Yes, it can. Let me explain. Cholestasis is the slowing of the
bile that goes to the intestines. Liver disease entails a process of
the cells being damaged, inflammation developing because of the
immune system responding to the damage, to death of the liver cells
and scar forming in the liver that blocks the flow of blood through the liver.
The liver goes from normal size, to being enlarged when inflammation
develops, to shrinking in size when the cells die off and become hard
textured. The common structure of the whole liver changes.

The liver cells are what does the functions of the liver.
If the liver cells die off, the function of making bile deteriorates.
There are bile ducts inside the liver itself, before they go to the two
main ones that leave the liver. They can become damaged in the
process of this. You may want to look up Biliary Cirrhosis.

The bile ducts can be obstructed, malformed (twisted or strictured
in nature) or infection can occur.

Hi i had some bloods taken on thursday because of very painful right sided rib pain.liver bile test came back higher than normal and now they think i have Obstetric Cholestasis.read so much about it,just wondered if it dissapears or weather you most definately will be induced at 37 weeeks? currently 34 weeks.had first baby at 36 weeks due to pre-eclampsia,are they connected at all?. appointment at hospital tomorrow.
Cholestasis means that your gallbladders isn't functioning very well. In pregnancy, this is most likely caused by the baby pushing up on your internal organs. This can compress the gallbladder, and then it doesn't drain properly. Sometimes, simply getting the baby delivered will fix the problem.

Pre-eclampsia and cholestasis are not really related. However, they can have similar symptoms. I'm sure your doctor is keeping track of your liver function tests, your blood pressure and other symptoms of pre-eclampsia.  (+ info)

waiting for results for the cholestasis test. Did you have it if so will they take the baby early? any ways to relieve the itching in the middle of the night? im just interested to know your stories.
I do not have this disorder, but I may be able to help. The disorder can cause you to have a premature birth. 44% of woman with this disorder do. There is also chances of hemorrhaging, and even still birth. Continue to go to your doctor regularly. If he/she has not suggested any treatments, you may want to ask them about Ursodeoxycholic Acid (Actigall), Vitamin K, and Steriods. There is great chance of defeating this disorder. If you do not succeed, do not give up on trying to have children. Keep trying. Almost every woman has at least one "bad birth". My mom had two miscarriages and she now has three children. The doctor may suggest early delivery.

The following ways should help with the itching:

• Calamine lotion
• Creams containing chamomile or calendula
• Wearing light, loose cotton clothes
• Avoiding hot, humid conditions.

I am 25 weeks and may have ICP. I also have elevated blood pressure and +2 proteins in my urine. Anyone have those and deliver at term? How did your baby do? Also... did anyone have preeclampsia diagnosed this early in pregnancy and NOT have problems? If you did have problems what were they?? Thanks in advance for all the answers!

I am 31 weeks and I have recently been tested for cholestasis. I am waiting the results but the dr is sure that I have it with all my symptoms. Has anyone else had this? and what was the outcome? I have read about the higher chance of having a stillborn and then having to beinduced early and then the risk of hemmoraging. I am just looking for experiences. I am going to the dr tmw but I would like to know if anyone else went through this and what happened. I am extremely worried as this is my first pregnancy and had no clue this could happen. I had cholestatis of pregnancy as well, although I was already 34 weeks along when I was diagnosed. The telltale sign was the fact that I was itching all over my body (like a dog with fleas!) My son delivered healthy 2 weeks later (only jaundice), but not before I went through hell trying to get effective treatment. Hopefully your Dr. will be more informed about the condition and how to treat it. Unfortunately, the itching will only get worse before you deliver. My dr put me on bed rest and stopped my contractions despite the fact that i was in my 36th week. He refused to do an amnio to test the baby's lungs because the NST was showing healthy at the time. Once I harassed the Dr's enough, they agreed to not stop my contractions anymore, IF they came back, but they did not plan to induce me until 38 weeks!! The risk was too great for me to wait that long, so I cleaned and walked and did everything i could to get my labor going. My last pregnancy was horrible! I developed cholestasis and was hospitalized for a week, and was wondering if anyone else has had this condition and if they ever had it re occur in another pregnancy. My husband and I would like 1 more, but I don't ever want the condition again, as it was annoying and bothersome. Did you ever have it? What was your experience?
What are the chances of the mother getting Cholestasis in another pregnancy?

Whether or not a woman will get cholestasis in future pregnancies is debatable. However, some sources claim that women who have had cholestasis of pregnancy have up to a 90% chance of having this repeat in future pregnancies.

Ok, so Im 37 weeks pregnant now and I woke up last night with this HORRIBLE itch, mostly on my feet and palms of my hands. Now it is an allover itch. I went to the doctor and he told me it might be Cholestasis of Pregnancy.
I know this increases my chance of having a stillborn and I am terrified. I go for bloodwork tomorrow night to test for it.
Im wondering, has anyone had this condition while pregnant and had a healthy baby?

I don't know about Cholestasis, but you're 37 weeks, thats considered full term. Why doesn't your doctor just induce you, or via csection to get the baby out before any harm could be done?  (+ info)

How many of you that were induced ended up having an emergency c-section?

i'm 35 weeks and being induced on the 6th October due to having obstetric cholestasis. Very curious as to how many people ended up have a c-section because inducing didn't work?

5 natural labours, 5 natural births

2 inductions, 1 natural birth, 1 emergency c-section.

Having an emergency section doesn't necessarily mean the induction didn't work. The induction may well have been very successful but the reason for the section can be relatively unrelated.  (+ info)

I asked a question about this last night.
Just incase I have tried to book me in to see my GP but they dont have any free appointments until Wednesday, which is when I am due to see my midwife anyway.

If it were obstetric cholestasis, am I okay to wait until Wednesday to at least get a blood test or something for it????

HI, how far along are you? I am currently almost 36 weeks, and they are ready to do an amnio and induce if possible. I have read that risks for more damage increase after 38 weeks. Are you certain that you have OC? If you feel like you should be seen earlier, take yourself to the hospital, explain your symptoms, and DEMAND a bile test of your blood. You are the only person who can speak up for your baby's health right now, so You should. Do not worry about sounding like a witch. You need to follow your gut! Good luck!  (+ info)

If you have not heard of or had ICP then you will most likely not understand the purpose of delivering early.. This is a condition in which your liver shuts down and dumps your bile salt into your blood stream. It makes you itch very very badly and the chances of the baby being stillborn sky rocket at 36 weeks. If you have ICP most people say you need to deliver at or before 37 weeks. (FYI)

I itched EVERYWHERE!!!
hi I am on baby 4 but my third with ICP. Are you having regular bile salt tests? Have you looked at the chat site for ICP sufferers http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/itchymoms/messages
it is great, others share there experience with you and they can give you some great medical info. I can't help you with you question about the steroids because more info is needed such as, Is your Dr helpful with ICP(most aren't)? Are they considering induction before 36 weeks(they should be if not)? I think with your history of delivering so early with your firstBABY talking to your Dr about steroids are definitely an option.
