Can you give cough meds for cough due to croup?

My husband thinks you can and i am not convinced.
dont think it will work, my grandson is in intensive care at moment with it since yesterday. he is 17 months and has tonsillitis as well, suddenly he couldnt breathe and turned blue they said it was croup. hes a bit better tonight but they are keeping him as every time they take him off oxygen he struggles to breathe. if ur are at all worried u should go to doc/a&e meanwhile i think steam is the usual treatment u should put yr bath on or a kettle to get some steam going then let child inhale the steam.  (+ info)

My 3yo has croup/bronchitis and is on anti-biotics but he still has trouble with coughing?

The doctor gave him amoxicillin and pretension for his cough. He has been taking these for 2 days. He still has the cough but it's looser and more phlemy. He has a vaporizer in his room and If been giving him warm baths to help break up his chest. Is there anything else I do for him?
He is taking prednisone, sry spell check messed it up, sry.
my neighbor had croup and was on prednisone for 3 or 4 days, and after those days the bad cough stopped, but a more normal cough lingered for 5-7 days....if it gets bad again, or doesnt go away in a week, see the dr again.
it might be lasting longer cause he also has bronchitis also.

theres not much else u can do for him but keep him happy as possible and comfy surrounded by fun things  (+ info)

My 8 month old has croup we have a heater in his room and a humidifier should they be used together? Tips?

I would think that the humidifier would make things humid (duh) but the heater would dry things out... kind of counter productive. This is just my thoughts. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated... we have to run the heater cause it gets rather cold in his room at night.
For Croup you usually want cool humid air. I've actually heard that when it is really bad (the child is coughing uncontrolably) people take them outside in the cool air. I've done it myself and it seemed to help. I would put the humidifier and lose the heater. Dress him up a little more maybe and if it gets too cold then maybe use the heater for short periods of time to warm up the room

If you really, really don't want to get croup any more, the best solution is to wash your baby's hands. Sounds crazy, huh? But croup is caused by the same viruses that cause colds, and the best way to avoid getting a cold is to practice good hygiene.

In grown-ups, a case of croup would really just be larygitis. Big deal, right? But in little kids, the swelling constricts their airways, making it hard to breathe or cough and causing that characteristic barking sound.

So. Croup isn't dangerous unless you can't get it under control. If you've recently had it twice, you know that either a hot, steamy environment or a cool, humid environment are good for relaxing the airway and helping your child breathe. Turn on a hot shower, and hang out in the bathroom breathing the steam, or head outside where the cooler night air might help. (Most attacks of croup come on at night, and kids go to bed seeming fine only to wake up in a panic.)

If you can't control it at home, the ER can administer a dose of oral steroids that will reduce the swelling and keep it reduced for a while.  (+ info)

Croup is a common respiratory problem characterized by a harsh, barking cough and is most common in children.

Even though croup is a minor illness, it can be frightening during an episode or attack of intense symptoms.

Keep your child calm and humidiy the air. You can also take your child into the bathroom, shut the door, and turn your shower on very hot to steam up the room. Sit in the bathroom with your child so the steam can relax the cough.

If this does not help in about 30 minutes you should take your child to the doctor or emergency room. They can administer extra oxygen and medication. I don't know of any over-the-counter medication for croup. The steam or humidfier are your best bet.

Croup cough after I eat a lot?

For the last year and 1/2 or so, every time I eat a big meal, I cough a "croup" cough about twice, and then my throat is clear. Does anyone know what this could be? Any possibility it is pneumonia? I am planning on seeing a doctor soon, but I just wondered if anyone else knew.
It's definitely not pneumonia. It could be from milk products or just mechanical in nature with the diaphragm pushing upwards on the lungs due to meal size. Try eating smaller portions to find out but also visit the doctor for a professional opinion and tests.  (+ info)

My 6 month old daughter just got out of the hospital and has croup. I am wondering generally how long does it last. The doctor said about 2 weeks but I am wondering is that the norm?

it has to do with the tempature differce and the hewmidity in the air. ask your doctor to explain it in english(lol) so that you know for sure what's goin on. dont be afraid to ask, i mean considering it is your kids life your talking about. hope your 4 yr old gets better.  (+ info)
