Hormones, in general, work in feedback loops. For instance, the pituitary puts out ACTH and in response the adrenal glands secrete cortisol. The pituitary then senses the cortisol and then can add more or cease, depending on what is needed. If there is a tumor on the pituitary or on the gland itself. it may secrete the hormone or prevent the secretion of the hormone, thus the pituitary or the other gland may secrete high amounts.

Symptoms depend on the hormone. Often the symptoms are subtle at first, like fatigue, or mimic other disorders, like diabetes, high blood pressure and/or acne but usually do not respond well to treatment. Symptoms can be lactation, headaches, poor healing, weight gain, weight loss, bone growth etc. - the list is long, and therefore it is best to see a site and see symptoms specific to tumors.

Doctors should test both the pituitary hormone and the gland to see what is the source of the issue, however many do not. There can also be a tumor in another area of the body, called ectopic, that can cause issues however that is rare.

Often the hormone can be replaced and this will help, but you need to find the source of the issue as hormones are a system, and one can throw many off.
