Can your knee lock with chondromalacia?

My right knee locked in december twice in one week. I had an MRI and was told that I have chondromalacia but that was it. I am currently taking physical therapy for my right knee for a month but my other knee is starting to hurt a lot.
----------

Locking is mechanical as when a torn meniscus or loose body gets stuck in between the bones that make up your joint. Softening of the cartilage(Chondomalacia Patellae) will not cause locking.  (+ info)

What kind of treatment for chondromalacia patella?

"Runner's knee" often affects young and otherwise healthy athletes. One of the most important treatments is to avoid the activity that caused the problem. Use of RICE - rest, ice, compression, elevation - should help , as well as exercise such as cycling or swimming, straight leg raises, achilles tendon stretches.

I am sure you have consulted your doc about this problem, but the websites I've attached give lots of more specific information. Good luck with getting this sorted.  (+ info)

What is the best way of loosening hamstrings?

At work the other day, I did a lot of walking, picking up and carrying loads. My job normally is a sitting down job with about 10% of the time with the loads.

Now the back of my knees are really tight and painful. I find it difficult to bend them as well.

I had chondromalacia patellae 10 years ago (where the cartlidge around the kneecap softens) and some arthritus (diagnosed in 2007) in the same knee.
----------

Jumpy, I am not sure that it is your hamstrings that are bothering you. When they hurt it is usually much higher in the back of the thigh. What I think is bothering you is your calf muscles. To work this area do these movements. From a long sitting position or lying on your back have the knees out straight and have the muscles of the feet pull the front of the feet up towards the shins. The only movement that occurs is at the ankles. You will be able to know that this is working correctly as there will be a pulling in the back of the calves. Hold that pull for about 10 seconds and then relax. Repeat this between 5 and 10 times. Do this about twice a day. Best time to do it is right before bed and just after waking up. As for the hamstrings, lie on your back with one leg bent at the hips and knees. Have the other leg come up straight. Keep the knee straight and move the leg from the hip. You will soon find that there is a stretching in the back of the thigh. Hold that stretch for about 10 seconds and do that 3 times per leg. This should also be done twice a day. Hope that helps!  (+ info)

Clearing up Runners Knee (Chondromalacia) without losing fitness?

I've read a few bits and pieces on Runners Knee as I feel I'm showing the symptoms, and before it gets worse, I've read that you need to strengthen the muscles around the patella.

I cannot swim, but I cycle and dance. Are there any other activities that I can do to strengthen the muscles while the cartilage heals?

Your kneecap is wearing out. But you are on the right track with strengthing your muscles. That will help. But if your kneecap wears out enough you're looking at surgery, probably a scope.  (+ info)

what is the best way to get pain away from chondromalacia?

Chondromalacia patella is the most common cause of chronic knee pain. Chondromalacia patella results from poor alignment of the kneecap (patella) as it slides over the lower end of the thigh bone (femur). Chondromalacia patella is also informally called "housemaid's knee" or "secretary's knee."

The best treatment for chondromalacia is low-impact exercise that strengthen muscles (particularly the inner part of the quadriceps ) and decreasing any jumping or impact. Swimming, stationary bicycle, and cross-country skiing are good ways to strengthen the joint without impact. It's helpful to avoid any activity that requires the knee to flex more than 90 degrees.

Finally, arthroscopic surgery may be used to smooth the surface of the articular cartilage and clean out cartilage fragments that cause the joint to catch during bending and straightening. This determination can only be made by a proper evaluation and diagnosis, so always see your doctor for knee pain that lasts more than two weeks.  (+ info)

Is Arthrits the same thing as chondromalacia medial femoral and tibial condyle Intercondylar osteophyte?

arthritis is the inflammation of the joints. chondromalacia medial femoral is the lesion in the cartilage of the medial or the inner side of the knee. it may be caused by injury or may be congenital or may even be caused by osteophytes. osteophytes are reaction bone formation caused by wear and teat of cartilages. they may break out of the bone and cause the formation of loose bodies otherwise known as the mice in the knee joint. these are the precursors of osteoarthritis of knee.
the things mentioned by you are different but are all interrelated as most cases arthritis have the some sort of osteophyte formation. hope that answers the question.  (+ info)

does anyone have any tips for treatment of chondromalacia on the inner part of the knee? Im a 14 yr old boy?

Chondromalacia patella usually improves with therapy and use of NSAIDs. For the few people who need it, surgery is successful most of the time.

Temporarily resting the knee and taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin may help relieve pain. Physical therapy, especially quadriceps strengthening and hamstring stretching, may be helpful.

Limit participation in sports or strenuous activity until the pain has gone away. Avoid activities that increase the knee pain, such as deep knee bends, until the pain improves.

If the alignment of the patella cannot be corrected with therapy, surgery may be an option. Depending on the type of misalignment, the surgery may be arthroscopic (using a camera, which allows a smaller incision) or open.  (+ info)

I am into boxing. I have chondromalacia patella. What exercise should I avoid to stop the pain?

The treatment of chondromalacia remains controversial, but most individuals can undergo effective treatment by resting the knee and adhering to a proper physical therapy program. Allowing the inflammation of chondromalacia to settle is the first step of treatment. Avoiding painful activities that irritate the knee for several weeks, followed by a gradual return to activity is important. In this time, cross-training activities, such as swimming, can allow an athlete to maintain their fitness while resting the knee. The next step in treatment is a physical therapy program that should emphasize strengthening and flexibility of the quadriceps and hamstring muscle groups. Use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication is also helpful to minimize the pain associated with chondromalacia. Treatment with surgery is declining in popularity for two reasons: good outcomes without surgery, and the small number of patients who actually benefit from surgical treatment.  (+ info)

Managing Chondromalacia Patella?

I suffer from chondromalacia patella in my left knee, it's been like this for quite a while, I wonder if anyone else suffers from this and what they do do manage the condition/pain?

I have anti inflamatories that i take when it flares up and i can't straighten my knee out, and have previously taken glucosomine and chondrotin to help manage it.

Is anyone able to say what they do to help, what they take, how they manage their condition?

Thanks in advance!

First off let me say welcome to the club sorry that you had to join. I have been dealing with this condition in both my knees for over 24 years. I swear I see my Orthopedic Surgeon more than my family doctor. My case is really severe at this point, I have had 6 surgeries on my right knee and 1 so far on the left to help with the pain, I am still in pain pretty much all the time now. But what did help me when I started this lovely rollercoster was lots of heat, Ice made my knees hurt worse but heat what the biggest help. I also got braces for my knees that where designed for the condition and would wear those on the days that the pain was really bad or if I knew that I was going to be on my feet a lot walking. Also avoid activities that irritate it like running. If you look on google you will find lots of exercises that are designed to help develop the supporting knee muscles that will help with some of the pain in mild to moderate cases. You might also try the Synivic injections they helped my mom to the point that for about 6 months she was completely pain free, my case is so bad that they did nothing for me unfortunately. That is about all the advice that I can offer hope that you get to feeling better soon and that your case does not get as bad as mine did I was diagnosed when i was 13 and I am 37 now and my knees rule my life for the most part.  (+ info)

what are the treatments for PATELLA (CHONDROMALACIA) that does not involve surgery?

You can try physical therapy which will help strengthen the muscles in your hips and thighs therefore taking some of the stress off of your knee. You will have to continue indefinitely with the strengthening exercises to maintain the strength. It wont all out cure you but can make things more manageable. Surgery really is no sure bet to help either. Cartilage does not repair itself. There are various supplements that claim to rebuild cartilage but none have been proven to work.  (+ info)
