Chlamydia infections..?

Describe how chlamydial infections can lead to ectopic pregnacies and blindness?
----------

Chlamydia is a curable sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis. It is a leading cause of sexually transmitted disease in industrial societies, and of preventable infectious blindness (ocular trachoma) in the developing world. It is also one of the main causes of infertility in humans.

Chlamydia can be spread during oral, vaginal or anal sexual contact with an infected partner. In addition, chlamydial infection may affect a newborn baby. A baby who is exposed to C. trachomatis in the birth canal during delivery may develop an eye infection or pneumonia. Symptoms of conjunctivitis (or “pink eye”) usually develop within the first 10 days of life and include discharge and swollen eyelids. Symptoms of pneumonia, such as congestion and a cough that gets steadily worse, most often develop within three to six weeks of birth. Because of these risks to the newborn, many doctors recommend that all pregnant women be tested for chlamydial infection.

Because genital chlamydial infections are asymptomatic in 75 percent of women and 50 percent of men, affected individuals often do not seek appropriate medical care. Left untreated, chlamydia can cause urethral infection and epididymitis in males. In addition, 40 percent of women with untreated chlamydia will develop pelvic inflammatory disease, and 20 percent of these women will become infertile. Pelvic inflammatory disease can also cause scarring of the fallopian tubes, which increases the likelihood of an ectopic pregnancy, a potentially fatal condition in which a fertilized egg develops in the body somewhere other than in the uterus. If chlamydia infection occurs during pregnancy, it can cause adverse outcomes such as premature labor and delivery, as well as conjunctivitis and pneumonia in newborns (see above). Moreover, women infected with chlamydia have a three- to five-fold increased risk of acquiring HIV, if exposed.  (+ info)

What's the best treatment for rectal chlamydia infections?

Doxicycline and azitromicine did not work.
----------

Take all your medication. Your physician may give you antibiotics--either a single dose of azithromycin (Zithromax) or a seven-day course of doxycycline (Vibramycin). Take doxycycline right after meals. This antibiotic can irritate your stomach, says Dr. Brown, so take it on a full stomach with a large glass of water.

It takes a few days for your body to absorb either drug. Antibiotics get your recovery rolling, but they don't knock out infection right away, "The medicine itself doesn't usually eradicate the infection. What it does is kill off enough of the bugs or slow them down enough so that your immune response can then do the rest of the work."

Protect yourself in the sun. "Doxycycline is a tetracycline drug that can increase sensitivity to the sun," When you're heading outdoors, protect your skin with sunscreen with maximum sun protection factor (SPF), she advises. Shoot for an SPF of 15 or higher. Wear a hat and stay out of direct sunlight

Skip sex until a week after treatment. "We usually encourage people to wait until they are free of symptoms and they and their sex partners have completed medication before they have intercourse," .If your partner starts treatment after you do, wait until after he completes treatment to be reasonably sure that he is no longer infected, either.

Absolutely don't douche. "There's no reason to douche at all, ever,". Not only does douching have no effect on relieving or preventing chlamydia, but, "it can also have the detrimental effect of pushing the infection up further into your urogenital tract," where it can do damage to your reproductive system.

Practice monogamy. Short of swearing off sex, cultivating a mutually monogamous lifetime relationship offers good protection against chlamydia and other STDs, because you and your partner will not be bringing infections from others into your bedroom.  (+ info)

Tetracycline is no longer the drug of choice for chlamydia, in fact it is generally pretty obsolete. Your prescribing physician will of course advise on the correct dose of the appropriate antibiotic for you and your partner(s).  (+ info)

Can you get HPV from getting into a hot tub? I know Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and any internal infections are exemp

I know Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and any internal infections are exempt, but what about external ailments, like Herpes and HPV?
----------

Herpes is spread by direct skin to skin contact and by sex (genital herpes). You can get herpes simplex one (cold sores) simply by being kissed by someone who has them on their lips or mouth area. Genital herpes (herpes simplex 2) can be spread by having direct skin contact (like rubbing) or by having sex with a person who has it. Even if the person is not showing an sores, they can still be "shedding" the virus, which can cause you to get it.

HPV is spread the same way. Direct skin to skin contact and sex. If a person has genital warts, hand or feet warts (all caused by HPV), you can get them by just rubbing or touching them. You can also get HPV from sex. It is the number one STD in the world, because there really are no signs or symptoms from it.

As for getting it in the hot tub, I really doubt it. I have both viruses and I have NEVER gave it to anyone that I shared a hot tub with (family, friends, boyfriends, etc.) I think the only possible way you would get it is if you were rubbing, direct skin to skin contact, with someone who has the virus in the hot tube. Its not like the virus is "floating around" in the hot tub though.  (+ info)

why is diagnosing and treating chlamydia infections difficult in women?

Chlamydia and gonorrhea have the same symptoms and can occur and infect someone at the same time. Cultures from a woman's genitals must be cultured and tested in a lab using an expensive and time consuming text.  (+ info)

Can Amoxicillin used by itself cure chlamydia infections in men?

It's not typically used anymore. The bacteria as become resistant to it. They use a stronger antibiotic now.  (+ info)

can chlamydia cause kidney infections?

I am not sure if i have Chlamydia yet, but lately the area where my kidneys are have been hurting. I had unprotected sex three months ago.
i am 17 and dont exactly have the money to get tested, however i finally will be tested in a few days.

but i am very worried that if i do have chlamydia or gonherra that i could have a kidney infection or something???
would three months be enough to do that?
----------

If you have an STD like chlamydia, gonorrhea, etc, you could have cramps in your lower abdomen area b/c its infected if you are not sure you have it I would advise you to go get checked out by the doctor just to be safe b/c it could turn into cervical cancer and endanger your health. As far as affecting your kidneys it could. Try a free health department in your area they usually will help for free. Or go to the hospital and tell them about it and just say you would liked to be billed and they have no choice but to treat you. Good luck  (+ info)

Can a doctor visually see stds like Gonorrea or Chlamydia?

I am a BAD hypochondriac so i get tested for std's alot even though i only have one sexual partner. I constantly get BV so i freak out every time and get a swab done for stds.
I went today because of BV(the results came back) and at the appointment my doctor said it did not look like anything like Gonorrea or Chlamydia when she looked.

Is it possible to visually see these infections?

They can tell when something is wrong like how your discharge looks, smells, and they will look to see if your cervix is inflamed and red (cause it usually will be when infected with an STD).  (+ info)
