what is the difference between dystonia, tremor, and parkinson's disease?

since those three are world's most common movement disorder, what makes them different from each other? plz, need answer ASAP. best answer gets 10. its for general knowledge.:D
----------

Dystonia is one of the dyskinesias which are characterized by uncontrolled involuntary movements and diminished voluntary movements. Dystonia is can be a separate condition or part of another disease or syndrome.

I actually like the Wikipedia description: "Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder in which sustained muscle contractions cause twisting and repetitive movements or abnormal postures.
The disorder may be hereditary or caused by other factors such as birth-related or other physical trauma, infection, poisoning (e.g., lead poisoning) or reaction to drugs, particularly neuroleptics" or dystonia can be a side effect caused by the decreased supply of levodopa in the system or part of the "wearing off" as seen in Parkinson's disease. Dystonia often involves the body or head. The movement is often large, sweeping and very disruptive.

Tremors are rhythmic involuntary muscle movements which are not intentional. The tremor can fall into several types. There is a series of tremors known as essential tremor which can fall into several categories. Essential tremor can be a resting tremor or an intentional or action tremor which occurs when a person initiates an action. There are several more types of Essential Tremor. Tremors can involve any part of the body including the voice but commonly involve the limbs, especially the hands. The movements are smaller movements, more rhythmic than dystonia. Tremors can be symptoms of a condition, early warning signs, temporary, or a specific tremor disorder. In conditions other than S, tremors often appear bilaterally.

Parkinson's disease is classified as a neurodegenerative disorder. Although symptoms vary from patient to patient, tremor is one very common and easily recognizable symptom. In PD tremor usually begins on one side of the body, often in the hand and progressing to the leg and foot on the same side. As the disease progresses, the same symptoms appear on the other side of the body. Dystonia or Dyskinesia actually often occurs when levodopa wears off. It is often such symptoms as dystonias and extreme tremor which cause people to seek a surgical solution through DBS.

There are many other symptoms of PD. Slower movements, stooped shuffling gait, balance issues, stiffness, pain, swallowing problems, cognition problems, sleeping disorders, PD depression, hallucinations, freezing, vision problems, loss of sense of smell, constipation, urinary problems and ED are just some of the most common.

The Woman who got Dystonia from the Swine Flu Vaccine?

That is so fake, it's ridiculous.
----------

1. she got the seasonal flu shot not the H1N1 shot.

2. No medical or health expert has verified that her condition is in any way related to the flu shot.

3. Some physicians believe she is not suffering from actual Dystonia but rather a psychogenic form of the condition, i.e. a psychological disorder. (Psychogenic seizures are 3 times more common in women).

4. Although, no medical professional has made the claim that it was caused by the flu shot, the reporter of the initial story clearly wanted to sensationalize the story and plays with the language while avoiding liability.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGT0r-udstQ

"Doctors say she has a medical condition called dystonia that was triggered 10 days after she got a flu shot."

No mention as to whether the dystonia might be psychogenic, as many doctors claim.

No mention of what actually triggered the condition just that it happen 10 days after she got the flu shot.

He could have just as easily said it was triggered 10 days after she ate ice cream.

It's tragic but there's just no evidence that the flu shot had anything to do with it.

More and more even the press is saying "She believes" it was caused by the vaccine. Because there's no medical evidence that it was.

Can children get oromandibular dystonia?

I think it's a disease where your facial muscles twitch abnormally...i was just wondering...
----------

Generally oromandibular dystonia happens only in Adultsm but childeren can alos get it in rare cases.

In dystonia, muscles contract involuntarily — causing an uncontrollable twisting of the affected body part. Symptoms can be mild or severe, and often interfere with the performance of many day-to-day tasks.

Doctors divide dystonia into two broad categories, depending on the age of onset. If your symptoms begin in your youth, you could have a type of dystonia that's inherited and the symptoms may eventually affect the entire body.

Most cases of dystonia, however, occur in older individuals and tend to affect only one body part — often the neck, face or hand.

