My brother is having surgery tomorrow for esophageal cancer as well as a large hernia. How bad is this?

Is it going to be much worse for him, with two surgeries at the same time? What are his chances, and how long is the recovery? We just don't know what to expect, and we are very worried.
----------

That isn't an easy question to answer because surgery can completely remove a tumour in some cases, but in others it might be done only to provide relief (palliative). The fact that he is having the hernia done as well is a positive sign. The surgeon and oncologist should really have discussed with you what to expect. I suggest you ask these questions directly:
1) what pain relief (hopefully a PCA pump), what drains, catheters etc?
2) how long before he can eat by mouth?
3) how long they expect him to be in hospital?
4) what is the long-term prognosis?
5) has he been properly assessed (CT scan) to make sure the cancer has not spread?  (+ info)

Anyone ever had an esophageal motility test?

I'm looking for anyone's personal experience with having this test done. Did they numb your throat first? Did you feel nauseated afterwards?

sorry maybe this will help?

What types of treatment are there for esophageal cancer?

I mean other than Chemo and radiation.
----------

Hi Nishi

There are several ways to heal the body, its a matter of actually believing you can and doing it. DOesnt really matter what type of cancer it is. The body is toxic and you need to get the toxins out. The best herbal plan I know is called the Incurables program (herdoc.com). My uncle used this plan to heal his Lympoma within 60 days. Easy part is knowing what to do and actually doing it is a challenge. Educating yourself on detoxifying the body you will overcome any obstacle.

Best of health to you  (+ info)

What is life expectancy on a person with Stage 4A esophageal cancer, who underwent chemo and radiation?

My father's tumor shrunk along with the cancer in the lymph nodes. He just began eating a few foods such as soup and small pieces of bread. Surgery is not an option because the cancer is still in distant lymph nodes. The chemo and radition just shrunk the cancer, but didn't eliminate it. I was just wondering what a general life expectancy time frame would be.

First of all, my heart goes out to you sweetie. I have a brother with the same kind of cancer. What you are going through is very hard, but the Good Lord will give you the strength that you need.
As far as your question goes, nobody can answer that question with certainty, because it is related to so many factors, most of them specific of the patient, since each case is entirely different from the next. My brothers Oncologist gave my brother (also at Stage 4) not too long. But my brother keeps proving the doctors wrong, with his will to live.

What I can tell you from the heart is, the best thing we can do is provide love and support to our loved one with cancer. Spend as much time with him as you can. Try to give him a bit of a sense of normalcy, in a sense that you talk to him about other things as well and not only the cancer. Reminisce about funny/happy moments you had together with him. Make him laugh. Look at him when you talk to him, so that he can feel your love.
and don't worry too much about how long you are going to have him with you, instead make the most of the time you do have him with you. As to the question of when, only the Good Lord knows sweetie.

PS Do not forget to take good care of yourself. ;)  (+ info)

What are the chances of a 13 year old to get esophageal cancer?

HECK, you think I'm smoking at this age? Wow, you've got to be kidding me!
Just asking, I'm worried like hell.
----------

Unless there were some other risk factors at play it would be unusual.

How painful is esophageal cancer?

I was diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) recently. Right now, I am having a discomfort in my throat. It's not painful, but I feel as if something is wrong. I don't have any difficulty swallowing and not experiencing weight loss, though. In fact, I am gaining weight.

I am also a hypochondriac and I am really worried if this is esophageal cancer, as I have read somewhere that people with GERD have a major risk of esophageal cancer. I'm 17, by the way.

Help?
----------

Yes -its true that GERD puts people at risk of this type of cancer, but it takes decades to develop. There's about a one-in-million chance of someone 17 years old getting esophageal cancer. You don't have any symptoms of cancer except where they overlap with GERD.   (+ info)

Is a small esophageal ulcer a serious condition?

I'm only 15 and I'm really freaked out. I take doxycycline for my acne and it didn't go down properly, and I might have a tiny ulcer from it. It hurts to swallow but it's been getting better every day and I went to the ER and they told me that if it doesn't go away by Monday I have to go get it checked out. Is this something that will heal and not have future effects on me, or will I have to suffer with it for the rest of my life? I am absolutely terrified. Help!
----------

Doxycycline is a drug FREQUENTLY associated with a condition called "Pill Esophagitis". meaning, the pill gets stuck in your esophagus and causes an ulcer to form.

This is why the pharmacist probably told you to drink the pill with at least a full glass of water. Did you do that? probably not. And now you are suffering the consequences.

So long as it is getting better every day, you don't have to worry. It'll take about 1 full week for you to feel completely back to normal.

As far as the future... yes, it can leave scar tissue and form a "stricture". This is rare, but it can happen. This can cause you to have problems swallowing in the future - years from now. Nothing you can do about it.

Again, TAKE ALL MEDS with at least 1 full glass of water. Especially the following meds: doxcycyline, fosamax, potassium supplements.

What is the best treatment for esophageal pain from lung cancer radiation therapy?

Agree with the above. Also:
Narcotics are frequently required as pain is severe many times.
Diflucan or nystatin (antifungal therapies) are required if secondary fungal infection.
Carafate suspension can provide some relief, as can the various miracle or magic mouthwashes.
