What are some good foods to eat or beverages to drink when you have acid reflux?

I am currently taking an acid reflux medication for the next 6 weeks. However, I am curious if there are any beneficial foods that will also help? My throat is closing up a lot lately, and although I have eliminated my caffeine intake, it is still bothering me.
----------

the problem with reflux is putting anything in your stomach will cause it to worsen. Suggest you be careful about eating smaller amounts more frequently, remain sitting upright for at least thirty minutes after eating or drinking, no flopping on the couch with snacks, or eating just before bed. Make gravity your friend. Before bed take some maalox to coat your esophagus.  (+ info)

How do I know if my daughter has infant reflux?

My daughter is 6 weeks old. She is always crying. I believe she has infant reflux and I think she is really herding from it. The symptoms that she has is she eats just for eating, spits up, she is fussy, gets a lot of hiccups and makes a lot of saliva like if she was teething. She is always unhappy no matter what I do. What do you think? Please help!
----------

ok my son had reflux when he was 2 weeks old. those are not the signs. the signs are projectile vomiting and slow weight gain. you need to get tests done to find out for sure,my son had 3 done. its impossible in just one doctors visit. yes the doctor will prescribe you something the first day just because now days thats what they do to make the parents feel like they are doing something, instead of trying to figure out whats really going on. but you should, ask for the tests to be done at your local children's hospital. my son was put on previcid he grew out of his reflux when he was 2 1/2 yrs old. oh and he was 5 weeks early, its mostly common in babies who were premature. there could be long term side affects with anti acid meds, so check that out too. that is why your baby should get tested to make sure before she is put on meds.

are you breastfeeding?
so i just had my daughter one month ago, and she was the same way, still kind of is. fussy, gassy, spit up alot, and hiccups. so i was looking around on the internet and found this website.

http://www.llli.org/FAQ/oversupply.html

but it for if you are breastfeeding, this could be the problem, it was for me, and it helped. sometimes she still has these symptoms but they are getting drastically better.

so i hope this helps..... it hard to figure out what wrong.  (+ info)

What to do if you experience acid reflux?

I woke up one day and my throat burned like crazy and i learned that it was acid reflux caused from eating too late and acid from your stomach seeping into your throat. I wanted to know what to do to help this because naturally ive just been drinking juice or water and eating lots of fruits to soothe it. Also, ive been experiencing a lot of coughing and wanted to know is this normal and what to do to prevent and help acid reflux.
----------

1. Fruits and juice will make it worse because they have acid in them.
2. To help acid reflux don't eat before bed and sleep with your head slightly propped.
3. Antacids should help, I find mylanta is very helpful.  (+ info)

What Effect Does Stress Have On Acid Reflux?

I've been under tremendous stress lately and my acid reflux has gone out of control. Not getting much sleep either, some nights none. Is there a connection between reflux and stress/worry/fatigue?
----------

How long have you had acid reflux? Any and all of the reasons you give are all causes in and by themselves let alone in combination. There needs to be something you can do to release this pressure. What these things do are create a very high temperature cooker in the stomach area and turn it up even higher. You need to find a group activity in the neighborhood. Maybe a dancing or whatever type of thing you like. Just get up and move, leaving the obstacle causing these feelings behind until you can learn to control them. Sleeping is one of the most important things the body needs too. Your brain needs to rest to get ready to help lead the body for another day. Please try to look up some of the "natural ways" that you can do to get your body to sleep at night. This info is but a search away on your computer. Using what life has to offer us instead of any chemical or artificial ways are always best and you'll see you only have to look around the house for most ingredients. Good luck and God Bless  (+ info)

How long does it take for acid reflux to go away?

I started suffering from the symptoms of acid reflux the week after Thanksgiving. On December 21, I went to a doctor and he gave me Prevacid. I've been taking that since then. I started feeling much better about a week after I started taking the medication, but my symptoms are not all the way gone. Sometimes I still feel like I have a lump at the back of my throat and I have to burp a lot. Occasionally I'm slightly nauseous. How long does it typically take to recover from acid reflux, or do you recover at all? And when I run out of medication, should I be fine by then or will I need more? I have enough for about a month and a half. I do plan on going back for a check up at the end of this month as well, as my doctor asked me to.
----------

I hope your doctor suggested diet changes as well as medication. Avoid anything spicy, deep fried, caffeine, chocolate, peppermint, orange juice, pineapple juice, and tomato sauces. Also try eating smaller meals so you don't distend or stretch your stomach out too much at one time. Don't lay down right after eating and try sleeping with your upper body slightly elevated. If you smoke, quit and avoid alcohol.
In regard to the Prevacid some people take it for many years. You can be on the medication for long term therapy. Generally four to six weeks are needed to have the full effect of the medication. At your follow up if your symptoms are not completely resolved ask about increasing the dosing or frequency of the Prevacid and possibly a referral to a GI or gastroenterologist.  (+ info)

How to prevent stomach reflux after meals ?

The refluxes (not belching) occur almost immediately after meals. The undigested stomach material some times reaches mouth. Rarely, it causes heart burn too. Is it because of over-eating or eating solids with some liquid food or water ? However, if belching occurs in stead of reflux, it provides relief as it reduces stomach fullness.
----------

You may want to look into your diet and try to see what could be causing the issue. For example in my case, I'll get reflux after eating dairy products since I'm lactose intolerant. Since I am unable to properly digest milk products without a battle, I'll start getting gassy and I'll reflux.

