Is Temporal Lobe Epilepsy hereditary?

If my mom has TLE and her half sister had hormonal conic seizures is there a high likelihood that I will have some form of epilepsy in my life?
Are there tests to check for early signs?
Are there ways to prevent epilepsy?

I understand this isn't a diagnosis, I just want to know if I should talk to my neurologist about it.
----------

I had temporal lobe epilepsy and nobody on either side of my family had epilepsy before. It didn't matter how many generations back I checked, I was the first to have it.  (+ info)

What is temporal lobe epilepsy?

I was diagnosed with it last week and I still don't really know what it is. They said something about behavioral outbursts.
----------

My husband has Temporal Lobe Epilepsy..He was diagnosed as a child...When he was six months old he had menningitis and it damaged the Temporal region of his brain and thus began his seizures.....Over the years I have noticed that between seizures his behavior is pretty good but he never goes more than four weeks between seizures...In the meantime he seems to "build up" to seizures...By this I mean as he gets closer and closer to another seizure he is very short tempered....For example, I could ask him if he wants to go to the movies and he could bite my head off.....One minute he's fine and the next he is on edge...Most of the time he doesn't realize it....He is currently on three different seizure medicines and a med to help control his outbursts.....He also has a tendenacy to deny his outbursts.....But when he takes his medicine properly the outbursts are fewer and farther between......So take your medicine at the scheduled times and if you or your family notices more behavioral outbursts talk to your doctor about it....Don't take it personally because they love you and want the best for you.....Take Care....feel free to email me if you need emotional support....I deal with these issues on a dialy basis....  (+ info)

What is the purpose of the temporal lobe?

I suffer from temporal lobe epilepsy, hippocampal sclerosic. I was wondering what problems this can cause having my right temporal lobe removed?
----------

Function
The superior temporal gyrus includes an area (within the Sylvian fissure) where auditory signals from the cochlea (relayed via several subcortical nuclei) first reach the cerebral cortex. This part of the cortex (primary auditory cortex) is involved in hearing. Adjacent areas in the superior, posterior and lateral parts of the temporal lobes are involved in high-level auditory processing. In humans this includes speech, for which the left temporal lobe in particular seems to be specialized. Wernicke's area which spans the region between temporal and parietal lobes plays a key role (in tandem with Broca's area, which is in the frontal lobe). The functions of the left temporal lobe are not limited to low-level perception but extend to comprehension, naming, verbal memory and other language functions.

The underside (ventral) part of the temporal cortices appear to be involved in high-level visual processing of complex stimuli such as faces (fusiform gyrus) and scenes (parahippocampal gyrus). Anterior parts of this ventral stream for visual processing are involved in object perception and recognition.

The medial temporal lobes (near the sagittal plane that divides left and right cerebral hemispheres) are thought to be involved in episodic/declarative memory. Deep inside the medial temporal lobes, the hippocampi seem to be particularly important for memory function, and they also seem to play a part in controlling spatial behavior  (+ info)

Does This Sound Like Temporal Lobe Epilepsy? (TLE)?

Hey I Was Wondering If Anyone Suferes From Temporal Lobe Epilepsy?
Someone Mensioned This When I Explained My "Symptoms".
Recently I Have Been Encountering Small Spells Of Something. My Eyes Lock,I Can't Move But Hear Vivid Things Around Me, Almost As If I'm Day Dreaming. Does Anyone Know What This May Be?

Thankss xx

I am afraid this is not enough even to decide that you have pathology, let alone formulate a diagnosis. If you have concerns go see your GP.  (+ info)

Temporal Lobe Epilepsy?

For the past few weeks I haven't felt quite right. I am a hypochondriac, so I worry on everything, and I read about Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. Sometimes I just feel weird, like, I am losing my memory, or feeling odd, hard to explain. I try to think back on what I done earlier in the day just to make sure that I have my memory. I know that TLE has something to do with the hippocampus, which affects short term memory, so I didn't know if I have this or I just worry. I eventually can trace all my thoughts back, but I have it in my mind that something is wrong. When I am with friends and am doing something I do not think of it I feel fine, but sometimes I just drive down the road, and I get to thinking on it. I wonder, "Am I losing my memory?" My family and friends have reassured me that it is probably just me adjusting to the weather changes. (I have bad allergies and sinuses) It freaks me out to think about it. I had a concussion in July, but it cleared up. Could effects linger?

Go see your doctor. This is not something you can diagnose yourself. Likely part of your problem with memory is worrying so much about what you may or may not have. Let your doctor decide so you don't have to worry about it.  (+ info)

Do I have temporal lobe epilepsy?

