Does any one know why it occurs? is it purely genetic, or do environmental factors have an effect?
----------

Coloboma is a defect arising from improper fusion of the layers in the developing eye. It can affect the eyelid, iris, choroid, retina, optic disc or the lens of the eye.

A similar defect can also occur as a result of injury or eye surgery - but coloboma is a congenital malformation.  (+ info)

How much would contacts be for someone with coloboma?

I have a coloboma in my right eye, and have been dying to get contacts for the longest time. How much would contacts be for someone with this condition?
----------

A coloboma can actually occur in several structures of your eye. If it was in your retina, your need for contact lenses would not be any different than for anyone else. If it is in your iris and it has left you with a strange shaped pupil, it will depend on a number of factors. You may be able to get the desired look with conventional colored lenses like Fresh Look or Acuvue 2 Colors. If that is the case, the charge for the lenses will be about $45 per 6 pack. It may be necessary to have a custom lens made to make your pupil round. If this is the case, it will be over $100 per lens  (+ info)

How much can you see with Bilateral Coloboma?

My 3 year old boy has bilateral coloboma of the retina and the optic nerve. My husband and I are wondering how much he can see cause he can't tell us he has a mental disorder and hasn't learned how to talk yet. I would like to know if anyone else has this and how much you can see. That way I have the knowledge of how he see's and be able to help him better. Please help if you have this eye condition
----------

I have bilateral coloboma of the retina. It doesn't affect my left eye, but 3/4 of my retina is missing in my left. I can see well enough to drive, my eyesight not bein impaired in my left eye, but I would imagine that coloboma of the retina AND optic nerve would result in very significant vision loss.
Hope this helps  (+ info)

Anyone with an older child with an optic nerve coloboma?

I have a 3 year old with a lazy eye and an optic nerve coloboma in her left eye. We've had her vision tested and it looks good now. She doesn't have peripheral vision in that eye, but it doesn't seem to effect her. I'm wondering if anyone has any older children (10+ years ) that have this same condition and if so, if they are having any vision issues. I know that every kid is different, I'd just like a general idea of things to expect in the future.
Thanks!!!

I am 24 and I was diagnosed with optic nerve coloboma when I was 3. It has a little affect on my sight, I am 20/40 in my right eye and was told that it was probably as good as it gets with my vision having that. My periphail vision is very weak but it has not stopped me from playing sports, getting a driver's license, or working. To be honest I never even knew I had anything wrong til I was in the third grade when I got glasses. Just keep an eye on it and have pictures taken every few years of that eye to make sure there is no change. I just had new pics of my eye and the only thing that they have found new is some arterial sheething and stretching of my macular. Other than having poor periphail vision, nearsightedness and an astigmatism i see fine with the help of glasses or contacts. Hope this helps.  (+ info)

Some photos of my daughters eyes appear white instead of red.She was diagnosed with coloboma. Is this why?

It is never both eyes at the same time. One or the other will appear white and the other red - and sometimes neither is white and both are red. Could this be a side effect of the coloboma and the angle of the photo, or is it more than likely retinoblastoma? Her exam with the specialist that diagnosed her with coloboma was pretty extensive and we assume that he would have seen if it were retinoblastoma.
----------

Wow, I just happened onto this topic, and I saw the word "coloboma".... I also have coloboma. It is not common, so I hardly ever meet anyone else who has it. Anyway, to try and answer your question, what part(s) of her eyes does the coloboma affect? I have coloboma of the optic nerve in one eye, and of retinas in both. My eye doctors have always said that the eye with the optic nerve affected looks like a big, white flower when they dialate it and look into it. And, I have noticed every now and then one of my eyes will look white, or super reflective in a picture. If you daughter has colobomas of the optic nerves, maybe that is the reason that her eyes appear white in pictures sometimes. I don't know anything about retinoblastoma, but I do know that with coloboma of the retina like I have, part of the retina is just plain missing. That could be affecting the appearance in pictures, too. I suppose if you are truly worried about her having a secondary condition, you could get a second opinion from another doctor. Good luck, and if you have any other questions about your daughter's coloboma, please feel free to contact me. : )  (+ info)

Does anyone know if Coloboma in infants can be caused by exposure to mold while the mother is pregnant?

I've read of the following possible causes of coloboma in infants:

problems during fetal eye development with no known cause
genetics
may be a part of CHARGE syndrome - a congenital disease

Haven't seen anything about mold exposure during pregnancy and I doubt that it could cause it.  (+ info)

Coloboma and developmental delays?

Can Coloboma cause developmental delays in babies and toddlers? I am asking because a good friends daughter has it and is very far behind with her milestones. I read somewhere it can cause other problems not related to the eye but I wanted some more information on it. I was hoping someone here who has experience with Coloboma or is an Ophthalmologist could help me out.
----------

Are you talking about a coloboma of the eyelid, iris, lens, retina, choroid, or optic nerve? Any one of them is the result of an incomplete closure of the embryonic fissure. A coloboma is generally associated with multiple genetic syndromes, including trisomy 22, trisomy 18, trisomy 13, and chromosome 18 deletion. Thus, the coloboma and developmental delay are caused by the same syndrome. In other words, the coloboma does not cause the development delay or vice versa; together, they are caused by the same underlying condition and may be associated with other systemic defects, such as congenital defects of the heart and blood vessels.  (+ info)

Coloboma in my 1 month old daughter?

I have heard that it is related to birth defect of some sort? what kind, WHAT IS COLOBOMA? Is there any treatment or cure, will she have any physical defect that you will be able to see.
----------

Congenital cleft in some part of the eye (commonly the iris, but may also occur in the lid(s) or pigment epithelium and choroid); caused by faulty closure during prenatal development; usually hereditary; secondary complication: cataracts. Associated conditions are: microphthalmia, polydactyly and mental retardation. Depending on the extent and location of the coloboma, there may be decreased visual acuity, nystagmus, strabismus, photophobia, and a loss of visual fields.

TREATMENT: Cosmetic contact lenses and/or sunglasses for colobomas of the iris. Optical aids may be helpful.

IMPLICATIONS: Visual fields measurement is suggested when a coloboma of some-part of the inner eye is suspected (i.e., choroid or pigment epithelium).  (+ info)

will my coloboma affect my getting a drivers license?

Coloboma may or may not affect the visual acuity to the degree that it will have an impact on your ability to get a driver's liscense. It depends on the severity and location of the colomba.  (+ info)
