Nervous about my Babies health?

When I was born I had Necrotizing Enterocolitis (A gastrointestinal disease causes destruction of the bowel (intestine) or part of the bowel)

My Nana (Dads Mum) also had this, and died in 2000 from an operation to repair some wear and tear of her scarring. (Bowel leaked out and poisoned her :()

My Grandma (Mum's Mum) also died from the same thing Easter Sunday of this year.

Now I'm worried my little girl will be born with this awful disease and will end up having to be operated on like I was when I was born.
I wasn't too worried at first because it skipped a generation at a time on my Dad's side, but then with my Grandma getting it, It has me worried.

Is she more likely to get it seen as both her great grandmothers suffered with it as well as her mother?

Probably just me worrying needlessly seen as she could be here at anytime now. Only 30 days to go!

What do you think?
Note: Necrotizing Enterocolitis is caused becuase bowels aren't fully formed, and after first feed they do not work properly.
Tried talking to my midwife, she didn't know. Went to a consultant but she was usless and didn't tell me anything at all. She said about 2 words to me and spent about a minute in the room with me where she just jabbed my scars and made them sore.

I think that there are a million worries that go through any parents head when they are about to have a baby. Add to that your family history and it is natural for you to worry. But, there is nothing that you can do, and stressing out will not help anyone.

Let your doctor know about your concerns, and make sure that you have a good pediatrician that will take over care of your baby. Have doctors that you can trust, then let go of it.  (+ info)

im getting breast milk for my preemie from my sister inlaw what should i know and do?

I'm getting breast milk from my sister in law for my preemie baby that was born three months early and is diagnosed with (NEC) Necrotising Enterocolitis its digestive issues and some researchers beleive formula could cause it and i agree anyways im not producing enough milk and i wont let him back on formula again so im getting milk from either my friend or my sister inlaw is this safe? does it matter her childs age does the milk change through age of baby? i heard it might not be good if i get milk from a mohter nursing a 6 month old when mine is only one month is this true? what have you heard also what precautions should i take on taking other peoples milk? i trust them fully but give me tips peps
thanks god bless

This topic was on The View a few days ago. It is VERY common! Woman do this all the time, and it's beautiful it can be done in time of need like this. A woman who is breast-feeding a 6-month old produces more fats in her milk that your baby would be still receiving from you in the womb, which is why it's crucial now. Don't forget wet nurses were very common in the 1700-1800's. (See the movie Marie Antionette?) Just keep pumping and soon he/she will be able to bond and drink solely from you, hang in there and good luck! God Blessed you with an Angel!   (+ info)

I think I developed apple intolerance?

Until like april, when I started a diet to gain some weight, I started eating fruit cuz well it's healthy!, and in july i ended up in the hospital with enterocolitis (my college's health dept sent me there cuz they thought i had apendicitis), then they sent me a soft diet, and i didnt get any better, then i went to a nutritionist and she sent me a colon-friendly diet, but i still had the problems cuz i was still eating apples and/or drinking apple juice

long story short, i discovered two weeks ago when i stopped eating apples for three days i felt better, then i ate one and like ten minutes later, i felt awful, i had kinda like cramps in my abdomen, i tried them peeled but it wasnt any better. So I got to the conclusion that I am intolerant to apples and today i ate a gerber (that baby food, cuz i used to like it), i felt bad after 10 minutes and i had to run to the toilet, then i read on the label that it had puréed apples.

Why did I develop this if I could eat them when i was younger (Im 22 now), can I ever eat apples or apple derivates again (without feeling ill)? Are there any complications if I eat apples every once in a while and still get the symptoms (sounds masoquistic but i really like 'em...)?

I heard that gluten-intolerant people get severe intestinal problems, including cancer if they keep eating foods that contain gluten, do I also have to avoid food containing apples?
----------

A person can develop allergies to a specific food at any time during their life. Be thankful that you figured out what is causing your condition and stop eating them. Eat artificially apple flavored things like hard candies and the like, if you must. I experienced the same exact problem and now read the label for apple content. My daughter has the same reaction to grapes.  (+ info)

Can I just decide that I don't want to breastfeed?

Everyone says it is a "personal choice"
What if I don't want to? What if I would rather not deal with sore nipples? What if I would like my breasts to go back to normal as soon as possible?
Is that what the "personal choice" is about, my self?

