Why is the pain from peptic ulcers worse on an empty stomach?

Is it because stomach acid can easily reach the open sore?
----------

Yes because when theres no food in your stomach, the acidic fluid in your stomach easily reaches the open sore because there is no food for the acidic hydrochloric acid to "mix".  (+ info)

Is a peptic ulcer and duodenal ulcer the same thing?

Im doing a project and my assigned topic was petic / doudenal ulcers. Are these two type of ulcers the same?
----------

A peptic ulcer is a sore in the lining of your stomach or duodenum. The duodenum is the first part of your small intestine. A peptic ulcer in the stomach is called a gastric ulcer. One that is in the duodenum is called a duodenal ulcer. A peptic ulcer also may develop just above your stomach in the esophagus, the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. But most peptic ulcers develop in the stomach or duodenum.  (+ info)

Will a peptic ulcer in a 13 year old male go away without taking any medication?

My son was diagnosed with a stomach ulcer and he's 13 years old, he wasn't given any medication; does that mean the ulcer will just heal itself?
----------

yes but be he'll have to be very careful of his eating habits for 2 or 3 months. Many things are not so obvious, like milk can really aggravate it.

Can I use cephalexin to cure my peptic ulcer?

I recently just got my second peptic ulcer, a friend had some extra cephalexin, if I took this would it help cure my ulcer? Also my second question is I am allergic to ammoxicillin what are the possibilities of me being allergic to cephalexin?
Is there any over the counter antibiotics I can use to cure the ulcer?
----------

Just because you are allergic to penicillin doesn't mean you will be allergic to cephalexin - it is a different type of antibiotic.

But it is not a good idea taking medication that has not been prescribed for you. This is not a good antibiotic for treating infections in the gastrointestinal tract so probably won't help. How do you know you have got a second peptic ulcer? Has it been diagnosed? Because whoever diagnosed it should be recommending the appropriate treatment. Other antibiotics like metronidazole and tetracycline work better for peptic ulcers and are normally used in combination with an acid suppressor.

It is better to see a Doctor who can put you on the right treatment. It is no good taking antibiotics that won't help because you might become resistant to them and if you need them in the future they may not work as well as they should  (+ info)

What are some good things to eat if I have Esophagitis?

I have Esophagitis and was wondering if anyone knew any food that would help put down the acidic pains, or that just are good to eat. Thanks
----------

First make sure you're not taking any medications that could make it worse, like aspirin, or ibuprofen, and don't smoke. Avoid any acidic food or beverages (oranges, grapefruit, cola, caffeine, etc.) It is better to eat more frequent smaller meals. Go on the internet and find a good listing of a "soft" or "bland" diet. The same types of food that would be listed for an ulcer, or gastritis would also be good for esophagitis. If you've diagnosed yourself then you need to see a doctor if the condition persists.  (+ info)
