What is the treatment for West Nile Encephalitis?

Are there any drugs to treat this disease or at least ease its symptoms? (Ex. intensive medical therapy or anitviral drugs)

Also is this severe disease a bioterrorist threat? Can it possible be used/seen in warfare, just like how anthrax was once used in warfare?
----------

There are no antiviral drugs against West Nile Encephalitis. The only treatment is anti-inflammatories. These do nothing against the virus, but suppress the inflammation. What usually kills you is when the virus gets into your brain and the immune system over-reacts.

It wouldn't be easy to use for bio-terrorism. Most of the time people are infected with the virus, there immune system handles it with nothing more then flu like symptoms. For every person who develops encephalitis there are probably several people who are infected with the virus who don't notice. The virus cannot spread from human to human, and cannot be inhaled. (Although I suspect a little genetic tweaking could make it really scary).

The disease would probably be relatively easy to develop a vaccine against, if it ever became common enough to be worth the effort. (It is closely related to yellow fever, which we have a vaccine against).

Yellow fever or malaria would be easier to weaponize.  (+ info)

Does anyone have any information on Japanese B Encephalitis?

My father was infected in Vietnam during the war. The extensiveness of his infection led to coma and I believe long term problems emotionally and physically. I am looking for info re: long term prognosis and if there have been any ramifications on the children of those infected.

How many days pass between the time a person is bitten by a mosquito with encephalitis and the time symptoms?

appear in the person?
----------

As with any disease, there is a range. For West Nile, symptoms show up 3-14 days after infection. Japanese Excephalitis (JE) shows up 5-15 days after infection. St. Louis encephalitis is about the same as JE. In general, it showes up between a few days and 2 weeks of being bitten.  (+ info)

How is encephalitis usually treated, and does treatment usually prevent significant damage?

Antiviral medications may be used if a virus is involved. Antibiotics are prescribed for bacterial infections.
Some cases are mild, short and relatively benign and patients have full recovery. Other cases are severe, and permanent impairment or death is possible. The acute phase of encephalitis may last for one to two weeks, with gradual or sudden resolution of fever and neurological symptoms. Neurological symptoms may require many months before full recovery. Prognosis for people with viral meningitis is usually good.

With early diagnosis and prompt treatment, most patients recover from meningitis. However, in some cases, the disease progresses so rapidly that death occurs during the first 48 hours, despite early treatment. Permanent neurological impairments including memory, speech, vision, hearing, muscle control, and sensation difficulties can occur in people who survive severe cases of meningitis and encephalitis.

The prognosis for appropriately treated meningitis has improved, but there is still a 5% mortality rate and significant morbidity (lasting impairment). The prognosis varies with the age of the person, clinical condition, and infecting organism.

How serious is Encephalitis? Can it lead to death or permanent damage to the brain?

Encephalitis is usually caused by a viral infection of the brain, causing swelling of the brain itself. It is rarely fatal but it is usually monitored in a hospital where the patient can be supplied IV fluids and treatment for accompanying symptoms. Since it is usually caused by a virus, antibiotics are not prescribed.  (+ info)

Can Purell kill the bacteria that causes bacterial encephalitis?

Encephalitis can be caused by a variety of bacteria and (more commonly) viruses. So it would depend on the exact organism that causes it. Generally Purell is effective against bacteria like strep and staph that cause serious infections. If you're worried you should use a non-alcohol hand sanitizer instead, these contain benzalkonium chloride and work a little better since they don't just evaporate, the antimicrobial residue stays on the hands once they've dried. This gives it alot more time to kill bacteria.  (+ info)