Why is this such a personal choice while excess health care costs totaling more than $4 billion must be paid by the U.S. health care system each year to treat otitis media, gastroenteritis, and necrotizing enterocolitis--childhood diseases and conditions preventable or reduced by breastfeeding. When prevention of obesity, diabetes, and other chronic conditions is factored in, the potential economic benefits of breastfeeding are significantly greater.

Do significant disparities in breastfeeding exist, with non-Hispanic black and socioeconomically disadvantaged groups experiencing lower breastfeeding rates, because it is a personal choice?

Maybe more needs to be done to ensure the achievement of our national breastfeeding goals and to create an environment where women and their families can be successful in achieving their personal breastfeeding goals.

haha I think a couple of people didnt finish reading your question. At first I was thinking wow this chick is so selfish. But then I kept reading and got the point you were making. haha. Yes I agree with the point that you are making. And people can give me all the thumbs downs they want but I do think that it is selfish when a mother deprives her child of the best start in life because of reasons like ' I dont want to ruin my breasts'
Formula has its place in society and is wonderful for mothers who cant feed. My heart goes out to them. But when mothers are perfectly able to feed but choice not to for selfish reasons then I just think thats sad  (+ info)

Infant with rectal bleeding and vomiting?

My son is 3 months old and has had rectal bleeding for over 2 months now and vomits a lot! His ped. referred him to a Ped. Gasternologist. The ped gastor. says he believes he is highly allergic to milk protiens. He had his formula switched a total of 6 times and is now on Neocate. As well as Beechnut cereal with every feeding, the Ped. Gastern. told me to stick 2 tsp in for every ounce, however I felt that was way to much cereal, for a 3 month old to be on. He is also on 3 acid reflux medications as well. The bleeding and vomiting subsided for about a week, but now it is all back again and now he is EXEREMLY fussy! I cant seem to do anything to calm him down. He falls asleep crying and wakes up crying! He has had a rough start at life, he was a NICU baby, need to be on a ventalor, cpap, nose cannale, feeding tube, had pnumonia 2x's well in the nicu and had bronctics approx 2 wks ago. He had lung diease as well when he was born and was not able to keep his own oxygen level, they did blood gasses on him several times a day when he was in the nicu, he had yellow jaundice & had to have phototherapy as well when in the nicu. He also need a blood trasfusion when he was a week old, he had surgery for Pyloric stenonis when he was a month old. Nothing seems to be getting better for him. The doctors will try something new with him and the sythpoms subside for a week or two and are right back again. I dont know what else to do or what other doctors to have him checked by! No doctor has done blood work or any test on him. I am getting fed up with the docs. I hate seeing my baby in pain. And feel helpless when I cant do anything to make him better! I thought he may have Necrotizing Enterocolitis but I would have thought they would have tested him for that in the nicu. He has just about every sythpom of it except the budgling stomach. I mentioned it to the gastren. doc and he didnt want to hear anything about it! He is thinking it is the milk allergy as well as acid reflux, well if it is that why isnt the medication working and why is he still having all the samethings still going on! Why do they go away for a few days when they try something new for him then come back. I feel like they are using him as a guiene pig. I dont know where else to turn! PLease help me! And him!!!
gerd is acid reflux isnt it? He had an ultrasound, upper gi and an x-ray, they said, they saw acid reflux but everything else looked ok!

Coley had it right and jandy gave you a pointer to the proper resource.

Please never forget that a mother knows best! You may not know the exact reason for something but every mother knows when her baby is getting worse and/or medications aren't working. Trust your instincts.

I cannot believe that your doctors have let this go on for two months without sending you elsewhere for a proper diagnosis. I really feel for all that you are going through and I hope that your baby gets a proper diagnosis and starts feeling better soon.  (+ info)

Do you think this should be required information for all families?
For those of you that have jumped on the negative bandwagon, all of this information has been well documented in medical journals. I did both with my twins, breast and bottle.
On alcohol they have warnings because it is a dangerous substance, so is formula. It is undeniable that it kills 1.5 million children per year. WIC in many states is having people sign an informed consent with this information. I am just seeing what others think.
If you don't agree with facts you don't have to be rude.

I think informed consent for use of infant formula is a good idea. I don't think the information you've posted in your question is defensible, however.  (+ info)

What is the most common reason that women choose to formula feed rather than breastfeed?

I understand that some women cannot breastfeed.