Dystonia is an uncommon disorder. The highest estimates place the proportion of people affected at less than 1 percent. Women seem to be more likely to develop dystonia than men are.   (+ info)

What causes Dystonia ???

Are there any natural remedies that might help this condition ?
----------

The cause(s) of dystonia are not yet known or understood; however, they are categorized as follows on a theoretical basis:

Primary dystonia is suspected to be caused by a pathology of the central nervous system, likely originating in those parts of the brain concerned with motor function, such as the basal ganglia, and the GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) producing Purkinje neurons. The precise cause of primary dystonia is unknown. In many cases it may involve some genetic predisposition towards the disorder combined with environmental conditions.

Secondary dystonia refers to dystonia brought on by some identified cause, usually involving brain damage, or by some unidentified cause such as chemical imbalance. Some cases of (particularly focal) dystonia are brought on after trauma, are induced by certain drugs (tardive dystonia), or may be the result of diseases of the nervous system such as Wilson's disease.  (+ info)

Hi Linda,

I have a dystonia reaction to Compazine, a medication that is given for nausea. I was given Benedryl to counteract the dystonia reaction. That is the only experience I have had. I live in the USA.

I know of no cure, but it might be worth your while to see whether some other medication might be used instead of the one(s) that caused your problem.

Is there help for Cervical Dystonia?

I have had muscle knots on one shoulder since I was a teen. After whiplash last June I now have 2 bulging discs C3 and C4. Since then Cervical Dystonia that now moves throughout my body. My muscles all over spasm visibly and under the skin, with occasional rapid muscle jerks and twitching. I have done PT ( which gave me under the shoulder tendinitis), Steroid Injections, Anti-Inflammatory drugs, Nutritional Supplements, and Prescription Pain Medication. I do ice packs, heating pads and topical analgesics. I have also been going to the Chiropractor since January. All with only temporary relief. Has anyone been through this or know how to help?
----------

yes i have it where my muscles knot up near the base of my skull, which pulls my c1 against my brainstem,=severe dizziness and pain. go to youtube and type in dystonia, the 1st video that pops up, click on it, and they are a very big help, go to their website, 4 the certified dystonia doctor list, and find the nearest 1 to you. i've had chiro adjustments at least 1,500 times in the last 10 years, going 4 botox and other treatment this october in st louis at barns hospitol dystonia specialist. i have been to many many doctors for it, do not mess around with other doctors who doesn't specialize it! if there is living hell on earth i have been there, and wish noone else to go through what i have been through, and still going through. hopefully my october appointment will change my life! you do not have to live with this, there are a few procedures they can do, but they will probablly start you off on botox, but be sure they inject the exact knotted up muscles, and no other muscles! i been botoxed 3 times, and they have not listened 2 me on which little knotted up muscle to do, and they missed it everytime, very upsetting to me. do not let them put it in any other spots besides the knotted up or dystoniated muscles!!! otherwise other muscles near there will relax, and not let you heal correctlly!!!!, the exact spot and that is it! or you will be disappointed like me. my october appointment, i will demand them to inject the proper muscle this time, and not anywhere around it! you just want the exact muscle relaxed, and no other! even if they want to inject the other side of your neck, or toward your shoulders, do not let them do that! exact spasmed knot, and no where else 4 your sake in healing! get 10mg valium! and when you feel spasms coming on take 1! huge help to me, as i can relax enough to adjust my c1 myself. when my neck is spasmed even the chiro cannot adjust it. im not a drinker, but if its spasmed alot of times ill drink a couple cups of beer, and it will relax enough 4 me to adjust my c1 away from my brainstem, and it is night and day difference of how i feel. send me your email, and i will send you my story i wrote to the doctor about my fight with dystonia! soon as your cervical dystonia, is gone, your back will straighten up, and your body will heal itself, and i recommend visiting a good chiro that doesnt use an activator to adjust u. keep seeing him, to train your muscles that have been, in the wrong spot, to train them where everything should be. stay away from caffeen, cholcate, and notice whatever knotts up your neck. write me and i will talk to you about it. soon as i heal, im doing the talk show circuit about dystonia, to get the word out and help others.  (+ info)
