What is an example of a social problem caused by the common cold?

Any social problem caused by or related to the common cold,
Thanks so much!
----------

The most obvious answer is nobody wants to be around someone who is coughing and sneezing. The best thing anyone can do to prevent catching or spreading illness is to Wash Your Hands. I know we've all been told that and seen it on signs but, I'm serious. It takes less than 5 minutes to do whereas a cold or flu could keep you down for a week or more.  (+ info)

What are some good ways to ease the symptoms of the common cold?

My fiance and I have that lovely common cold-- fever, stuffed and runny noses, and sore throats. It's annyoing more than anything, not too severe, but all the dust blowing around makes it pretty miserable. So do you guys have anything that can ease the symptoms a bit?

And don't suggest a doctor lol-- we only go the the doc for things that are life-threatening :)
----------

It's incredibly cliche to say "drink plenty of fluids and get plenty of rest and eat chicken noodle soup", but it's become cliche because it works, so do it.

For your stuffed nose, use VapoRub. I know, it's sticky and it doesn't feel good, but it will make you feel better, it will unclog your nose. Another thing I have tried is eating hot sauce out of the bottle (with no food)- that may help ease your congestion. A steamy shower while breathing in through the nose should also help your congestion.

With the weather changing, make sure you are wearing appropriate apparel- sweater or light jacket- so your cold doesn't get worse. Make sure you're disposing of your used tissues and washing your hands frequently, so you don't spread your germs. Also, once you get well, you don't want to re-infect each other.
For the sore throat, drink some hot tea and use cough drops (ricola ones are great- they're "vocal gold")- drinking orange juice should help, too.

You say you don't want to go to the doctor, just make sure that if you're not feeling better in a couple of days that you get checked. Also, if you have a chronic health condition, make sure you check with your doctor to make sure that any over-the-counter medicines you're taking won't cause a complication.  (+ info)

Can a stomach virus turn into the common cold?

I had the stomach virus a few weeks ago, and I believe that I had the common cold for about 4 days, and I still have it. Could I have gotten the common cold from a stomach virus?
----------

Hi Tech Dude,

Stomach virus! Do you really believe it? My stomach is acidic in nature. Bacteria and viruses get lysed there. Once the bacteria and viruses are lysed they cannot cause any other disorder.  (+ info)

Why our body can not create antibody for common cold or cough?

There are vaccines for many diseases. Our body can make antibody for many diseases. Disease like small pox, chicken pox, diptheria, Hepatitis would attach human only once. After that our body is prepared the antibody and so no further infection is not possible for those diseases.

However the common cold or cough are also caused by viruses. Neither our body can make antibody nor there is any vaccine for it.

1. What is the difference between a cold and the flu?
Although the flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses, they are caused by different viruses. Because they have similar symptoms, it can be difficult to tell them apart. But generally cold symptoms are much milder than flu.

Common cold symptoms include:

Sore throat
Stuffy nose
Runny nose
Cough
Mild fever
The flu, on the other hand, often causes higher fever, chills, body ache, and fatigue.

2. Why isn't there a cold vaccine?
The common cold can be caused by nearly 250 different viruses. It's just too difficult for scientists to prepare a vaccine that protects against all of the cold viruses. Also, there's less need for a cold vaccine. Colds are minor infections of the throat, nose, and sinuses. Colds generally come and go with no serious complications. You're miserable for a few days, then it's over.

3. Could my cold symptoms actually be allergies?
If you are sniffling, but not achy or feverish at all, you may very well have allergies. Also, if your symptoms last longer than two weeks, and you also have red, itchy eyes, the evidence points to allergies. However, it's often hard to tell because people with allergies and asthma are more likely to get colds. They may already have inflamed and irritated lungs - so they are less able to fight off a cold virus  (+ info)

Can your armpit lymph nodes hurt when you have a common cold?

I think that I just have the common cold, but my armpits just started hurting earlier today and they've been like that all day. Muscles in certain parts of my body also hurt. This hasn't happened to me durring a cold. Is it normal?
----------

It could be normal, but it might not be. I suggest you should check with your doctor.  (+ info)

What kinds of foods can help me get over the common cold?

I know that fruits and vegetables are important for prevention of the common cold...but what about for treatment? What are some of the best foods I can eat to lessen the severity and length of my cold?
----------

Chicken soup! Grandma knew what she was talking about.

This from the Mayo Clinic: Generations of parents have spooned chicken soup into their sick children. Now scientists have put chicken soup to the test, discovering that it does seem to help relieve cold and flu symptoms in two ways. First, it acts as an anti-inflammatory by inhibiting the movement of neutrophils — immune system cells that participate in the body's inflammatory response. Second, it temporarily speeds up the movement of mucus through the nose, helping relieve congestion and limiting the amount of time viruses are in contact with the nose lining. Researchers at the University of Nebraska compared homemade chicken soup with canned versions and found that many, though not all, canned chicken soups worked just as well as soups made from scratch.

Check out the link to the Mayo Clinic site below for other suggestions.

If you are looking for an all natural way to boost your immune system to keep your body healthy, check out Immune Alert. It's an extract from baker's yeast that primes your immune system to attack germs. My family takes it and we've noticed many fewer colds/sinus infections even though our son started day care this year. This isn't just a feel good homeopathic solution either -- it really works and has the research to prove it. Check it out. (see link to their site below).  (+ info)

How do you know if you have Swine flu instead of a normal flu/common cold?

I'm coughing a lot lately, have a really warm forehead because of a big headache and I sneeze sometimes. I got the sickness from my sisters. How do I know if I have just a common cold instead of swine flu? I know they're symtoms are closely the same but what's different about them so I know if I have a normal cold instead of swine flu?
----------

Only a doctor can tell you yes it's true, but i still wouldn't bother going, chances are you have a normal flu, the swine flu is no worse than a common cold, I know some one who go swine flu I myself don't have it, he didn't go to the hospital or anything and is fine. If you go to the doctor, you'll get the vaccination which will cost a ton and won't do anything as later in the future there will be a stronger flu virus and you'll have to do it all over again. Don't get the vaccination, let your body heal it on it's own, it can and will do it.  (+ info)

Why does the common cold make a person feel SO BAD?

The common cold is not life-threatening. Why does it make a person feel like death warmed over? I've been lying around for three days now with no sign of relief.

What is it about a little cold that puts people out of action so quickly?
----------

People dislike change and enjoy being healthy, when you get a cold you realize that you are not entirely healthy, and through some magical thought process of the brain you actually make yourself feel much worse than you would normally be...

Don't worry, it -is- just a cold and would be done with in a week, until then, you're not dead...

We hope.  (+ info)

Is contracting and recovering from a case of the common cold of any benefit to my immune system?

I am a 17 yr old male with great general health, but I frequently expose myself to others' germs and as a result I catch the common cold somewhat often. Is this beneficial or harmful (or neither?) to my immune system and overall health in the long run?

Thanks in advance.
----------

It is very beneficial. It's like working out a muscle, the more you use it the stronger it gets. Now, I do not advocate eating off the diner floor just to be sure you give your immune system a workout! But I personally do not use antibacterial soaps, wipes, etc. for exactly this reason. Take normal precautions to avoid becoming seriously ill, but don't worry about catching a few colds compromising your overall health.  (+ info)

Are there any cures for the common cold?

----------
