croup ?????????????

this is an add on to my previous question asked, i know the text book says the cough typically comes out at night and morning when the air is cooler but my son has the cough all day and all night with a fever and sore throat he wont take predmix and gets really worked up when i try to get him to have it. also when he breaths i can hear crackles and wheezing

Dude I left you an answer in your other question I would advise you too read it and follow it. Your son is unwell with either a viral or bacterial infection. Keep an eye on him keep his fluids up follow the direction on the other question about how to control his temperature and if you have any problem take him back to the doctors or if his breathing gets worse call an ambulance. Because I want to help here it is all again:

Being a paramedic my first advice would be any concerns definitely go to hospital if you have any concerns. I your child wakes up again in the morning call an ambulance that's what we are here for and no paramedic has a problem with taking a sick kiddie to hospital.

As to your question
1) to keep the temperature under control you can use both nurofen and panadol. so give nurfen then 2hours later panadol then 2 hours later nurofen and then panadol 2 hours later and so on.

2) The sore throat could be from the viral/Bacterial infection that has caused the croup or from the croup it self.

3) with the mucus in his chest very possible that its a chest infection which in turn has caused the croup.

All up your son has a infection and has croup. Best treatment is to keep the temperature under control keep an eye on him over the next few days and go back to the doctor if hes not getting better. If your son wakes up again with the croup again do these steps

1) call an ambulance as it could become life threatening.
2) got to the bathroom close all windows and doors and turn the hot tap on in the shower and steam up the room.
3) go into the steamed up room with your son until th ambulance arrives as this will help your son with his croup and make it easier for him to breathe.

all the best of luck and if you could let me know how it goes over the next few days.  (+ info)

How many times can/ should a toddler get croup?

My daughter is now 2 1/2 and she has croup at the moment. But the thing is she had it last winter and then again in march. The scary thing is that she had a febrile seizure when she had croup in march and it was very scary. This time her croup is very mild and she does not even have a fever, its just a barky cough. Has any one else had there child have it more than once?
----------

My son had it twice, it wasn't as bad the second time around. By the way, my son is now 27 & is fine. You can contact me if you have any questions about how we treated him at home the second time he had croup.  (+ info)

Would having croup have any effect on athletic performance?

I suffered from a number of episodes of croup when I was a kid. It occurred every other week for a couple of years. One night I turned blue and was put in the hospital for a few days. I have never felt my cardiovascular endurance is that of other people. Even thought I have been running for years I still am bad at it. Could there be any residual effect from suffering from croup years ago. I am in my mid twenties now.
----------

It's less likely to have affected your cardiovascular system and more likely to have affected your lungs. You could have scarring in your lungs from recurrent infections. This could affect how much oxygen passes from your lungs into your blood. Even if you are taking a deep breath and getting a lot of air into your lungs, the oxygen might not might not be able to cross the barrier from your lungs to your blood because of the scars. This would definitely decrease your endurance (if your heart and other muscles aren't getting enough oxygen).
You should get checked by your doctor for pulmonary function testing and maybe something called a ventilation-perfusion test.  (+ info)

Is there a shot to help reduce the symptoms of croup?

My son gets croup every time he gets a bad cold. It is horrible, for days he is lethargic and feverish with heavy breathing and racing heart. I've heard that there is a shot he can get when he comes down with croup to help. Does anyone have any information about this? Thanks.

Steriods can be given by injection if the child has viral croup, and the steam method hasn't worked.

What is helpfull for a child who has croup?

My daughter is 5 months old and she seems to have a croup cough, today is Sunday and the doctor's office is closed, I want to know if anyone has any suggestions on what to do at home to make her feel a little better at least for today. PLEASE HELP!!!!
----------

When my son had the croup, the doctor told me to either turn on the hot shower and let him take some deep breaths of the hot steam, or take him outside into the cold air (just make sure to bundler her up if you take her out). They told me that this would help to open up his airways. If she has a real problem breathing or starts gasping for air, turning blue around her lips...take her to the emergency room right away. They can give her steriods to help that will work really fasy. It is a scary thing to have a kid with croup, but she will get better. Good Luck and hope she feels better soon.  (+ info)

Why is a cool mist humidifier better for croup than a warm mist humidifier?

My kids have bronchitis and croup and the dr. recommended we use one. I was just curious why a warm mist humidifier wouldn't work.
----------

croup is a viral inflamatory process. the cool air and humidity reduces the swelling and eliminates the stridor/ cough.

warm mist humidifiers also grow bacteria....  (+ info)

What are the signs of croup in a 10 month old?

Can someone please tell me what are the signs of croup and if my son does have it will the anitbiotics that he is on for an ear infection help clear that up also or do I need to get him something else? Thanks for the answers ahead of time!
----------

My son just had croup last week. They will have a dry cough that sounds like a barking cough. The doctor gave my son oral steroids for croup but no antibiotics so I would guess they probably don't help.  (+ info)

Is it possible to have croup at 8 yrs old?

My child is prone to croup and has had it a few times before. The last episode was maybe at age 6. Is it normal to have it at 8 yrs old? Each article I read says that croup occurs at a earlier age.
No one has answered my question directly...
I know what croup and I know how to treat it. I just want to know if it's normal to have it a 8 yrs old.
I meant to say "at 8 yrs old".
----------

Yes it is .. the peer reviewed medical literature is scattered with children older than 8 years of age with croup (laryngotracheobronchitis ) ...

My almost 4 month old has been diagnosed with croup?

I gave him his oral steroid about 30-45 minutes ago, but I still hear him coughing pretty bad. How long does it take for the steroid to relieve his symptoms some? How long does croup last? Is there anything else I can do to help him sleep better with all the congestion in his throat?
