I have been to Cuba before but now worry about dengue fever. Should I risk it?

It always felt like home (in Varadero). But I have not been for 6 years and reports of dengue fever, of unsanitary conditions in previously clean hotels (in travellers reviews) worry me. What is the present situation? Really.

How does the dengue mosquito get infected with the virus?

I know the species Aedes Aegypti is the only one that can carry the virus, and that only if it's gotten the virus it can infect someone. The question is how does the mosquito get the virus that is later on passed on to a human?
----------

In all the diseases carried by the mosquito (malaria by female Anopheles, yellow fever by Culex and dengue fever by Aedes egypti), the mosquito acts as a vector ie it transfers the disease-causing organism from an infected mammal (which could be man) to another healthy animal.

So, the answer to your question is that the virus would have been picked up from an infected person or animal that the mosquito bit before biting you.

I hope this helps. If not IM me.  (+ info)

Can you have dengue even if the feeding was interrupted?

How long should the mosquito be feeding on you enough for you to have dengue?
----------

One milisecond is enough.. Just enough for the mosquito to get that virus into you and that takes no time at all.. I had dengue twice in Asia and it is not fun  (+ info)

General Discussion

Dengue Fever is an acute viral infection characterized by fever. It is caused by a bite from mosquitoes carrying dengue virus. The primary form of Dengue Fever is characterized by a skin rash and a high fever with severe pain in the head and muscles. Other symptoms may include shaking chills, diarrhea, and vomiting. Bouts of extreme exhaustion may last for months after the initial symptoms.

The secondary forms of this disorder are called Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever and Dengue Shock Syndrome. These usually are caused by a secondary infection with a different type of Dengue virus (Type 2), but may also be caused by the same virus that causes Dengue Fever. Several days after onset other symptoms may include fever, bleeding under the skin, red spots on the legs, and bleeding into the intestines. A marked fall in blood pressure (shock) occurs in very severe cases.  (+ info)

What should we eat, if we got dengue fever, in order to build back/up the platelet?

Patient is now in hospital. Seems no medicine, only putting in platelet. Thanks for everyones help.
----------

Well, dengue is a fad here. I noticed you put it in infectious but its not an infectious disease. Anyway, there is really no food to bring that back up, just tell them to eat healthy, hearty meals. They really can only put platelets, and its quite disturbing. Sometimes, people in severe stages need 10 bags but they live through, don't worry!  (+ info)

how'll someone get Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever instead of Dengue Fever? only after repeated bites by mosquitoes?

i would like to know that why dengue fever is divided into DF and DHF? is it for the different approach of managements? how will someone get DHF instead of DF? i read in some literatures saying that only after repeated bites by the mosquito,DHF will only develop in the patient?is that true?any experimental evidence to support that? hoping for a reply, thank you very much.
----------

you could catch both from being bitten by a female aedes aegypti mosquito. those terms were used to describe the stage in which the patient is in. DHF/dengue hemorrhagic fever means its getting worse. in dengue you watch for 2 things, initially we note a decrease in the platelet count, then there is a hemoconcentration later on as seen by elevated hematocrit levels. that is the time you worry over bleeding tendencies when both decrease in platelet and hemoconcentration are present.  (+ info)

Whats the difference between ross river fever and dengue fever?

the type of mosquito that spreads it

and Dengue fever is found mostly during and shortly after the rainy season in tropical and subtropical areas

Dengue fever can be caused by any one of four types of dengue virus: DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. You can be infected by at least two, if not all four types at different times during your lifetime, but only once by the same type.

I think i got bitten by a dengue mosquito?

An hour ago, while I was eating, i noticed there was a mosquito on my arm. It was black and white. The white are spots. Im not sure if i got bitten but after awhile it had a marking of a bite. But its not like normal mosquitoes because it doesnt itch.

So was i bitten?
And was the mosquito a dengue mosquito??
How would i know if i am infected?
----------

You can't tell which mosquito is infected just by looking at it. You will need to get tested by the doctor to know for sure.  (+ info)
