Diabetic help: What should be the alternative way to do when metformin no more works?

I have been a diabetic for 10 years.
I used to take 1 tablet of metformin 500mg together with foods 3 times daily, and my glucose level were well controlled.
Recently my glucose level are high, reading 13 - 16 mmol 2 hrs after 2 tablets of metformin and foods.
Any add- on medicine for me, or herbs to recommend?
Thanks.

I am going to be the bearer of bad news here.

If your body is no longer responding to metformin, it is because you are becoming tolerant of the drug. You can ask your doctor to switch drugs or ask him for a higher dosage. Unfortunately, the medications will eventually not elicit a response and you will need insulin.

The other possibility is that your body has already regressed into type 1 diabetes. Again, this requires you to use insulin.

On the brighter side of the road, insulin has come a long way. Managing diabetes with insulin is much simpler than it used to be. There are fast acting insulins and insulins that work over 24 hour periods. Plus, technology has given us multiple delivery systems and the insulin pump has revolutionized life for diabetics.

The best medications are exercise and diet. Try to run or walk every day. Running can drop your glucose over 50 points in a matter of minutes.

As far as herbal supplements, the Apple Cider Vinegar works. Look for the organic or sediment loaded apple cider vinegar. Just take a teaspoon in water before your meals. Just be careful because it does make it go low in between meals. .  (+ info)

why is it not allowed for diabetic patients to take their diabetic pills before a cataract surgery?

why is it not allowed for diabetic patients to take their diabetic pills before a cataract surgery? what is the reason behind that?
thanks!
----------

They are guarding against anything that might cause an unsafe drop in blood sugar. I was allowed to take everything except for my insulin the morning of my vitrectomy surgeries. Even so, my sugar still dropped during one of my surgeries and they had to give me something.  (+ info)

Where can I find diabetic recipes?

I have a relative visiting soon who is on a diabetic diet. Does any know of any websites or sources for diabetic recipes? Thanks for your help.
----------

Having had diabetes myself for over forty years, I have found that there really aren't "diabetic" receipes. Diabetics eat the same food as anyone else, its only that the portions have to be managed. A balanced diet of carbs, proteins, vegs and fruits (The same that is recommended for everyone.) I think you will find that your guest will be happy if you just prepare your normal fare. We can even eat a small serving of regular dessert occaisionly. Hope this helps.  (+ info)

Any good diabetic recipes for Christmas goodies?

I usually make goodies baskets for everyone at Christmas. My Step-mom just found out she is diabetic. I still want to give them a basket, but I don't have any appropriate recipes. Any ideas? I usually make several cookies and candies.

Thanks!

What's the difference between diabetic and regular shoes?

Is there any difference between a diabetic show and a regular shoe besides the diabetic insert that goes into the shoe?
----------

Diabetic Shoes

Shoes for diabetic patients are made of special protective inserts and soft shoe materials to accommodate for conditions such as neuropathy (numb feet), poor circulation, and foot deformities (bunions, hammertoes, etc.). The shoes decrease the chance of foot sores (ulcers) which can be caused by friction and pressure. This may lead to infection, gangrene, or even amputation.

The foot and ankle surgeon may measure the diabetic patient's foot and have the shoes made at a specialty laboratory. In some cases he/she will give the patient a prescription to have the shoes custom-made.  (+ info)

How can a diabetic go about loosing weight? What does a diabetic have to do differently to get results?

It seems as though loosing wieght as a diabetic is more of a struggle, i'm not exactly sure why but i would like to know how one could loose weight being a diabetic?
----------

My dad's diabetic (Type II- used oral meds and insulin) and managed to lose 12 Kgs so far with my help.
I basically started him on the weight watcher programme. I made him spend him points on mostly long acting carbs (brown bread, brown rice) and lean protein (fish and skinless chicken) and eat lots of veggies. He enjoys 2 pieces of fruit a day (he likes oranges). His blood sugars are perfect, and his insulin requirement dropped a lot!

He still has more weight to lose and since the weather got better, we're pushing more exercise.

Good luck!!! It CAN be done.  (+ info)

How does the diabetic medication glimipiride work in the system?

New doctors have found out I was misdiagnosed with diabetes. There were problems with the glucose tolerance test. My doctor said I had hypoglycemia. He told me I needed to be treated with diabetic medication. What effect would the glimiperide have on my system? Did it make my pancreas increase my insulin levels, trying to lower my blood sugar levels ? However it worked, it really has my endocrine system all messed up. Does anyone know about this?
----------

Glimepride (Brand name: Amaryl) is a sulfonylurea. It causes the pancreas to release insulin and is longer acting than some other sulfonylureas. Side effects include the possibility of it causing hypoglycemia and weight gain. It's important for the doctor to monitor the patient's liver functions on a regular basis, because the liver is involved with getting rid of ther drug in the system.  (+ info)

What could happen if you take diabetic medicine and you are not a diabetic?

pharmacy filled metformin but am not a diabetic
thought it was a blood pressure medicine. Pharmacy fill metformin by mistake. Took it for two weeks until went to Dr. and he said to stop taking it.
----------

I find it hard to believe a pharmacist can mix up a BP medication with a diabetic medication - was he/she new to the job? If so their orders should have been checked by someone else.
If you take diabetic medication, your body will utilise (burn) more sugar and this means your organs are not getting the glucose (sugar) they need. In rare cases, people can go into a coma and die. All diabetic medications (including Insulin) work in different ways as well.
There is no such thing as 'reverse diabetes' - I don't know who coined that term. If you have had no side effects, and your Dr feels you are OK, I wouldn't worry too much.
Did you get your BP checked?
Always check your medications with the pharmacist before taking them home - I do and I am a nurse! (I have been given wrong doses of medication by pharmacists & this is just as dangerous).  (+ info)
