If heartbeats can only be listened through a stethoscope on the right side of the thorax, is that Dextrocardia?

A doctor checks for heartbeats on the left side of someone's thorax and doesn't found it, but he checks on his/her right side and finds it. Is that Dextrocardia?

Dextrocardia Situs Inversus refers to the heart being a mirror image situated on the right side instead of the left.  (+ info)

Are there any common psycological effects of dextrocardia like in personality?

Are people with dextrocadia similar in personality traits for example maybe more withdrawn, overly moody, or more sensitive

dextrocardia is an anomaly of the heart in other words it is in the wrong position.i did not find any of this as symptoms, although i would not dismiss these as symptoms.the human body has it's own language and if we do not listen,it may send other hints.and thank you for bringing this condition to my attention.i like being educated.  (+ info)

i have dextrocardia and have bee n having chest pains along with shortness of breath. what will my ecg say?

i am 24 years old and have been having chest problems for the past 5 years. Is it the dextrocardia that is causing it?
----------

wow, dextrocardia is very rare. i have only seen one or two cases in my career. you probably know this but it just means that your heart and great vessels are reversed. there is nothing specific to dextrocardia that would cause chest pain and shortness of breath. in other words, people with dextrocardia get chest pain and shortness of breath for the same reasons that any other person would.

your ecg will definitely be different from normal but if they reverse the leads ( i.e. put them on the right side of your chest) the ecg should look the same as normal.

good luck  (+ info)

Dextrocardia..... kindly give a brief explanation pls....?

Anyone knows about dextrocardia? is there any cure of this condition? what is the prognosis of this conditions? pls help... thank u in adv....
----------

Hi there,

dextrocardia is a condition in which the heart is situated on the right hand side of the body, rather than the left. Although this may sound serious, most of the time the condition is benign and patients do not experience and significant medical problems... in fact many people do not even realize they have it. There has been shown to be a correlation / increased risk of GI, cardiac, and respiratory abnormalities, so these are things you should keep an eye on (ie; make sure your physician knows of your condition). Lastly, patients with this condition need to be defribrillated in a different manner than those who have typical heart placement.

So in short, to answer your question:
There is no cure, however there is an excellent prognosis as we consider this a benign condition.  (+ info)

what does DEXTROCARDIA mean?

Not many people have this and I am one of them?
----------

The literal translation is heart on the right, it occurs in 2/10,000 live births, you would need to ask your GP do make the diagnosis. It is linked to other heart defects. The incidence of complete situs inversus is estimated as 1/8000, here the whole anatomy is a mirror image of normal.  (+ info)

dextrocardia and EKG's?

hello my name is Shawn and i am a NYS Advanced EMT. I recently had a call for a 41 male with dextrocardia, who called 911 for lightheaded and palpation s. Per our protocols we do a 12 lead EKG on all lightheaded persons. I did a right sided EKG, but my question is how to I interpret the EKG? This EKG had elevation in leads I and II with depressions in V4-V6
As this patient was asymptomatic I treated him as he presented.(ACLS protocols)
----------

Dextrocardia causes abnormalities in the limb leads similar to those caused by improper electrode attachment, but the pattern in the chest leads is also abnormal.
# Inverted P wave in lead I.
# No left ventricular complexes seen in leads V5, V6.
Please note that I am not a medical professional.  (+ info)

what is atrial fibrillation and is it serious?

I recently had an ecg done due to having chest pain and shortness of breath along with palpatations and the ecg showed atrial fibrillation. i have to go for further testing and my GP has put me on a daily dose of aspirin to prevent a stroke or heart attack. I also have dextrocardia. i am only 24 and i'm very worried about this. Can anyone help?
----------

AF is a failure of the normal controlling node (SA node) located in the posterior wall of the right atrium. Atrial fibrillation is by far the most commonly occurring cardiac arrhythmia. The rate heart control by the node is lost and the rate can rise dramatically.

It is unfortunately not a benign condition however there are a number of ways of dealing with it. You may remember Tony Blair had surgical management while he was Prime minister. This consists of destroying the aberrant conduction pathway, allowing the SA to take over control once more.

Patients can also be cardioverted, given a DC shock just as in when a defibrillator is used following a cardiac arrest.

Digoxin was used for many many years to control Af it fell out of fashion, but is still used by many cardiologists.

Another approach is to again ignore the abnormal rhythm and just control the rate, this is done using beta blockers.

The rapid irregular rhythm allows some blood to stagnate, increasing clot risk and stroke, for this reason patients are given at least anti-platelet therapy and more recently anti-coagulated with warfarin.  (+ info)

How common is situs inverses with dextrocardia?

I am 15, and i have situs inverses with dextrocardia, it means all of my organs are reversed. (Mirror image to a normal persons.)
I also have a lot of heart problems. My heart speeds up when I'm sleepy. When I was little I had seizures. Other then that it doesnt effect me. I did have to wear a heart moniter for a few months on 3 different occasions. I also had to have heart surgery. I sometimes have bad chest pain, but no doctors can tell me whats causing it. . .
How common is this?
----------

It is pretty rare. Though I have actually know two people to have it. One of them had a few complications but just had to live with it, the other was a gymnast and took martial arts and was in excellent shape. People with this are very capable of leading a normal life though there are complications a lot of times with having this, Doctors rarely know what to do and I wouldn't let them keep doing tests on me if I had it because they will never for now find out whats going on.  (+ info)

dextrocardia situs versus?

I have this and my Sister also is the same, If there's anyone like it or need to know more, I also wear a SOS chain about my neck to help in case any medical staff can see the information and get help Hugs Suzie
----------

Hi suziejun,

Dextrocardia means that the heart is situated on the right side of the body instead of the left. This happens during development in the womb. As the heart is forming it flips over to the other side.

Dextrocardia sitis inversus means that the heart is not only on the wrong side but back to front also. So it is like a mirror image of how the heart should be.

Often with this, the liver and spleen are affected also but that would have been investigated when you were diagnosed,

In itself dextrocardia causes no problems and you can live a perfectly normal life. You need to wear a medic alert so that if you needed to be taken to hospital in an emergency the staff would know to put ecg leads on backwards for example.

Hope this helps.
