Confusion between Diffuse esophageal spasm or heart disorder?

Hi,

I am a perfectly healthy, 26 years old male. I don't drink or smoke. I am a regular jogger although I have been inconsistent in recent months.

I had a mild to slightly intense pain in the left part of my chest a few days back. The location where the pain was experienced was not constant; it was mostly in the left region though. I have experienced similar pain a couple of months back.

I googled for these symptoms and found that 'Diffuse Esophageal Spasm' (DES) might be one of the reasons. I do have a chronic problem of irregular bowl movements.

Just to be sure, I consulted a Cardiologist. He checked my blood pressure which was normal and did an ECG which was normal too. After reviewing the blood pressure readings and the ECG, he said that I do not have a heart problem and prescribed me some medicine for the DES.
I am not sure if his diagnosis was correct. Should I see another Cardiologist? Or Should I go for an echocardiograph? Does a normal ECG always mean 'no heart problem'?
----------

Instead of seeing another cardiologist you might want to talk to a gastroenterologist. I was diagnosed with esophageal spasms too. I had some abnormal heart beats and horrible chest pain. After a million tests and even a cardiac catheterization which showed no heart problems. (no idea what causes the abnormal beats which were shown on EKG's) The horrible pain continued so I went to a gastroenterologist who diagnosed me as having esophageal spasms. There are different medications that can be used once they find out what is causing the spasms. I wish you all the best in treating this painful condition!  (+ info)

diffuse esophageal spasm?

Anything to take over the counter. This is my 2nd epsode. Been a couple of hours. Man this sucks. Can't eat or drink!
Not hiccups, basicly i regerg anything i eat or drink. And about every half hour my syliva comes back up.
All I did was wait. You also should try to calm down. Try not to think about it. Try doing something else to keep your mind off of the problem. I am going to the gastro doctor. Good luck to all who have this problem.

What the home treatment or self treatment for esophageal spasm?

ive been suffering from this esophageal spasm lately... and it really sucks. I mean feel like i am soffucated. and even i try to relax it wont relax... pls help.
----------

there are few treatments really, some Dr's prescribe ranitidine or omeprazole to stop you making so much stomach acid so when the spasm occurs the acid doesn't jump into your oesophagus and cause you pain.
for the spasm itself, its a case of trial and error with meds as the drugs they use are all primarily designed to be used on other conditions.
Things you can do yourself are as follows
avoid taking big gulps of fluids
avoid food + fluids that are excessively hot or cold
make sure you drink plenty at mealtimes to make food easier to swallow + digest
some people can identify specific food as triggers- your Dr can help you look into this.

also please make sure you have a medical diagnosis of oesophageal spasm before you self treat as there are many digestive disorders with similar symptoms, some harmless and some potentially very serious.  (+ info)

Treatment :
Sublingual (beneath the tongue) nitroglycerin may be effective in an acute episode. Long-acting nitroglycerin and calcium channel blockers are also used to treat esophageal spasms. Chronic cases are sometimes treated with low-dose antidepressants such as nortriptyline to reduce symptoms.

Rarely, severe cases require surgery.

Expectations (prognosis) :
An esophageal spasm may be a condition that comes and goes (intermittent) or lasts for a long time (chronic). Medicine can help relieve symptoms.

I think I have an esophageal or cricopharyngeal spasm, has anyone else? What are your symptoms?

See a gastroenterologist and get an endoscopy done. I had narrowing of my esophagus and it was hard swallowing food. You shouldn't try to diagnose yourself.  (+ info)

What medication is helpful for esophageal spasms?.?

A lot of times, I get severe epigastric spasms anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour after I eat. Even if it's a food that doesn't bother me, I'll get a spasm from the same food in the same quantity at times. I've tried benzodiazapines but they don't work.
Any suggesstions? Also maxeran and buscopan don't work.

I have acid reflux and its causing swallowing problems and esophageal spasm was told to take nexium but....?

It goes against everything I believe in these proton pump inhibitors drugs are very bad for you they cause calcium or bone loss vitamin b-12 deficiency protein malabsorbtion and risk of food borne illness plus bacterial pneumonia. I need them to let my esophagus heal so i can swallow easier but feel the risks are huge what to do im 28 male young but need nutrition like everyone else. Another question is this it takes 5 hours for you stomach to digest 50% of its contents at 100% stomach acid drugs like nexium shut down acid as much as 95% this means the food i eat will just sit for like 24 plus hours slowly digesting if at all?
http://www.yourlawyer.com/topics/overview/nexium many other articles similar

Whoa there... too many numbers, not enough punctuation. You're somewhat confused, I think you have way too much information at your disposal, but no good way to synthesize it.

Proton pump inhibitors are not bad for you. If they were bad for you, we wouldn't prescribe them. They help you and your stomach deal with food. Look at it this way: if you can't swallow, you're not getting any nutrition anyway. So step 1: ppi will help you swallow. Bone loss, calcium loss and B12 deficiency should not be caused by ppis (you're not taking THAT much) and anyway you need supplements regardless of your diet. You should be taking Vitamin D and calcium daily anyway.

The reason GERD (gastric esophageal reflux disease) is so bad is because it can lead to acid erosion of your esophagus and, eventually, to cancer (squamous carcinoma). This cancer is very bad and few people survive. If they do, it is after major surgery, possibly requiring the removal of your stomach - and now you definitely will have severe deficiencies of everything, and serious side effects.

If you can prevent this from happening - and you are at higher risk because of your GERD - then you really should. Listen carefully to your doctor about the side effects of ppis, and if you are worried about any deficiencies, take vitamins and supplements. The side effects of ppi definitely outweigh not just the pain of heartburn, but far worse pain in the future.  (+ info)

Does anyone else have esophageal spasms?

I have had esophageal spasms for over 20 years. I am 52. I have had my throat dilated, but it never lasts. My doctor is very good, and has suggested Botox, but everything I read says that that doesn't last. There are like 2 problems: the spasms and a stricture. It is very hard to eat. Does anyone else have this problem? What really helps you? Does Botox help? Thanks!
----------

i assume these spasms also affect your speech, that is, as you are talking, your throat tightens a bit and you sound like someeone is choking you?

There is a name for this condition, but that doesnt matter so much. What you should do is make an appointment with your general family doctor wtho should then refer you to a specialist or two (an ear, nose, and throat doctor and hopefully a boardd-certified speech pathologist)

Yes, different treatment options exist, but you won't know until you obtain proper dx and trreatment. Call your primary care doc today and disuss your plan.

Good luck!  (+ info)

Have you ever experienced Oesophageal Spasm?

I had crushing chest pain which lasted for @ 15 mins yesterday which when it stopped I felt normal again.

I have had Oesophageal Spasm twice before in my life and its really frightening as well as painful.
Any personal experience of this?
----------

Yes

I've had it , and still get it from time too.

You're right its damn scary and damn painful, the only thing I found to help was to drink something, in little sips, in an attempt to get the normal peristalsis in the gullet to get the oesophegal pain and spasm to stop, it seems to have a fair level of success for me.

If it persists over a period of time coming back again and again you should really see you doc about it, in the absence of a related pre existing condition for you, it should be looked into for sure.

even though I know what mine is related to it never quite eases the fear, if if lasts for more than 30 mins, I really would go to your local A+E, don't drive yourself though.
