What medication is for Viral Conjunctivitis treatment?

I went to the eye doctor today having had a red, swollen, sensitive eye all day yesterday. I was told by him that it is a viral infection and I was prescribed Besivance. I just read the box and it says it is for treating Bacterial conjunctivitis, says absolutely nothing about any viral treatment... Anyone able to shed some light before I call and ask them a series of questions again? Thanks.

Why have I been given Paracetamol for viral conjunctivitis?

Mr dr diagnosed viral conjunctivitis yesterday and said I have a very red throat. She's given me eye drops but also says I have to take Paracetamol, but I don't understand why?

Can anyone help?
Because there is no cure for a viral infection. For example when we get a cold it is a virus so we can only take paracetemol.
When we get a bacterial infection it is only then that it can be treated e.g pneumonia  (+ info)

It's sometime hard to differentiate between viral and bacterial conjunctivitis. Viral conjunctivitis usually has a watery discharge but bacterial infections can have the same presentation. Often, a viral conjunctivitis will have a secondary bacterial infection.

Doing viral studies and bacterial cultures is too expensive to do routinely. Therefore, most of the time conjunctivitis is treated with a broad spectrum antibiotic even when thought to be viral.

Infections are contagious in the early stages, sometimes even before symptoms are noted. With treatment and resolution of the infection the risk of spreading the disease decreases. The number of infecting particle decreases. In many infections the "prodromal" period, the earliest symptoms indicating the onset of a disease, is the most contagious time.

So, to your question, no. The infection is not more contagious if the eyes are healing.  (+ info)

You ain't a doctor honey. If you have discharge coming out of your eyes, it isn't a normal side effect of a cold and you need to check it out.

In the meantime, bathing the eye with saline every 4 hours or so might help the irritation. Don't rub it, every time you do you recontaminate the area with whatever is on your hands.

You could have any number of things ranging from an allergy to something that could do permanent damage.
You only get one set of eyes in a lifetime, and playing doctor with them is potentially dangerous. So look after them and see a doctor, or at the very least visit your local pharmacist. But don't self medicate. It can be dangerous.  (+ info)

I am pretty sure that I have viral conjunctivitis. I have a watery, pink eye, a cold (that frequently accompanies the conjunctivitis), and no yellow/green crusties (which typically indicate bacterial conjunctivitis). Doctors can't do anything for viral conjunctivitis- they just have to let it run the course. Should I even bother going to see him (I am inbetween health insurance policies, but if consensus is yes, I will go ahead and pay to go)?
Have you tried natural tears or any kind of eye drop that you can buy over the counter? There is an over the counter treatment now for pink eye that you can buy at the drug store without a prescription, called " Similasan" pink eye relief.  (+ info)

I went to my Opthalmologist and he said that this lasts 7-10 days. It's my 6th day now and the medical certificate he gave me covers only up to today but I'm still not okay. My concern is I may be contagious. Should I still skip work tomorrow or until it's better?
Definately talk to your boss about the situation and see what he wants you to do. Make sure he knows you are still contagious.  (+ info)

It is a common misconception that there is nothing that can be done medicinally for a viral conjunctivitis. Is there anything that can be done to kill the virus? No. BUT, is there anything that can be done to make you feel ALOT better while the virus is running its course. Most definitely. I regularly prescribe topical steroid drops for this purpose. This does nothing to kill the virus but it suppresses the eye's inflammatory response to the virus while the virus is running its course. This allows the patient to enjoy life and continue with their day to day activities in a much more acceptable fashion. One of my favorites drops to use for this purpose is Tobradex. It combines a corticosteroid (that's what makes you feel better) with an antibiotic to provide a cover for any possible secondary bacterial infection that could occur while the immune response is being suppressed. The virus won't leave your ocular tissues any faster but I promise you that you will enjoy life much more while you are waiting for the virus to get the h$ll out of dodge city.

EDIT: You see. I told you so. Even many eye doctors don't understand this concept. I've already gotten a thumbs down. I PROMISE you though what I am saying WORKS!!!! I've been doing this for 26 years and MY patients are the ones that are happier. If you want to suffer through this then by all means go ahead and suffer. I can’t get the words out to him. Do I even need to tell him? If I do he won’t let me wear contact lenses anymore.
He must have noticed that your eye looks a little strange. It's a common thing. If it hurts or gets worse or doesn't start to clear in a day you should get it treated. I've had it maybe 10 times in 37 years of wearing contacts. Sometimes it cleared up the next day, sometimes I need antibiotic drops and once it was an amoeba infection. That time they started talking cornea transplant but after a few months I was able to return to wearing contacts in that eye.  (+ info)

She's five months old. I don't want her to get conjunctivitis too, the poor baby. But I pick her up and carry her around every single day and when I didn't even pat her today, she kept following me around wondering why I'm not playing with her. How can you distinguish between allergic and viral conjunctivitis? How long can each last?

They look the same except that viral conjunctivitis is just that caused by an internal illness where as allergic conjunctivitis is cause by something external like pollen or dust. Viral conjunctivitis could be cured by going to the doc and getting meds same with the other.  (+ info)
