What are ways of detecting a parasitic infection? (Infectious disease doctor please answer this)?

If any medical preofessional could answer this I would greatly appreciate it.

I've read that if your white blood count is elevated, doctors look at your elevated white blood count to determine if your infection might be parasitic. I have read that when a specifc type of white blood cell called eosinophils are above normal that this might indicate a parasitic infection.

Is that true? Can the esinophils not be elevated and it still be parasitic?

And how do you test for parasities? I have read that stool samples and ova test are normally done but some patients require additional testing because their stool samples were clean. And after more blood work was completed and the individual was tested via blood for parasites, they did test positive for a parasite.

What parasites can you get from farm animals, goats, pigs and wild boars? Is it possible to test for coccidiosis, enterotoxemia, and liverflukes in a human?
----------

Eosinophils are typically elevated, sometimes very elevated, in parasitic infections involving certain roundworms (nematodes) and flukes (trematodes). Certain parasitic infections like protozoan parasites do not cause much of an elevated eosinophil count.

If its an intestinal parasite they can usually be detected microscopically in a stool exam. There are also EIA tests and molecular tests available for many intestinal parasites.

Now for blood parasites like malaria and chagas, examination of the blood smear is required to see the parasite. Yes there are blood serology tests available for some also.

Parasites from farm animals would include Taenia (cow and pigs) http://www.examiner.com/x-7707-Infectious-Disease-Examiner~y2010m1d7-Tapeworms-a-slideshow and Trichinella http://www.examiner.com/x-7707-Infectious-Disease-Examiner~y2009m8d6-Trichinosis-its-not-just-an-issue-in-pork (pigs, wild animals like wild boars and bear meat).

Yes you can for liver flukes in humans http://www.examiner.com/x-7707-Infectious-Disease-Examiner~y2009m9d14-Liver-flukes-showing-its-presence-in-the-Vietnamese-highlands (finding the eggs in stool). . Enterotoxemia doesn't affect humans, just animals.  (+ info)
