Chondromalacia Patellae?

I just was dianosged with Chondromalacia Patellae in both knees. So my question is, what are some good treatments to ease the pain. Im already taking an nsaid, I ice both knees and apply heat. What else could I do to ease the pain? What do you do? Where could I find knee braces for Chondromalacia Patellae?
----------

WOW I had that about 20 years ago. The doctors a minor procedure on it and it helped. I work in ortho and I can tell you it self treating is tough. A ace bandage (not to tight) helps. The best thing is to consult with a ortho doc.  (+ info)

Chondromalacia patellae?

I'm a 13 year old female.
Went to see my GP last Wednesday because of a recurring pain in my left knee for over 4 years now.
He diagnosed me with Chondromalacia patellae.
I don't think that's right... Has anyone had it?
The gel he's given me hasn't worked, and I'm only allowed to use it for a week as any longer could cause problems. (I don't know why.)
----------

not sure what the gel is but the diagnosis can be right. it is wear of the cartilage behind the knee cap.

What is the treatment for chondromalacia?

Avoid strenuous use of the knee - until the pain eases. Symptoms usually improve in time if the knee is not over used.
Painkillers - paracetamol or anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen may be advised to ease the pain.
Physiotherapy - improving the strength of the muscles around the knee will ease the stress on the knee. Also, specific exercises may help correct problems with alignment and muscle balance around the knee. For example, you may be taught to do exercises which strengthen the inner side of the quadriceps muscle.
Taping of the patella - is a possible treatment which can reduce pain. This is where adhesive tape is applied over the patella, to alter the alignment or the way the patella moves. Some people find this helpful. Some physiotherapists can offer patellar taping treatment.  (+ info)

I have been diagnosed with Chondromalacia patellae, both knees, suffered with it since i was 16, now 24yrs old

Would I be classed as disabled? I had a lateral release operation on 21st June which didnt work and now may need transfer of the tibial tubercle. I have to attend physiotherapy every week which isnt helping. Please advise as my work have given me a disciplinary for my time off after my op and i feel this is disability discrimination!

many thanks
----------

I have had this condition since I was 12. I am now 32. It is not considered a disability.

A better question to ask is, why didn't your doctor perform an arthroscopic surgery? I have had these every 2 to 3 years, sometimes 4 years and I am doing fine. I am actually going in to have another surgery on my right knee tomorrow.

Why did your doctor determine that this more extensive surgery was right for you?

One more question, was this something that had been developing since puberty or did you do extensive sports? These are the main two reasons that people get this condition and the treatments differ.  (+ info)

Where is the best treatment for chondromalacia patellae?

If the cartilage is not damaged, then a combination of stretching the muscles, exercise and massaging the knee cap before exercising can keep things under control. It would be a good idea to have a physical therapist instruct you on the specifics.

If there is already cartilage damage, then the next best procedure is to drill tiny holes in the cartilage with arthroscopic surgery.

There are other more involved surgical approaches, but its a good idea to try the simple things first..  (+ info)

will you die if you have chondromalacia patellae?

hi im a nursing student form the philippines and an avid soccer fan.. i also play the sport that's why i have this illness, what are the complications of this disease and what are the treatments except for surgery although you can tell me when is the time that i should undergo surgery... any doctors who can guide me about this will be greatly appreciated especially the orthopedics.... it's quite disturbing for me and i can't walk the way i used to..
the pain is really worrying me alot...
hope you friends can help me......
if yo can, tell me about the whole thig about chondromalacia patellae
tnx!
----------

Ice it and use anti-inflammatory drugs, like naproxem(alieve) can be help full. Has your doctor suggested stationary bicycling? You want to improve the alignment of the patella, swimming (flutter kick) can be of great help. You need to go to your doctor for the proper way to exercise. Stay away from Soccer until it heals up.  (+ info)

I have Chondromalacia Patellae?

Im a 28 year old male i have always been very fit i have been a runner most of my life until last year when i picked up a knee injury and was diagnosed with chondromalacia. I feel my activity is very limited these days.
Any information will be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the club I was diagnosed with chondromalacia when i was 16. There are exercises that you can do that will help strengthen the muscles around the knee that will help slow down the deterioration of the knee, talk toy your doctor about getting some Physical Therapy and they can give you the exercises to do. I know how you feel about being limited mine finally go so bad that I was not able to walk the dog to the corner to the mailbox. I had several scopes done on the knee to clean things up and nothing was helping. Since I am to young to get a knee replacement and it is only the underside of the kneecap that is effected I was told to deal with it and there is nothing that they can do. Finally got a new doc (went to 5 different OS docs that told me there was nothing much that they could do) the 5th doc that I saw did a scope and saw how bad it was and decided that it was time to do more. Last Friday I had a Maquet Ostomototy done it that is supposed to get rid of up to 75% of the pain.
Hopefully your condition won't get as bad as mine did. Just get into some PT and get some exercises that will help slow things down. If you want to you can email me at [email protected]  (+ info)

I am F, 31 diagnosed with grade 2 chondromalacia patellae, how many "grades" are there possible to be had?

