Has anyone's pet experienced deafness after being injected with Gentamicin for a canine ear infection?

My labrador received an injection of Gentamicin and became totally deaf within the first few days. That was 3 months ago, and a little of her hearing has returned. Our vet said "oops, this happens sometimes" -- If your dog has experienced something like this, please let me know. And please advise as to what course of action I should now take.

What can correct unilateral sound-conduction deafness?

Also, what can be done for acoustic nerve deafness?
----------

Nothing but hearing aids. I am not aware of any other known solution for Unilateral deafness.

One of the least common causes of acoustic nerve deafness is also one of the most worrisome: acoustic neuroma, which is a benign tumor of the auditory nerve. Acoustic neuromas are worrisome because of their location -- they are right next to the brainstem and may thus cause very serious problems as they grow. If there are no obvious explanations for asymmetric nerve deafness, it is often necessary to order a special study, such as an MRI, to eliminate the possibility of acoustic neuroma.

For treatment of Acoustic neuroma, you ought to visit http://www.med.umn.edu/otol/library/aneuroma/treatmen.htm  (+ info)

The only possible treatment for profound deafness is a cohlear implant. However, these only work if the auditory nerve is intact and not damaged.
You can read more about them here:

Meanwhile, your family can start learning sign language, and become connected with the deaf community.

Best wishes.  (+ info)

How do you cope with deafness?

What do you do when you have always been a hearing person and then you have to be a totally deaf person? How does someone cope with this?

What happens if you lose your sight too???
----------

I was born hearing, and lived the first 18 years of my life with "perfect" hearing before I showed hearing loss on a hearing test. I am now 24, my left ear is aided and my right ear will no longer process. I am severely hard-of-hearing with progressive, unexplained hearing loss.

It's hard. Coping is hard. Learning ASL is hard. Not to say it's not liveable, but it's really hard. You are losing something you always knew (hearing) and being thrust into new experiences and learning to live life in a completely different way. You get support as you can (groups, friends, school, family) and do the best you can. Deafness isn't a horrible thing, but yes, it's hard when you were hearing before and are transitioning into something new.  (+ info)

what are the causes of a child wth mild deafness?

i just want to know how child deafness can be treated.
----------

Please go to the doctor. This is something not to be taken lightly as no one can truly diagnose nor treat this child over the internet. This situation warrants proper examination by a medical professional. Good luck.  (+ info)

does diagnostic test assure unilateral deafness for my son?

My son got his diagnostic test on his 6th week after couple of hearing screen test. His left ear failed both in autoaccoustic and ABR test. Does this mean he is deaf in one ear or there can be anyother reason for failing. I have not met the ENT yet. The audiologist said no fluids, profound loss. She did not do temponometry test. Please help . Thank you .
----------

I don't know about these particular tests, but I do have unilateral deafness and I know about screening tests. I thought I'd answer since no-one else has! It sounds like a problem was picked up with your son first of all when he had a screening test. "Screening" tests (for all kinds of health problems) are designed to be a bit over-sensitive, meaning they pick up quite a lot of kids who turn out to have nothing wrong. These children get sorted out from children with a genuine problem by follow-up tests. The follow-up tests are a lot more accurate. If the word "diagnostic" is used, e.g. "diagnostic test" this mean that it gives a definitive answer. So if it was a 'diagnostic' hearing test and the audiologist said there was 'profound loss' then unfortunately it does sound like there is a problem with that ear.

On a brighter note, unilateral deafness is almost trivial and will probably have very little effect on your son. It would certainly not affect speech or anything like that. I've had it since I was 3 (due to whooping cough/pertussis). My only problems with it are that I find it harder than other people to follow what someone is saying if there is a lot of background noise, like at a party, and I can't tell the direction of where a sound is coming from. That's it. My only issues are missing gossip at parties and trying to figure out where someone is when I hear them call my name from a distance! Hope your son is OK, good luck with it all!  (+ info)

Can ringing in the ears cause deafness?

My mom has ringing in the ears and is afraid of going deaf. Is it possible to go deaf from ear ringing?
----------

typically hearing loss and ringing in ears coincide. As cells in the inner ear are damaged and hearing loss progresses many times the ringing starts to occur. The ringing is a sign that likely hearing loss has already started for her. The ringing will not make hearing loss get worse. She needs to be evaluated by an audiologist to see how bad her hearing is. She needs to try to protect her hearing from loud noise and may need hearing aids.  (+ info)
