How can you tell the difference between GERD/acid reflux symptoms and a problem with the aorta?

I've had sharp, stabbing pains in the upper stomach area (and a multitude of other symptoms) for a few months now and they seem to be getting worse. How can I differentiate between GERD or acid reflux type symptoms, and something like aortic stenosis or an aortic dissection.
----------

I'm not sure but if you find out let me know :) I have had a constant full feeling in my upper stomach over the last few days and its doing my head in. I haven't got much of an appetite but feel full, had a dodgy stomach a week ago. I went to my gp and he has given me some Merbentyl as he said it should settle things down and he thought it was just a bug that i have but i'm not convinced.  (+ info)

What are the sympthoms of infants reflux?

I suspect my baby to have reflux. She is suffering already from terrible colic and gas but i think that also she might have reflux. She is not sleeping for sometimes 15-20 hours . She is trying to sleep but waking up after a minute. When she finally fall a sleep i can see she is strugelling. Something is bothering her. I have impression that milk she drunk is comming back to throat and she is swallowing it again. Is it possible?

Another poster was right on: the very best of parenting tools we mom's have is our gut! You think something is wrong /w her...off to pediatrician!

Only symptom ever shared with me was by NICU nurse, "See how he's sticking his tongue out repeatedly? Likely, he'll have reflux or gerd." Never happened. But....wanted to help, so:

Googling revealed several informative sites with a few suggestions: add a bit of rice cereal to formula; smaller meals but more often; hold (or place) baby in a more upright position for 30 minutes after feeding; NONE OF THESE SITES RECOMMENDED putting baby onto tummy...not one. (My babies always slept on tummies...but, then...we didn't know then what we know now...they're 21 & 24...that "NICU" comment was relative to grandson)

BEST? Your Mommy Knowledge + your pediatrician's medical degree! You don't say how old she is, but if she's sometimes only sleeping 4 out of 24 hours, something is truly going on!!

Good luck to what must be two very tired gurlies!  (+ info)

How to treat gastroesophageal reflux in infants?

My baby is 4 weeks old and has reflux. We tried giving Zantac as per his Pediatrician's prescription but it had some side effects. Is there any natural way of curing this condition, apart from upright positioning and thickened feeding?
----------

There are other meds, like Reglan & prevacid that are also used in infants, but obviously require a Rx. You can talk to your Dr about thickening your baby's feeds. Enfamil even has a formula with "AR" for acid reflux behind the name (this too, requires a Rx). Don't lay baby down right after feeding. When you do lay them down, lay them on their right side with head elevated (not flat) to promote the stomach to empty faster. You may even try sitting baby up in your lap, somewhat with one hand supporting his neck & the other feeding baby. After a feeding, sit baby in a swing or bouncy chair (w/o vibration) to keep them upright or just hold them for at least 30 minutes afterwards. also, burp baby frequently, more frequently than you would a baby without reflux.

How can I get rid of the burn in my throat after having acid reflux?

I take medicine for acid reflux, but still occasionally get it at night. After it happens, my throat and esophogus burn terribly for 1/2 hour or so, from the acid, I presume. Have tried chewing antacid tablets to try to neutralize what is left in my throat, as well as soda crackers, to no avail. I know this is gross, but also very painful. Any remedies for the after effects of acid reflux would be appreciated. Thank you.

I hate it when that happens. you could try pickles. the vinegar should help neutralize the acid  (+ info)

What are the chances of throat cancer if one has acid reflux?

i've had acid reflux about half year ago, i just started having it out of nowhere. it's really annoying because your voice sometimes get lower in pitch and huskier because the acid "scotch" your voicebox. now im thinking it may cause cancer and i want to know more about it, thx.
----------

Acids backing up into your esophagus has been proven to raise the risk of throat cancer because the constant irritation changes your cells. They even have a new procedure to zap the precancerous cells and lower that cancer risk.  (+ info)

How effective is the use of apple cider vinegar in acid reflux?

I have a friend who has acid reflux and I am wondering about methods of helping her without rx drugs or zantac. How effective is apple cider vinegar in the treatment of acid relux and are there other things out there that would help? Thank you
----------

Apparently the most common natural remedy. 2Tsp Apple Cider Vinegar in water 3 times a day.
See URL Link www.earthclinic.com/CURES/acid_reflus.html
6 small meals a day vs 3 large
Do not lie down with a full stomach
Prop at least 3 pillows in bed for your head, so acid, food does not reflux back up the esophagus
Stay away from greasy, fatty foods, citrus, caffeine...irritants  (+ info)

What are good foods for picky teens to eat with acid reflux?

I have acid reflux and I am a very pickey eatter and my mom doesnt know what to cook for me. I love milk products but they make me sick and I also LOVE spicy foods but they give me really bad stomaches and heartburn! Any suggestion?
----------

I am also a teen with acid reflux and lactose intolerance so I feel for you. Here are some of my favorite foods that I eat a lot.

Pretzels (Favorite: Pretzel Goldfish)
Granola Bars (Quaker Chewy Bars)
Apples
Bananas
Peanut Butter
Almonds
Ice Pops / sorbet

Even if you haven't been diagnosed with lactose intolerance try taking a lactaid pill (no prescription required) right as you start to eat dairy, it might help. Also if you are going to treat yourself to spicy food the best medicine after the fact for bad heartburn, I have found is Zantac  (+ info)