So what you might want to do is to try to take note of what you are eating. Try to identify all the things that you normally eat that cause this and try eliminating it. For example, try eliminating milk products. If you still have a problem, put the milk back and try lower acidic foods, then try cutting out spices and so on and so forth until you find something that when eliminated...the reflux goes away.

If you can't figure it out on your own, see a doctor and see if he can help you sort it out. He might even be able to prescribe something that can reduce or stop the reflux problem. He might even consider sending you to an allergist and/or a nutritionist to see if they can pin-point it further for you.  (+ info)

How long does acid Reflux last with an infant?

My daughter has acid reflux and wont keep her food down. She spits evrything up and the only way I have found to feed her is to keep her sitting up and feeding her. She has not spit anything up so far.
----------

My twins had the same problem when they were born. We were told by our pediatrician to keep them sitting up as long as possible after feeding them, to make sure that they burp really, really well and at night when they go to sleep (hah!), keep them at a 30 degree tilt to help keep the milk down. It took them a couple months to grow out of it - and before they did they spit up constantly, sometimes projectile as I lifted them out of nursing position. But they grew!

Our friends son did the same time, but he kept spitting up until the took him off formula (he couldn't nurse) and put him on homo milk - then he finally stopped and that was around 10 months old!

It all depends on the baby, but they will still grow, even though you think how can they when no food is down! But soon they will grow out of it and be in school and talking back - enjoy the infant stage while you can!  (+ info)

What is the best way to reduce spit up in 2 month old baby with acid reflux?

No matter how many burps she has, my daughter is still spitting up a lot after some feeds. Pediatrician diagnosed acid reflux and said to keep her upright. It seems to bother her, especially the really big ones. Any tips appreciated.
sorry, I meant to mention she is stricty breastfed.
----------

Tell her Pediatrician again, you may need to switch formula's. My friend is currently going through the same thing with her 2 week old.

Just keep switching formula's until you can find one that she can handle. Also, try reducing how much she takes in before you burp her. Maybe cut back a few ounces then burp her, give her a few more, burp her.... you get the drift.

I had the same problem when I was a baby (back in '81 lol) and my mom had to keep switching and keep switching and keep switching. Nothing worked. Finally an old lady told her that she might could switch to goats milk and it'd clear it up.

Sure enough, I was raised from 2 months old until I was off the bottle on goats milk. The only down side (my mom story lol) is when I got hot, I smelled like a goat LOL.

But ask around (I know that's what you're here for lol). Ask other moms you know and keep telling her doctor what's going on.

Just stay ontop of it, it sounds like you're doing a wonderful job as it is. Good luck!

Okay so I just read your additional info. I don't know what to tell you about breast milk. Try what the lady said above, pump the milk then add that.. stuff to it. Or you just may have to switch to formula. I know breast milk is healthier but it's healthir for your baby not to spit up everything she's just eaten.  (+ info)

What bottle is best for a breastfed baby that have reflux?

I've tried the Gerber NUk but it's not a good bottle because it make my daughter spit up even more because of the bottle lets air in. And it also gives her hiccup. So someone please help me"!!! what is the best bottle for a breastfed baby that have reflux?
----------

I use avent bottles for my little man. He too had reflux really bad and in the end the Dr put him on a reflux medication called Losec. This helped him alot!!! He was a different child overnight. The medication was hard to come by as there needs to be a "compounding" pharmacist in your area to make this medicine. Basically what they do is get the Losec tablets and do whatever they do to get it to a liquid form medicine that is down to baby strength. Might be worthwhile speaking to your Dr.

See the Dr and see if you can persevere with Breastfeeding if it is going fine other than reflux. I had a friend who Breastfed and her daughter had the same medication.

Also you could try and express off your foremilk and give bub the hindmilk only, this also helped one of my friends. The foremilk is the first bit of watery milk they get and the hindmilk is the second part that is more substantial and more filling for the baby.

Good Luck!!!  (+ info)

What is the best way to naturally cure heartburn (acid reflux)?

I am beginning to think that I have acid reflux disease. I have been experiencing some severe heartburn of late and would like to find a solution. Preferably natural cures for heartburn or heartburn home remedies that work. I prefer the home remedy approach as it usually is safer and less expensive. Looking forward to your help.
----------

I actually had some very severe heartburn a few months back. I tried everything, even most of the heartburn home remedies listed above. Cinnamon and water did not work. Baking soda didnt work. I even tried the can of beer, which made my heartburn even worse. I actually thought I was doomed and destined to never cure heartburn and live with it forever. My doctor had even told me that acid reflux is a lifetime condition and that there was no cure. I randomly came across and ad one day while trying to find some acid reflux home remedies online and came across this book, Heartburn No More. This book took the holistic approach and sounded very appealing. I had nothing to lose so I bought the book and followed the program to the tee. I was really blown away by the fact that in approx 20 days since I started applying the dietary and cleansing principals outlined in the book, my acid reflux was completely cured. The burning sensation, the chest pain, the bloating and the constant burping have completely disappeared. It really feels like magic. Im telling you, try Heartburn No More, you wont be disappointed.  (+ info)
