How long could swelling last with hsv encephalitis?

We recently had a prognosis of hsv encephalitis. Still hospitalized and on day 14 of Acyclovior, clinically showing improvment. We have had several MRIs and EEG, seems like the EEGs are getting somewhat better, but the MRI still shows no change. How long could we expect swelling to remain?
----------

There is no answer.
every case is entirely indiviual.
I've seen one case where the patient was copmpletely better in a week. And other cases where the person never came out of a coma.

I have one case in the hospital right now - it's been one week, and no useful movement.

Best advice - wait one month - expect that by one month you'll have about 90% of the recovery that will ever occur.

It's just a waiting game - there is no way for anyone to tell you when the patient is going to get better - or IF he's going to get better.  (+ info)

How many doses of Japanese encephalitis vaccine should I have?

I am going to India in a few weeks time and was told I will need immunising against japanese encephalitis. I have had two doses of the vaccine and have an appointment tomorrow for the 3rd dose, but I was wondering if it is really worth having the 3rd dose? Is it safe to just have two doses? As I heard somewhere that 2 doses gives you about 80% protection and that 3 doses doesn't even give 100 % protection anyway.

Thanks

http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/yellowBookCh4-JapaneseEncephalitis.aspx

Please refer to above web site for details

The best schedule is 3 doses of 1 ml of vaccine on days 0,7, and 30
Another wschedule is 0,7,14

But the minimum possible is
1st dose= day 0
The next dose should be at least 10 days before travel , but 7 days after the first making a 2 dose schedule'

What common drugs currently used to treat Encephalitis?

Also is it a vaccine? what other info are scientists useing to fight Encephalitis?
----------

For herpes simplex encephalitis, acyclovir is used. For most other viruses, specific treatment is not available. General measures include anticonvulsants, antipyretics, looking after nutrition and hydration, preventing bed sores, etc.  (+ info)

Are all the poeple infected with herpes died of Encephalitis?

Are we all people infected with herpes, are going to die of Encephalitis?

Thank you.
----------

Nope. Your immune system gets better at suppressing the virus the longer you have it. Unless your immune system is incredibly weak (like if you have both AIDS and herpes) or you get a raging case of herpes in your old age, it's not worth worrying about.  (+ info)

What type of epilepsy can result from encephalitis?

Since epileptic seizures can result from different areas of the brain, I was wondering which areas (maybe all?) were more prone to developing epilepsy as a result of encephalitis...I was particularly wondering if encephalitis could affect the temperal lobe.......thanks
----------

I'm sorry I can't answer your question, but I have a related question. In addition to epilepsy, I have arrested hydrocephalus. I was wondering if they could be related. Maybe an answer to my question will give you an insight into yours.

can you get encephalitis from a mosquito who has bitten someone with herpes?

because herpes and encephalitis are caused by the same virus. and you get encephalitis from mosquitoes. so, if a mosquito bit a person with genital herpes, then bit someone else, could they transfer the virus and give the second person encephalitis?
----------

No. Not related. Encephalitis attacks the brain. Causes coma, high fever and could cause death. There has been no documented transfer of herpes via mosquito. Had a nephew who contracted Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)and we learned a lot about that and other diseases transmitted by bugs. Herpes also has to be in a contagious state , for the most part, to contract that disease. If in doubt, contact the hospital, free clinic or CDC. They all have web pages to answer this type of question. Tagger  (+ info)

How does California State disability work with having a premature baby?

I was put on bed rest and just started collecting Short term disability from the state of California. I had my daughter 6 weeks early. How does that affect my disability pay? Do I still only get 6 weeks? What other options do I have?
----------

You would need to ask the dep't of SS about that. I imagine u can only get the disability payments whlst u are covered under a medical certificate. If u r an unemployed single parent then maybe u can get payments for that. good luck.  (+ info)

Does the state of California help you out if you adopt kids or become a foster parent? If so in what ways?

I am planning to adopt or become a foster parent.....I like kids and want at least two. My question is If i become a foster parent is there any help from the government to me? I live in the state of California and I am a single man.
----------

Here are two websites that'll answer your questions:
http://www.childsworld.ca.gov/FosterPare_350.htm
http://www.kinshipcenter.org/

From the first website
A license is required to operate a foster home. The process requires a licensing worker to visit your home and meet with you and other family members. Minimum personal, safety and space requirements are required by law. Foster parents work with social services staff to determine the type of child best suited for their home

Foster parents receive a monthly payment to feed, clothe and meet the material needs of the children placed in their care.
Medical and dental coverage is provided through the Medi-Cal program.  (+ info)

How do I find a good Ophthalmologist in Southern California? How about California?

I wore contact lens for couple of years back in around 2001. After that when I sleep, sometimes I wake up due to pain in my eye, when my eye ball move(probably from rem sleep) and feels like inside of my eye lid is stuck to my eye ball. I immediately get lots of discharge from my eye. After a while(maybe 10 minutes), pain goes away and discharge stops and feel normal and I go back to sleep. I haven't worn contact lens for about 4 years because of it but seems this symptom persists. I only have this problem when I sleep. Sometimes my eyes are very sensative to light as well. How do I find a good Ophthalmologist to treat this symptom? Anywhere in Southern California(LA, OC, riverside, Sanbernardino). Thanks.

Is it against the law in California to sell human breast milk?

I need to know if there are any laws prohibiting the sale of human breast milk in California. I know there are many conflicting opinions on this subject, but I'm not asking for anyone's thoughts or opinions. I would just like an answer to my question. Only serious & informed responses please. And please list any sources/references. Thank you.
Milk banks only take donations. I donated to one when I had my last baby, but this time I really need the money and I know alot of people do sell their milk online. I just wanted to know if there were any laws against it.

*Bloom B - Maybe you should've tried reading my question a little more thoroughly before responding.
----------

"Right now, only California and New York have restrictions against selling breast milk. But other states are considering legislation to ban the practice." Quote from, http://jscms.jrn.columbia.edu/cns/2007-04-10/levenson-breastmilkfetish According to this, it sounds like it is illegal to sell your breast milk in California.

And why do some of you find it disgusting? Is cow milk better? Or formula made in factories? Let's not forget about Chinese formula that killed and made ill many, many babies. Human milk banks offer a wonderful and potentially life saving service to babies that are for some reason unable to receive breast milk from their mothers. Google it and educate yourselves before passing judgment.  (+ info)
