How many calories and grams of fat should a child intake per day?

I'm doing my senior project on children's nutrition and for my product I am proposing a week long sample diet. I have researched and gotten different answers for the number of calories and grams of fat a child should have per day. Can anyone help me out with this?

if you are a child you should have no more than 40 grams. if you are a adult you should have no more than 65.  (+ info)

Were you afraid of your first child having a disorder?

First time moms: were you afraid of your first child having genetic/chromosonal disorders or birth defects related to what you took in during your pregnancy?

For instance: I've been eating these gummies with 25% Vitamin A and I'm afraid I may have had too many!

Did anyone else have these fears?

Sure, I was a very healthy kid and our family had no diseases in the immediate family.

But my husbands family had cancer, asthma, kidney disease. All kinds of things. I never thought about it until I was pregnant and going to the doctor. He brought up the idea to ask and unfortunately I got the answers.

I tried to make sure I exercised right and ate the best foods for the best nurtition I could give my baby.

But I just prayed to God that she came out alright.

The first time they brought her to me, after I cuddled her awhile, I held my breath unwrapping her blanket. I had to make sure she had all her toes and fingers and everything was where it was suppose to be.

She was healthy. And I was happy.  (+ info)

What type of preschool is your child in?

My son (almost 4) is in a preschool that is "non-academic" meaning they check twice a year to see if they are meeting developmental milestones but do not actively teach skills such as numbers and letters. They do circle and story time and have themed units such as health and safety and nutrition, but do not work on anything to prepare for Kindergarten. SO...what type of preschool is YOUR child in?
Just an FYI I have taught him all of his preschool skills already anyway, he even prints his name clearly. I just wondered if I should put him in a more academic preschool next fall since it's his last year before Kindergarten. Just curious as to what others are doing :)

The state I live in we have what they call Pre-K, and I can honestly say that, that's exactly what they do.....I have 2 children who attended and man am I impressed. I was a product of pre-k too. Headstart I don't agree with. Their focus is on teaching caring and sharing.....to me that's my job as a parent, I would want for them to focus on abc and 123!  (+ info)

What do they do for children with eating disorders?

My child has always had a problem eating, but they don't seem to recognise it as a problem when they are two or three. We have taken her to children's hospital and they have not done anything for her they even seem to think she doesn't have a problem, but they never see how little she really eats and she drinks pediasure which was persrcibed to her, but it makes her sick. I'm getting really worried about it and my local hospital does not seem to do anything about it. Does anyone know what I can do for her?

Are we talking about a small child? Like elementary school? If not, I think seeing a psychologist would be a wise first step. If so....well, if this is a young child it doesn't sound like its an eating disorder in the formal sense. Usually, thats intentional and has to do with distorted body image. Small children can be obstinant about food as a way of exhibiting control (getting their way) or because of pickiness but usually when the child gets hungry enough, he/she eats. For the most part, if the child is maintaining their weight and in their expected growth curve, many docs will just wait to see if it works itself out.

That having been said, it does sound like theres something going on. Have you asked for a referral to a specialist-maybe a nutritionist or a gastroenterologist? Have they done swallowing studies to make sure she doesn't have a structural problem or perhaps something like reflux? There are some conditions that can cause kids to not want to eat or to get sick-things like Meckel's diverticulum or more obscure things like metabolic disorders. I think a referral to a GI doc would be a reasonable thing. If they say everything is good, you could always ask for a referral to a child psychologist or a behavioral therapist to see if this is in part behavioral and whether this is something they can recommend to correct the behavior or ameliorate the situation. Hope that helps.  (+ info)

Do y'all believe that breastfeeding really makes a child more intelligent?

I have read the statistics many times. I really don't want to believe they're true. I have a birth defect in which I could not breastfeed my babies. I sometimes feel bad about it even though there was nothing I could do to help it. I think a lot of factors go into a child's intelligence. Besides breastfeeding as an infant, what about:
Nutrition after the child is weaned
Levels of Activity
Parental love, attention, and stimulation
Amounts of sleep
Other factors

What are y'all's opinions?
----------

My best friend is a Mensa member (she's a genius) and she was never breastfed. Recent studies have shown that the early claims of higher IQ may not be that true. I wouldn't worry. :)  (+ info)
