"high grade sprain mcl" "high grade chondromalacia in median ridge of patella". What does this mean?

I am a 33 year old female who fell 3 weeks ago and landed on my knee. I had an MRI done last week and the results state "High-grade sprain medial collateral ligament. Marrow edema of likely contusion seen posterior lateral femoral condyle. High-grade chondromalacia is seen in the median ridge of the patella. Small joint effusion." I saw an orthopedic surgeon today and start pt Wednesday. When I asked about the chondromalacia he said it was nothing to worry about. So, I let it go. When I came home I decided to look chondromalacia up....and b/c of it being grade 4...I am now worried....Does anyone know if I should be worried?...Is this something that will require surgery?...Will it ever heal?...Will I ever resume my previous very active lifestyle? Help!!!

Chondromalacia is also commonly known as Patellar Femoral Disfunction, Patellar Femoral Syndrome, and Anterior Knee Pain. It is basically just when the back of your patella *knee cap* gets inflamed. It can be treated by streching your quads every day for 4-5 sets of 30 seconds each, Stretching your hamstrings for 4-5 sets of 30 seconds every day, Streching your Illial Tibial Band for 4-5 sets of 30 seconds every day, also getting on a quad/hamstring/itb strengthening program at the gym would be good. Make sure you DO NOT do leg extensions, there is to much force directed on your knee when you do those. Also you should find out from a peditrist to see if you pronate or not. If so he would give you arch supports and probally have you get better shoes.  (+ info)

Patella Chondromalacia, Patella Femoral Syndrome, Arthritis, and Bursitis?

I have had most of these problems since I was 11, and I am 16 now.
I had fallen and slightly dislocated my knee.
I have had 6 surgeries, but have horrible pain, although my knee cap is in place, arthritis has set in, and I have developed bursitis. My knee buckles so I fall. Right now I am on Darvocet for the pain.
I have tried Physical Therapy, Acupuncture, Tai Chi, Yoga, a pain psychologist, and many other things.
We havent really found anything that helps.
I go to a Pain Management Clinic right now.
Any suggestions or other ideas?
What is an arthroplasty
----------

Arthroplasty- any surgery done to improve the function of a joint. Nowadays this usually refers to joint replacement but replacement is reserved for elderly patients due to the unpredictable life span of the implants. Maybe your doctor is thinking of interposing something underneath your patella to make it glide smoother. This is another kind of arthroplasty. Sit down and discuss with him. Nothing to lose!  (+ info)

everything about chondromalacia?

what's the scientific cause, cure end excercises for chondromalacia?
----------

Chondromalacia Patella is often used by physicians as a catch-all term to describe anterior knee pain that results from patellar malalignment. The strict definition, however, is simply the degeneration of the cartilage on the posterior aspect of the kneecap.

For the sake of brevity, I have put sites here that you can go to where you can find information directly linked to this issue.  (+ info)

Patella Chondromalacia."?

I have severe Patella Chondromalacia, for about 5 years, and I am only 16 years old.
I have had 6 knee surgeries, I have gone to physical therapy, religiously, I have been on tons of medicines, I have tried pain management, natural rememdies, and I am developing arthritis in my knees now.
Do you have any suggestions on medicines or doctors in the New York, Pennsylvania or Ohio area.
Any suggestions
Because what I have been doing is not working.
My knee is structural okay for now, but I have severe pain.
What about any kind of knee replacement, am I too young.
Your opinions would be great
----------

I would suggest that you get an opinion from Dr. Kenneth Marks at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. He is a world-class Orthopedic Surgeon with "gray hair" in the best sense.

What are some good low impact exercises to strengthen the knees?

I was a carpenter for nearly 15 years. Now I have symptoms that indicate chondromalacia or possibly runner's knee (self diagnosed using google). I want to find some exercises to start to relieve the chronic pain and discomfort I have but I'm worried I might do more harm than good.
----------

I tore two ligaments in my right knee a few months ago and these are the exercises my Physical Therapist gave me. They worked.
1. Lay on your back on a bed or couch and try to press the back of your knees down into the bed using your thigh muscles only. Hold for five seconds then relax for five seconds. Do this ten times, relax for about five minutes and repeat.
2. Lay on your side with your legs straight. Raise the upper leg to about 45 degrees slowly and hold for five seconds then slowly lower it. After ten Reps roll over and do the other leg. Do this ten times, relax for about five minutes and repeat.
3. Lay on your back. Bend one knee and slowly raise your other leg (keep it straight) slowly until your thighs are at the same level, hold for five seconds and lower it slowly. Then repeat using your other leg. Do this ten times, relax for about five minutes and repeat.
4.Do the same thing as #3 but this time drag your heal until both legs are bent at the same angle then slide your heal forward until your leg is straight again. Again, do this ten times then do the other leg. Do this ten times, relax for about five minutes and repeat.
I hope this helps. It worked wonders for me and you are never putting any weight on your knees.
I found it ironic that I played Football and Soccer all through High School, served with the 82nd Airborne for ten years and never had knee problems. I crouch down to fix some plumbing under the sink and screw up my knee.
