does spanking cause a child to develope mental disorders ?

Some yes. Some less so. Regardless, it is never a good thing to "teach" a child by reacting to their behavior with violence. Spanking is a way for parents to relieve their own stress not actually teach their children anything except if you are bigger you can hit people.  (+ info)

older mothers cause learning disorders in child?

So I have a friend who had some speech problems as a child, extreme shyness, and learning problems. He went to speech therapy worked with teachers and everything and isn't really having issues with it now. But when his mother had him she was at least 35 if not older. Could that have anything to do with it?
----------

it could it is a possibility, my mom had me when she was 40 and i turned out find, i think jk im an honor roll student with a g.p.a of 3.6 im in the tenth grade. i think it depends on the person and their genes.  (+ info)
