Can a gap between the teeth cause speech problems?

I'm a gap in my teeth, about 5 mm, and i also have other gaps in my lower teeth. I've alwasy noticed that when i pronounce some words they don't sound right, like s or f words, and a lot of other words in general and i sometimes seem to spit a little too, and i've always believed it's because of the upper gap. Sometimes it also sounds like i have a lisp when i talk. Could it really be the gap that's causing these problems? I'm looking into getting braces right now and I am going to see a speech therapist in the future to help with speech in general, but i'm wondering if my theory of the gap causing some of my problems could be right. This gives me an even bigger reason to get braces, apart from my self-esteem. Anyone with a gap (diastema) ever had speech problems?

Should I get braces or dental surgery?

I have diastema between my front two teeth and between my incisors and canines. Should I see an orthodontist, or cosmetic dental surgeon to close the space and have a normal smile?

I'd see both and compare the approaches. In general its better to have braces because they best preserve your natural teeth.

With veneers, the tooth is shaved, and many people end up having root canals on the teeth with veneers. The veneers are not permanent, they will need replacing.

With braces, as long as you wear the retainer afterwards you are set for life.  (+ info)

What's the price of Diastema Closure? Is it painfull?

I was wondering if diastema closure was painful and what's the cost of it?
How do they actually get rid of the space..do they move the teeth or use vaneers ( or something similiar)?
Thanks.

I do this all of the time in my office. I usually use a treatment called bonding. We just add a little of the bonding material on each tooth and close the space. I match the color of the bonding with the color of your teeth so that it looks totally natural. You don't need anesthetic since there is no pain and I do not drill on the tooth. I charge between 400.00 and 600.00. The other good thing about bonding is if done correctly, it can be reversible.  (+ info)
