Is Clinical Depression the same as Major Depressive Disorder?

Hi how is everyone. I am 21 years old and for the last 5 or so months i have been treated for clinical depression with Fluoxetine(Prozac). The dose was recently upped to 40mg by my GP in Glasgow. My question is is Clinical Depression the same as Major Depressive Disorder?Or is it a different illness? Thank you for reading.
----------

My dear Linda,
May God bless you.
The clinical depression is same as major depression if the person feels isolated from the society and has very poor expression of his or her feelings.
In your case, it may be possible for the drug to work and relieve your depression, but in reality, when we change some of our obsessive thoughts to more practical thoughts and combine it with a good life style of work, exercise and nourishment along with proper rest and recreation, it works the best for our recovery. Depression is not a permanent disease that can never be improved or cured. Please remember this.

Would this cause an adolescent to develop major depressive disorder and severe social anxiety?

I was wondering, if both parents had the mental disorder that caused them to want the adolescent to be perfect.

Also, if the mother constantly accused the child of things the child did not do and stated she was jealous because the father purchased the child clothing for the child's birthday and christmas. Also, the mother had some sort of eating disorder with side effects of a bad mood.

Yet, the father was nice and had a very stable mood. Although the father was intimately distant, even when physically present.

Would that have any contribution to an adolescent developing major depressive disorder and severe social anxiety?
I think my parents have mental disorders, but they are probably related to drug abuse.

They grew up in the 70s and did random drugs.

Also, no one else in the family has any sort of mental disorder.
Well, I do not have risky behavior or bipolar (manic depression). I also am not trying to find someone to fill the father void.
In fact, I just think that both of my parents are wack jobs. That is why I am able to point out all of their problems.

They are quite possible more sane than most individuals. I just have OCPD and hold everyone to high standards.
I had a ton of friends growing up, so I did not have a lack of love. I just have a fear of not being perfect now.

That could certainly contribute. It really depends on the adolescent, though. Some people are just more resilient.  (+ info)

Do i suffer from Major Depressive Disorder?

Is this Major Depressive Disorder?
Hi guys. I am 21 years old. I had a 9 day spell in hospital earlier this year with a "moderate depressive episode".Ever since, for the last 5 or so months i have been treated with Fluoxetine 40mg for my depression. I haven't really asked my doctor much about the illness but is it Major Depressive Disorder?Considering i am being treated with Prozac? Thank you for your time and have a good day.
----------

I wouldn't think so. I am concerned though if that is all you are being treated with. There is great therapy that works even better than drugs for depression. Try and see a psychologist that does cognitive behaviour therapy. it is easy but best of all IT WORKS!!
all the best  (+ info)

I have bipolar disorder. Is there a way I can stop myself from becoming depressive?

I get very suicidal when I'm depressive and I have attempted suicide before. I realise now that people care about me and I need to try to get better. What can I do?
----------

i'm bipolar too. it made things a million times better when i went to a psychiatrist for medicine and then started therapy. also, come up with a plan for when you start to feel dangerous. like arrange with a person you can call at anytime. or go run. idk it'd haave to be your choice. i'm not going to say that is like a magic cure and life's life a normal person, but i am so much better then i ever thought. im like happy. so you can't stop from becoming depressive, but if you get help, you can greatly decrease the intensity and frequency of it.  (+ info)

Bipolar disorder: does manic or depressive phase occur first?

I was in my abnormal behaviour class and I asked the professor if it is known whether a person experiences a manic phase or a depressive phase first on the onset of bipolar disorder (i.e. a person is about to produce their first symptoms of having the disorder.. do they experience mania or depression first?).

Any knowledge would be appreciated. Best answer would be an informative one with credible links for support.
----------

I cannot provide links, all I can tell you is from my own experience, as myself and my father are both Bi-polar.
The most noticed phase is Depressive. These are generally what get taken in to psychologists to treat, first. Most people don't notice a person being Manic unless they see the Depression first. Also, some people have manic episodes that nearly mimic a depressive. I myself have extreme anger in my Manic phase. Let me explain why.
In Manic, a person has a sense that they are completely unique, always right, and capable of literally anything. Chronic gambling, illegal actions, and multiple sexual partners are all common signs of mania. Many people pass this off as being how that person is.
Depression on the other hand is the feeling that nothing you do is right, that everyone is against you, and possibly, that no one would care at all if you died. The effects of Depression are noticed more because they are considered more harmful to the person. For example, a person who "sleeps around" would be just a person with an unusually high libido, but someone who stays in bed for days and talks about how they always screw up, and possibly mention suicide would be immediately noticed. Especially if it's a new thing.

