What are the possible causes of deafness in children that can be treated with a cochlear implant?

I'm looking for diseases or causes that cause deafness in children, but can also be treated with a cochlear implant or any other type of surgery.
I appreciate any information that you can give me on the topic of deafness in children.
I will award the 'best answer' to whoever provides the most relevant and helpful information.
Thank you!

Basically anyone with profound hearing loss that has a properly formed cochlea and properly functioning auditory nerve will probably be a candidate for a cochlear implant. People who lost their hearing due to CMV, rubella, meningitis (if implanted within weeks of onset of illness), genetic factors, Rh factors, or premature birth can probably be eligible for a cochlear implant.  (+ info)

What are the best and worst parts of wearing a Cochlear Implant?

I have been re-tested today and told my hearing is almost flatlining (well certainly significantly dropped in capacity since I was last tested and my current hearing aids are turned up to full capacity). I am being referred to a Cochlear Implant Clinic and just wanted to find out from any current wearers just how "totally hot and awesome" they really are.

I've heard nothing but great things about them. You should be excited! It'll change your life for the better!
Bless you and good luck! :)  (+ info)

Where can I find information about cochlear implants?

I'm writing a research paper regarding cochlear implants, and I need sources, either from the internet or magazines/books. Also, if anyone wanted to give their opinion on the topic, I'd love to hear it.
----------

There are currently three major manufacturers of cochlear implant. Cochlear is probably most common in u.s. http://www.cochlearamericas.com/index.asp Med El is more common in europe http://www.medel.com/ and Advanced Bionics http://www.cochlearimplant.com/index.cfm?langid=1

This is a self help website of regular people who are deaf and hard of hearing http://www.shhh.org/

And other good places to look up info on cochlear implant would be House Ear Institute, Mayo Clinic, and http://www.betterhearing.org/resources/resource.cfm?resourceID=6  (+ info)

how much does it cost in Australia to get cochlear implant surgery done?

I'm asking on behalf of a friend who's brother is profoundly deaf in both ears. Does anyone know how much it costs in Australia to get cochlear implant surgery done? The friend's family are not Australian citizens so probably does not qualify for the reimbursement.

Have you considered medical treatment and surgical help for this in India? My cousin got her surgery from a company called Forerunners Healthcare in India.
She just paid 25% of the amount she was quoted in USA.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as all types of medical treatment and surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your medical treatment and surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.  (+ info)

Where do i start raising funds for a cochlear implant for my deaf two year old.

My little boy is turning three soon and was diagnosed profoundly deaf in both ears he urgently needs a cochlear implant. We already have a trust fund in place through the hospital and cochlear unit that will do the operation, but where do I start. Will I get any response by trying to create a web pagee for him, not that I have a clue how but i can learn. Thanks for any help you can give me. God Bless

Create a website and you could also contact your local news station and the local newspaper and plead with them to run a story on it and give all the information. I would create a website first so that they can give a web address for people who are interested to find out more information on it. Good luck. I hope you get the money you'll need.  (+ info)

Anyone with a child that has a cochlear implant or is going to have the implant any time soon?

I have a 5 month old baby girl who will get a cochlear implant in 3 or 4 months. I would want to know your experiences and maybe keep in touch about progress or similar things.
----------

I don't have a child with implants nor will we have them anytime soon.
My daughter did have fluid in her ears for the 1st year of her life and when her ears were finally drained of all fluids we had a new child.

After her surgery she was very sensitive to all sounds, birds, tv, her older sister, our dog etc. So we had to keep it quiet for the first few days it was painful for Tori to hear things at a normal level. Her speech, still to this day is not at a normal level but your child is young enough so that is should not effect it too badly.

Now with cochlear implants you will need to see the audiologist to make sure that the frequency is at a good level. As well as you will have to follow all the protocols with the surgery aftercare.

As far as the outside world. I am not too sure if your child is deaf or just hearing impaired. The deaf society is separated into those whom are proud that they can not hear and those whom are accepting of the ones whom choose to have corrective surgery. So just keep that in mind as she grows up and enters the real world away from mommy.

I know that you are making the best choice for her that you know of. Just know that it will take some time and all good things that are worth having take hard work and persistence.  (+ info)

Would you force cochlear implants on your child?

If you were to have a deaf child(or do) would you make your child get cochlear implants and if so what age?
----------

My youngest brother is now 19 and became deaf at age 3-4. My parents decided that he should get a cochlear implant rather than use hearing aids at age 7.

I think it was one of the best choices we, as a family made. He gets compliments all the time on how clear he speaks and that if they did not know him, they would not know he was even deaf. He loves the cochlear implant and how much it has changed his life.

The only thing is that, I wouldn't say a hassle, but more time consuming. My brother has an appt. every other month at times to check on his condition and how the cochlear implant is working, however we go to the Univ. of Michigan and is quite far away from us. There are also newer versions of cochlear implant technology and my brother had recently gone into surgery this past summer for it.

Everything works well, however, when it comes to children and cochlear implants, they have to be careful. For many years, my brother always either lost or damaged parts and forgot to charge his batteries all the time. It is quite expensive as well as the parts, if insurance is not paying for it.

Other than that, I would highly reccommend it! My brother has had a cochlear implant for many years and he's not complaining!

*Also if you do decide on it, explain to your child that it may be a discomfort at first, but it will get much better!

Good Luck! =)

----*Edit
I LOVE how she thumbs down everyone EXCEPT hers. *Ahem 2boyslostmind! A little childish don't you think? Oh and to clarify, the child DOES NOT NEED to learn sign language 'anyways', it depends.

My brother had his cochlear implants very young and he attended a public school afterwards because he was capable of speaking and learning the way everyone else does! He does not know sign language, although he says he would like to learn, but not because he needs to rather just because.

Anyways, I didn't add this.. but it is up to your child and you. Bring up the choices you have and go over them with him/her. Make a decision together!  (+ info)

should I get a cochlear implant for my right ear?

Ok, So I am hearing impaired for both ears. My left ear is moderately impaired. When I put my hearing aid on for this ear. It becomes near perfect meaning i can pick up sounds greatly. As for my right ear, It is almost completely deaf, when I put hearing aid on for that ear. It does not really help as far as my everday life. I was just wondering would a cochlear implant really help my right ear to become just as good as my right ear?
----------

You should talk to your ENT. You may not be eligible for a cochlear implant if you highly benefit from use of a hearing aid in one ear.  (+ info)

I need help on writing a thesis statement on deafness/cochlear implants, could someone help me out, please?

The purpose of having the cochlear implants.
What benefits to expect from having the surgery?
----------

This is very hard to answer everyone has a different effect, but most likely they will be able to hear things they could not hear before, but again that is saying the surgery worked!

I will say I am not a fan of Cochlear Implants, why because they no longer fit into the Deaf Culture or into the Hearing Culture.  (+ info)
