what are the little bumps in my vagina where the mucous membrane meets the regular skin?

I also have them where my lips meet my facial skin. It's NOT any kind of STD.. they've been there for as long as I can remember. Does it have anything to do with the transition from mucous membrane to regular skin? Or is it hair follicles? or what?
it's not like they appear and disappear.. they're ALWAYS there on both my vagina AND my mouth.
----------

the one near your lips is totally differnt don't worry everyone gets them.(not sure what they are though ) i don't exactly get what the genital ones are though sorry! ask a parent they won't be mean or rude or make you feel bad they're there to help!  (+ info)

Is it normal to loose brown mucous for 2 days after a membrane sweep and have period-like cramps non stop?

Please help, I am 5 days past due and already went to hospital twice with false alarms, but after this second membrane sweep all this brownish mucous is scaring me because it is non stop. Now I have had cramps for about 8 hours, could it be contractions?
----------

The brown discharge sounds normal after sweep. If you suspect contractions I would go get checked out or at least call the advice nurse for advice. Good luck!  (+ info)

What would you like to ask?Suppose Janice is placed on bed rest at home after a preterm rupture of membrane at?

Suppose Janice is placed on bed rest at home after a preterm rupture of membrane at 30 weeks of pregnancy. What assessments would you want to do to ensure she is not developing choriomnionitis? Suppose she tells you that she is too busy to stay on bed rest. What suggestions would you give her so she could best achieve bed rest? Does she have an ethical obligation to her fetus to rest?

What is the success rate of membrane sweeps?

I am 40 weeks and 1 day. Am booked in for a membrane sweep on friday.
----------

I had mine done and my water broke two days later

It can and WILL work, if your baby and your body are ready for it to work.

My midwife suggested curb walking. She said you'll feel stupid, and probably look silly doing it. Walk up and down the street with one foot on the curb, and the other on the road. It'll rock your pelvis and encourage your cervix to soften up a bit.  (+ info)

why are the labia minora considered to be skin folds and NOT mucous membrane?

In essence, what makes the labia minora classified to be skin folds, and NOT mucous membrane?
----------

because they don't secrete mucous....

The Bartholin glands do.

As for the answer to your email: For the same reason the skin in your armpit isn't classified as a mucous membrane. Mucous membranes have multiple goblet cells interspersed within the tissue itself. These goblet cells secrete mucous. That's what makes them mucous membranes. Glands are completely separate from the tissue, therefore does not make the surrounding tissue a mucous membrane.

If this were true, then the sweat glands in your armpit would automatically make your armpit a mucous membrane....  (+ info)

Is it normal to bleed after getting a membrane sweep?

Today is my due date, so my doctor checked me and did a membrane sweep. She did say that I would bleed, but she didn't say how much or for how long. I got the sweep at 2pm, it is now 8pm and I am still bleeding, I have gone through 3 panty liners, and everytime I go pee pee there are blood clots that come out. Is this normal or should I call L&D?
----------

Exact thing happened to me, if its dark its from the membrane sweep, if its pink its probably labor!!!!! I had an exam on a Wensday, bled until the next morning then quit. Then that Saturday I started bleeding again but this time it was pink blood, very little at first, then it kept getting heavier. About an hour after the first spot of pink blood my contractions started, to begin with they just felt like menstrual cramps. I hope that helped and Goodluck & Congrats! :D  (+ info)

What is this membrane sweep everyone is talking about?

Hi im in Australia... What is this membrane sweep i keep reading about?
What is involved and do they do it here in Australia?
So for my lack of knowledge this is my 1st bub...
Thanks

Membrane sweeping is done by your midwife or doctor. While internally examining you, she will simply "sweep" a finger around your cervix (neck of your womb). The aim is to separate the membranes around your baby from your cervix. This releases hormones called prostaglandins, which may kick-start your labour.

A membrane sweep increases the likelihood that labour will start within 48 hours. It has a higher chance of working if your cervix is already softening and preparing for labour. It does not increase the risk of infection to either you or your baby.  (+ info)

What is a membrane sweep and does it hurt?

I have seen people talk about having a membrane sweep when going over due, but what is it?

How is it performed and does it hurt??x
----------

If you're in the UK then it'll be done by the midwife at around 41 weeks of pregnancy (NHS clinical guidelines say that it shouldn't be done before this date), you don't need to be dilated to have it done and so long as the midwife can reach your cervix (they're sometimes tilted or obscured) then it can be carried out.

Basically the midwife will do an internal examination, during which she will sweep her fingers around the cervix. It's not a particularly great image but imagine swirling your fingers in a plughole, that's sort of what it's like. The aim is to separate the membranes that anchor the amniotic sac to the cervix. This releases hormones called prostaglandins, which can kick-start labour.

It has a higher chance of working if your cervix is already softening and preparing for labour and if it's been successful then it will work within 48 hours of the sweep being done.

It doesn't hurt, but it can be slightly uncomfortable. It feels just like getting a smear done with some added pressure (the bit where she does the actual sweep). You could have cramping afterwards and a little spotting - I had both but I was in active labour and 4cms dilated when I had a sweep done so I was expecting those things anyway. The midwife did it to try help my waters break as I didn't want any harsh intervention (in the end they didn't break until I was 9.5cms and had to be done with a little hook lol).  (+ info)
