Ciguatera Fish Poisoning? Treatment!?! Please fast!!?

Is there any treatment for Ciguatera Fish Poisoning
or any types of fish poisoning?

Please reply!! Thank you !
----------

There is no real treatment nor test for ciguatera fish poisoning. Generally, it is diagnosed based on the patient's symptoms plus report of recent consumption of certain kinds of fish (commonly snapper, skipjack and barracuda -- who eats barracuda?!?). To treat patients with ciguatera, you usually treat their symptoms as they show up. So if they have a drop in blood pressure, you give them drugs to bring it back up. If they have diarrhea, you can give them Lomotil. If they have neuro symptoms, give them the appropriate meds for that.

Ciguatera is RARE, but it does subside in a few days. Only a few cases have resulted in long-term illness.

Ciguatera is caused by dinoflagellate (algæ) blooms. Fish consume the algæ or it gets into their bodies, and they store up the toxins in the algæ. When you eat the fish, you eat the toxins in the fish, too. The toxins make you sick.  (+ info)

I'm thinking it's pretty unlikely I have ciguatera poisoning...what do you think?

I live in Canada. Husband and I cooked up some sea bass from a big reputable grocery store here. A few hours later, I feel nauseous, he feels fine. I thought my fish seemed a tad 'cool' in areas but apparently cooking doesn't kill it anyway, and husband is ok, so it's probably something else, right? I mean, this is Canada?

Otherwise, I must be pregnant!

Sea Bass is a Pacific carnivorous fish, so its possible it ate something that ate something that nibbled on a coral reef, somewhere in the food chain.

I got Ciguatera poisoning from eating a seafood pizza, and the friend that shared the pizza didn't get sick.

See your doctor, and look out for neurological symptoms, they are the give-away of ciguatera poisoning. Dizziness, weird hot or cold feelings, sensitivities to light and sound, memory or concentration problems, weakness, etc.

If you do have it, then intravenous mannitol will wash it out. Over the longer term low dose hydrocortisone keeps the symptoms at bay.

You might just have an upset stomach for some other reason, and it will just pass.  (+ info)

Tratment for Ciguatera poisoning?

Chronic poisoning, long term consequences
----------

CHRONIC ciguatera poisoning?? Whoa, dude.......you been livin on a reef? Well, most ciguatoxins are heat stable and lipid soluble, so you might reason they could accumulate in you like they do in big fish.

EXCEPT that they dont. Lots of observation of people who DO get it a lot says that the gastrointestinal and cardiovascular effects of ingestion of ciguatoxin are usually over by 4 days after they began. The weird neuological ones, like temperature reversal, paresthesias, and sensations that your teeth are loose may go on for weeks to months- but that is NOT chronic poisoning, that is a long term effect.

I assume what you mean is that you have long term neurological effects, not chronic poisoning. If you have chronic poisoning, stop eatin dem big fishes. Good time to become a vegetarian.

To your question: the long term neurologial effects have been treated with mannitol (works best when given early), amitryptilene (probably the best treatment for long-term neurological problems), and antihistamines (for itching). Time will help- your prognosis is excellent.  (+ info)

is food poisoning less severe if you have a healthy immune system?

If you have a very healthy immune system, will the symptoms of food poisoning be minor? I realize that some food borne pathogens can be really dangerous and can make you very ill no matter how healthy you are, but for the most common ones, will food poisoning be nothing more than a bad stomach and diarrhea if you are very healthy? (I am emetophobic.) Also, do you HAVE to throw up if you have food poisoning. If you try to keep it down with ginger, antiemetics etc. , is that dangerous?
----------

Far less severe if you have a good immune system.

People with weak immune systems [including the elderly and very young] are frequently cautioned not to eat foods that are perfectly safe for most people, like runny egg yolks and meat that is at all pink.

But once you've eaten something that disagrees with you, let your body get rid of it quickly. Resisting the urge to vomit keeps the poison inside, and you really don't want that.  (+ info)

How does the body react to food poisoning?

What are some symptoms of intentional food poisoning?

My wife and i suspect someone of poisoning her mothers food. she has a life insurance policy and her sister is the beneficiary, well she has diabetis and her kidneys are failing. And she has been getting bloody stools (sorry for the mental picture) . But i was wanting to know if there are any signs of food poisoning that we should look for?
----------

Do NOT get a blood test. To detect a case of food poisoning, you should do a STOOL culture.

As far as food poisonings are concerned, bloody stools are common with Campylobacter, Shigella and E. coli O157:H7 infection.

These three bacteria are easy to detect with a STOOL CULTURE. Also, please note if there are any fevers, vomiting and nausea.

In general, you should see a doctor if your stools are bloody. It could signal infection, hemmorhoids or colon problems (including cancer!). But lord knows, renal failure and diabetes can cause similar problems as well.  (+ info)
