Describe an example of ‘abnormal’ endocrine function by selecting a gland, a hormone it is supposed to release, and how the target organs are affected when that specific endocrine process does not function properly. How would you explain the process to a younger patient? Offer at least one analogy and any other means of explanation you can think of.

Why is the pancreas considered both an endocrine gland and exocrine gland?

what would an example of it's endocrine function and it's exocrine function?
----------

Endocrine because it releases products in to the bloodstreams (such as insulin, somatostatin and glucagon)
Exocrine because it also releases some products in to ducts (like digestive enzymes are released in to the small intestine via a ducts)  (+ info)

What is the difference between exocrine gland and endocrine gland?

though they both contribute in the secretions.
----------

Exocrine glands are glands that secrete their products (enzymes) into ducts (duct glands). They are the counterparts to endocrine glands, which secrete their products (hormones) directly into the bloodstream (ductless glands).
Typical exocrine glands include sweat glands, salivary glands, mammary glands, stomach, liver and the pancreas.

Endocrine glands are glands that secrete their product (hormones) directly into the blood rather than through a duct. This group contains the glands of the Endocrine system. The main endocrine glands include the pituitary gland, the pancreas (Langerhan's islets), the gonads, the thyroid gland and the adrenal glands.

Explain the interaction of the pituitary gland with the other endocrine glands.?

Explain the interaction of the pituitary gland with the other endocrine glands. If the pituitary gland malfunctions in what ways can the dysfunction show up in the body?
----------

Hormones, in general, work in feedback loops. For instance, the pituitary puts out ACTH and in response the adrenal glands secrete cortisol. The pituitary then senses the cortisol and then can add more or cease, depending on what is needed. If there is a tumor on the pituitary or on the gland itself. it may secrete the hormone or prevent the secretion of the hormone, thus the pituitary or the other gland may secrete high amounts.

Symptoms depend on the hormone. Often the symptoms are subtle at first, like fatigue, or mimic other disorders, like diabetes, high blood pressure and/or acne but usually do not respond well to treatment. Symptoms can be lactation, headaches, poor healing, weight gain, weight loss, bone growth etc. - the list is long, and therefore it is best to see a site and see symptoms specific to tumors.

Doctors should test both the pituitary hormone and the gland to see what is the source of the issue, however many do not. There can also be a tumor in another area of the body, called ectopic, that can cause issues however that is rare.

Often the hormone can be replaced and this will help, but you need to find the source of the issue as hormones are a system, and one can throw many off.

I had two pituitary tumors that were secreting two different hormones and it made it more difficult to figure out.  (+ info)

What is a disease that is caused by dysfunction in the production of a hormone in an endocrine gland?

Are you thinking , Thyroid? If so, take thyroxin to supplement the deficiency. Otherwise, there are many endocrine hormones that can get out of whack. Some you use drugs to suppress the gland that is overactive which cause another gland to be out of whack. For example. The kidney has an adrenal gland that controls testosterone, so if you have polycystic ovaries, this can cause the adrenal gland to over produce testosterone causing facial hair, deepened voice and excess testosterone in women causing the women not to have menstrual cycles and also cysts on their ovaries. They use a diabetic drug to also control this or a drug called spironolactone. This just shows you how entailed the endocrine system truly is.  (+ info)

Get to know them better. This is not a task only to be accomplished through dating. The more you get to know him or her, the more you can tell if you like them as a friend or something else. Just talk and do fun activities with the person.
Stop and consider why you like the person. There are many physically attractive and smart people out there. But if you see something beyond that really catches your attention, you've marked this person as unique and probably like them. Why else would they stand out from so many?
Consider how many times you think about the person. If you find yourself thinking about this person several times a day, and they are happy thoughts that possibly make your heart beat faster, then you probably like them.
Think how often you laugh at their jokes etc. When you like someone, you will find yourself laughing at things even if they aren't that funny. This is a natural attempt to make them feel appreciated.
If the one conversation between you and the person is stuck in you head and you cant stop telling people about it. this means it was important to you, and you probably like the person.
Consider how much you try to be near them. If you've planned your walking speed to catch a glimpse of them as many times of the day as possible, there is a good reason for that.
Think about how you feel if you touch him or her, by accident or on purpose. If you're still thinking about brushing shoulders several hours ago in school, then that is a special thought and you probably like them.
If you feel you're ready for a relationship, and are confident enough for a positive response, then just go ahead and ask them out. If you're unsure of their feelings for you, there are several wikihows on how to tell if someone likes you.  (+ info)