I had an M.R.I. on my LEFT knee and the radiologist stated: Full thickness fissuring of the articular cartilage of the median ridge of the patella. The remainder of the patellar cartilage demonstrates globular intrasubstance increased signal. There is no osteochondral defect or fracture line. Bone marrow signal is unremarkable.. I also have a trace popliteal cyst.

I have had a bit a knee "experience" before... two surgeries on my RIGHT knee, one in late 1996 and another in late 1997 to fix the stuff they "missed" in 1996. Meniscus tears...back to the present...

My doctor didn't really say whether this was good news or bad news. He just gave me the # to the ortho. surgeon. and sent me on my way?
I wasn't able to walk for two days and I am using crutches.
We thought it was an ACL tear. So this is NOT what I expected to hear. Can anyone translate a bit or tell me the ballpark chances that I might have to have my kneecap replaced or how long and hard will recovery be after a "cleanout"?
----------

There are 4 grades.

I swelling of the superficial layer of hyaline cartilage with breakdown of the network of collagen fibers
II fibrillated cartilage with surface breaks that extend to the middle layer of the hyaline cartilage
III breaks in the hyaline cartilage extend to the deepest layer, almost to the depth of the subchondral bone
IV destruction of the hyaline cartilage with exposure of subchondral bone, indistinguishable from degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis)

I believe that in stage 2 it is very possible that you will not need surgery, but can go to therapy. Sometimes the build-up of damaged cartilage is too great and they will have to shave down the scarred tissue, drill to allow healthy tissue to grow through the holes, or realign to prevent further damage.

Usually, a patelectomy, partial or total (that is a knee replacement) is rare unless there is very severe damage.

Don't just let them cut you open without more than one opinion. Sometimes, orthopedic surgeons like to solve everything the surgery way. This doesn't mean that they don't have your best interests at heart, they just want to solve it that way, when there may be more than one way to fix it.

It seemed like your biggest concern and problem is Chondromalacia, if you want me to explain the other stuff, let me know. It's kind of sad how doctors can't spend the time telling their patients what is wrong in normal terms.  (+ info)

treatments for chondromalacia patellae.. anyone?

The treatment of chondromalacia remains controversial, but most individuals can undergo effective treatment by resting the knee and adhering to a proper physical therapy program. Allowing the inflammation of chondromalacia to settle is the first step of treatment. Avoiding painful activities that irritate the knee for several weeks, followed by a gradual return to activity is important. In this time, cross-training activities, such as swimming, can allow an athlete to maintain their fitness while resting the knee. The next step in treatment is a physical therapy program that should emphasize strengthening and flexibility of the quadriceps and hamstring muscle groups. Use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication is also helpful to minimize the pain associated with chondromalacia. Treatment with surgery is declining in popularity for two reasons: good outcomes without surgery, and the small number of patients who actually benefit from surgical treatment.

do i have Chondromalacia Patellae? if so what can i do to heal it fast?how long does it stay(skateboarder)btw?

after skateboarding one night my right knee started hurting.
a day or so later it felt fine to skate so i did. day after it hurt again, now 3 days later it still hurts when i bend down and stand up. i can walk fine and run fine but when it comes to skataboarding i cant do it it hurts too mucuh. also there seems to be a vivid bruise i may have hit it. it hurts when u press on it right below the kneecap.
how long will it take to heal? is it just a bruise? how to heal it?
i am icing it and putting absorbiam jr on it and it feels nicar but what to do?
----------

Sounds like you have probably just bruised it. I have Chondromalacia Patellae and find that my knee seizes up if I sit still for long periods or overnight when I'm lying in bed. You don't mention these symptoms.

However, the only person who can tell you for sure would be a specialist medical professional. If it still hurts in a few days, make a dr appt. In the meantime, I recommend Ibuprofen, either tablets or the gel that you can apply directly to the knee. Also, rest your knee - give the running/skateboarding a rest for a few days to let your knee heal.

Hope you feel better soon!  (+ info)