It is obvious to me the reasons a woman would choose to breastfeed:
Breastfeeding is the optimal method of feeding all infants, sick as well as healthy, preterm as well as full term. In addition to the myriad health benefits provided to mother and infant, breastfeeding provides significant economic and environmental benefits for families, employers, and society by reducing health care expenses, eliminating the need to purchase expensive formula, and reducing absenteeism from work to care for sick infants. Excess health care costs totaling more than $4 billion must be paid by the U.S. health care system each year to treat otitis media, gastroenteritis, and necrotizing enterocolitis--childhood diseases and conditions preventable or reduced by breastfeeding. When prevention of obesity, diabetes, and other chronic conditions is factored in, the potential economic benefits of breastfeeding are significantly greater.

It is not so obvious the reason a woman would choose to formula feed her child. Could someone give me a good reason?
It is known that these working mothers who can't take the time to pump are going to miss time from work to care for a sick infant.
----------

For the moms I knew, it was lack of support. Either from the workplace - time, privacy to pump. The spouse - wanting to bond, or even those reasons where people still think its "gross". Or even relatives, where they give the 'formula was good enough for me" reasons.

On the other end, then you have me, who would rather pump extra than workout to burn calories :)  (+ info)

Please Help me figure out what doc I need to take my son to, he has rectal bleeding, vomiting & crying spells?

What kind of Doctor do I need to try to find to see my son? A Pedartic Genetic Doctor an Pedatric Immunologist Doctor or some other type of doctor? Here is a good bit of info on him and the things going on with my little guy, so someone can maybe point me in the right direction. My son is 3 months old and has had rectal bleeding for over 2 months now and vomits a lot! His ped. referred him to a Ped. Gasternologist. Now today he woke up crying at 615am, his crib, blanket and pjs were soaked with throw up. I picked him up out of the crib and he threw up more all over my shoulder and down my back! His last feeding was at 407am and he only drank 4oz. He had to take his medication when he got up do I gave him that at 630am. I of course cleaned him all up, changed his diaper cause he had popped! The poop had little spots of blood through, today it wasnt bright red it was darker. And the poop was a VERY dark color, hard to tell if it was DARK green or black, I used a permant black mark and made a little mark on the diaper and compared the color to the poop and it seemed to look quite the same!
He hasnt had an fevers, except a small one about a month ago. That went away in a few hours. And he is gaining weight, atleast when we were at the doctors last he was! Thats why I think the doctors dont feel this is anything to be concerned about! But, I know my baby and I feel there is something more going on with him. We are going for a second opion for a Ped. Gastnerologist, but cant get in til Feb. 2nd, however he is on a waiting list and if anyone cancels they said they will get him in sooner!
PLease help me! And him!!!
He had an ultrasound, upper gi and an x-ray, they said, they saw acid reflux but everything else looked ok!

Neocate is probably the best formula for your child to be on at this time. Have you called or e-mailed your GI to let them know about the blood and his symptoms coming back?
What type of BeechNut cereal is he on? Rice, I hope. Do not do any other grain unless advised by your GI.
If your child had a necrotic gut, you would be back in the ICU, he would have a very, very high fever , and would not be gaining weight.

Have you checked his medication ingredients for anything that he would be allergic/ intolerant of? That would be my first thing to check. I have celiac and am lactose intolerant, and it is always a struggle to find medications that I can consume, mostly due to lactose.
The dark poop and black stuff indicated old blood (upper GI) and the fresh blood indicates lower GI stuff usually. I would make sure that you let your doc know that he is having blood in his poop again, asap.

I really feel your pain about waiting times to get in to see a GI specialist. It is like that all over. It seems like you have to come in and fall over to get a timely appt. Your best bet is to keep working and working with your Ped. and Ped. GI that you have for now until you get that other call. You can go to the office and weigh your baby weekly or every other week without an appt. usually. The good thing about that is if he starts to lose weight then you will know about it asap...
Good luck, and check his medication ingredients for any allergen such as milk, gluten, etc. If you need help finding the ingredients to his meds, you can call the producer of the meds directly and find out that way!
Blessings! "Nama  (+ info)

Do you think formula should only be able to be obtained by prescription?

I don't agree with the way women can just choose not to breastfeed.
Do you think making formula only available by prescription would help with this critical public health issue?
breastfeeding provides significant economic and environmental benefits for families, employers, and society by reducing health care expenses, eliminating the need to purchase expensive formula, and reducing absenteeism from work to care for sick infants.
Perhaps formula should only be made available to those few mothers who cannot physically breastfeed?
----------

Hm. While I agree with you, I think everyone should breastfeed their babies, I'm not sure we should be able to force moms to. Sometimes it just doesn't work for some families, and I think they should have that freedom.  (+ info)
