Is it ok to move to vegetarian?

Ok, I am practicing buddhism and I wanted to start being a vegetarian but I have cystinosis and had a kidney transplant. My Parents say I need my protein so I shouldnt be a vegetarian, they say that the doctors wont want me to be a vegetarian I need some answers and suggestions of what to do about this. i want to switch to vegetarian
----------

there is protein in almost everything you eat, so i wouldnt worry so much about getting enough. people thing the body needs a huge amount of protein every day, when it actually functions best with smaller amounts. too much of a single type of protein (i.e. meat eggs or cheese) can flood the system and delay the production of proteins not present in that source

i recommend reading The China Study, where a scientist who used to work for the meat and dairy industries found a link between consumption of animal protein and cancer. in rats that already had cancer, the ones that were fed milk protein eventually died of the cancer, but in the rats fed vegetable protein, the cancer slowed down or was stopped.

keep in mind, the bodies of rats and humans are not the same, but it raises doubts about how healthy animal-derived foods really are

a lot of doctors today went to school and learned about nutrition years ago, when studies like this hadnt happened yet and as far as they knew, meat was great for you. things have changed in that time, new information is available, and what they thought was good for you may not be.

see a specialty vegetarian/vegan nutritionist if that is possible, and know beforehand what your body needs more of because of your condition (protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, etc.) then a nutritionist gan tell you which vegan foods will provide those food molecules that you need the most of.  (+ info)