For the last year I have sen several specialists. I started going when I experienced vertigo all the time and could no longer work at the computer. One of the specialists suggested a superior canal dehiscence. A couple of problems he couldn't explain about my diagnosis: The ear that tests abnormally on the VEMP and the OVEMP do not correlate with the CT scan showing the in my hole in my superior canal. I have 2 CT scans claerly showing a hole in my left side. When tested my left ear doesn't have an abnormal test w/ teh VEMP or OVEMP. My doctor cannot explain it. He is stumped. I have tinnitus in my left ear not the right. I have vision shifts but nystagmus was not present when tested at 100Mhz and 110.
Today is when I decided to do some research myself. I woke up and had an auditory hallucination. I've always heard and seen things that weren't there and thought maybe I'm more sensitive to supernatural experiences. This didn't seem supernatural today as I heard my daughter calling for me over and over. It woke me up. I heard it all the way to her room and when I opened the door she was fast asleep. I also smelled a few things that weren't there today. Once I smelled vomit and another I smelled cottage cheese. Neither are in my house right now so I don't believe the smells were really present. I am nauseated of and on all day everyday. My husband always makes fun of me because I continue conversations I haven't started yet. I thought it was just one of my quirks. I constantly space off even when people are talking to me. I have insomnia and I worry a lot. I pick on my arms and feet a lot and that sounded a lot like automatisms on of the symptoms. I also have several times had to leave bed because I experience laughing fits and don't want to wake my husband.

These symptoms alone are not enough to make a diagnosis, but you could be right. It would be a good idea to see a neurologist - an EEG would probably confirm or rule out epilepsy.  (+ info)

How would a doctor diagnose Temporal Lobe Epilepsy? and do you think this is TLE?

About a year ago I started getting these extremely strange and uncomfortable feelings of unreality. When this happens, I feel disconnected to everyone I normally feel connected to. As if I've never met them before or they are robots or something. I feel like I'm in a very bad dreamfog, but I know it's not a dream. There are no noticable visual or auditory hallucations, but everything looks and seems "different" and definitely unfamiliar. This happens randomly and suddenly and usually lasts anywhere from a couple minutes to an hour or two, depending how long it takes me to get my mind to stop thinking about it (for example, going to sleep or having my boyfriend tell me "everythings going to be ok" 20 times a minute). When it's about to happen, my stomach becomes disrupted, almost like right before you're about to have diarrhea?! (wtf) Could this be temporal lobe epilepsy and if so, how does a doctor diagnose it?
Oh and I've always had noticeable problems with memory. I used to think it was because I smoked pot, but I haven't done that in a long time, and the problems persist.

btw, im 19.

I am not sure why you think it might be TLE but it MIGHT be a type of seizure. I have something called Complex Partial seizures but there are Simple Partial seizures too. In CP I do not respond to anything but in SP I understand that you could still be aware of your surroundings. To diagnose seizures you would need to be seen by a neurologist who would do a few different kinds of tests. MRI and EEG are the most likely. The MRI would determine if there is any abnormality within your brain. The EEG would monitor brainwaves, to see if there are any abnormal waves. The treatment is medication, which your doctor would need to prescribe. If you feel that there is something going on then you need to seek professional help. Speak with your family doctor and express your concerns. Suggest that you would like to be seen by a neurologist who specializes in seizures. (yes, there are different neurologist who specialize in other neurological disorders)  (+ info)

Is there any thing other than Temporal lobe epilepsy I could have?

A common cold

Maybe an ingrowing toe nail

There are thousands of things you could have instead of epilepsy, but you don't give enough detail to get any real answers  (+ info)

can you have Temporal lobe epilepsy and not know it for a while?

Sure! I imagine it happens a lot. Simple partial seizures, a type of seizure caused by temporal lobe epilepsy, can cause sudden chills, abnormal sweating, odd vision, smells or sounds, or a déjà vu like feeling. If you were walking down the street and had a déjà vu feel or things just didn't’t feel/sound/smell right for about 15-30 seconds would you race off to see your doctor?

I was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was 15 and could have been having seizures before then. The only reason I was diagnosed was because I had a seizure where I blacked out and someone saw it happen. Since I didn’t do anything really odd or physical during my seizures I could have been blacking out in school and not have noticed it (especially in my algebra class). After I was diagnosed though everything seemed to fit, and when I have a déjà vu feeling I now know what it is.

If someone is around you/whomever when it happens, ask them if you did or said something odd when it happened.  (+ info)

Panic attack or temporal lobe epilepsy?

Sice i was twelve i have been having strange attacks. I can tell it is going to happen before it does. I have a feeling of de ja vu and feel like i'm dreaming and i get this weird sick feeling. It's like i remeber something but can't understand it. I had a brain scan and it came back normal. Please help...
If i have scar tissue on my brain what implications does that have....
----------

wow...what an intelligent person you are. It is hard to diagnose TLE. You need to speak to a neurologist...your Dr may not be able to do this. My guess is yes...and tell the neurologist to look for mylination while he is at it...with scar tissue..good luck. PS if you are AfroAmerican have them check your liver for iron deposits..  (+ info)