My personal opinion is that the Mania occurs first, long before the other symptoms of Manic-Depression are noticed. I can remember being manic as a child. Doing things because I knew I wouldn't get caught. I didn't really have an occurance of Depression until I reached puberty. As an adult, I recognize my thought patterns from before.  (+ info)

What is the difference between depressive mood and depressive disorder?

please state the url of the site or the title and author of the book. You can also give information about teen depression. thanks :))
----------

A "depressive mood" is not a medical term. It is one of many terms used to describe either a person who is depressed but not severely and not enough to qualify for a medical diagnosis (basically feeling down or "blue"). It can also simply identify that a person with depression, bipolar, or another condition is actually depressed. Meaning that a person with depression can be fine at times but when actually depressed they are in a "depressive mood."

Depressive disorder is also not a medical term. The actual diagnosis is major depressive disorder and there would be an indication of the severity, if this is a single episode, if it is a reoccurring problem, and if it involves psychosis. So it could read something like major depressive disorder, mild, single episode, without psychosis- that would be the technical diagnosis a doctor would give. It is an Axis I disorder.

I am in the medical field so it is sort of hard to source but one of the best places is the DSM-IV-TR.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
Fourth Edition (Text Revision)
From the American Psychiatric Association.

Also the web site:

This link is to The World Health Organization IDC-10 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems).

These are the two diagnostic manuals used by psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health disorders around the world.  (+ info)

How do you handle major depressive disorder in your life?

I have suffered from depression for over 10 years. Do not currently take medication; but have in the past. Don't wish to have to use meds.
I am a christian and want to be victorious over this disease with God's help.
Any opinions or words of advice appreciated!
----------

MAJOR DEPRESSION IS A CHEMICAL IMBALANCE OF THE BRAIN. YOU NEED MEDICATION TO CORRECT THE DISORDER, MOST LIKELY YOU YOU NEED TO CONTINUE TAKING THE MEDS TO REMAIN STABLE, AS MAJOR DEPRESSION IS ONGOING. THERE IS NO SHAME IN THAT, YOU NEED TO DO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE IN ORDER TO BE AND STAY WELL. PLEASE NOTE THAT DEPRESSION THAT GOES UNTREATED WILL MOST LIKELY LEAD TO AT SOME POINT SELF- MEDICATION (DRUG AND ALCOHOL ADDITION) A COMPLETE BREAKDOWN, A LIFE OF MISERY, AND/OR SUICIDE. YOU NEED TO SEEK TREATMENT THAT INCLUDES INTENSE THERAPY, ALONG WITH TAKING AND STAYING ON YOUR MEDS.
TRUST IN GOD, HE MADE YOU THE WAY YOU ARE FOR A REASON. HE ALSO MADE DOCTORS FOR A REASON. PLEASE TAKE THIS ADVISE FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN WHERE YOU ARE. I HAVE BEEN SUFFERING FROM REOCCURRING MAJOR DEPRESSION SINCE 1993. MY UN-MEDICATED LIFE WAS NOT PRETTY, BUT WITH GOD'S HELP, AND WITH THE AIDE OF MY MEDS AND YEARS OF INTENSE THERAPY. I NOW HAVE A WONDERFUL LIFE, FULL LIFE, EVEN THOUGH I AM LEGALLY DISABLED BE CAUSE OF MY DEPRESSION. GOD WANTS ALL OF US TO BE WELL AND HE GIVES WHAT US WE NEED TO GET AND STAY THAT WAY.PLEASE TAKE YOUR MEDS !  (+ info)

How long, typically, do cycles of mania last in manic depressive disorder?

I am planning on doing a project next quarter about manic depression, and find a lot more of the intimate details lacking.

Thanks!
----------

There is nothing in Bipolar Disorder that is typical! It is very, very person specific and you can not give a definition. However that is why there are different types of bp: 1 or 2.

BP1 is faster cycling than BP2, it means that cycles would be shorter. There are bp people that can be manic and depressed in matter of few hours. However, there are others (like me) that could be manic or hypomanic from 2 to 4 months!

I recomend you to check bipolar.about.com - it is easy to read and understand and it is a good introduction to bp. IT has all the different bp types, not only 1&2. Also is a lot of info on treatment and meds!

Hope it helps, but just keep in mind BP is a very subjective disorder!  (+ info)
