Does anybody have had elimination diet to treat Eosinophilic esophagitis, and how did it work?

my son has EE, he is 5 and the doctor recommended elimination diet. I am afraid that he will lose weight and nutrients not getting all those foods. But on the other side he is miserable now, not able to eat solid food.
PLEASE READ THE QUESTION BEFORE ANSWERING, THANKS
----------

EE is simply an allergic reaction to certain food groups that trigger the inflammation of the esophagus. I have EE and was diagnosed 5 years ago. Unfortunately, my food group that I had to eliminate was wheat, but, I found gluten-free products which made the symptoms less severe. EE targets one or more food groups including eggs, wheat, nuts, fruits, raisins, veggies, and even red dye 40 which is an artificial food color found in juices, and even is found in strawberries. My suggesstion to you is test which foods cause the EE, or inflammation to act up. Then, if one or more food groups cause severe inflammation, avoid those foods or red dye 40. On a side note, I restricted myself to a juice diet and a gluten diet. I did lose weight and I did not receive the nutrients I needed to keep my body functioning properly.

Also, tell your doctor about flovent and Nexium. Flovent is a lung dilator for asthma patients; but, I take Flovent and it seems to suppress the eosinophills, or allergy cells which cause EE. The other medication to reduce inflammation is an acid reducer known as Nexium. Hope all goes well. Best of luck.  (+ info)

I have been taking lansoprazole 30mg for two months for confirmed endoscopy peptic ulcers?

As the pain and sickness has not improved, I have been prescribed zantac.which after five days has improved the pain and sickness.

Is it because zantac if more expensive, than lansoprazole.
----------

They act in different ways. Zantac is an antihistamine and reduces the effect of the histamines in the stomach that cause acid to be produced. Lanzaprosole is a Proton-pump inhibitor which has a direct effect on the acid producing bits of your stomach, also by inhibiting the action of a chemical. Not sure why one has worked better for you but since it has, stick with it.  (+ info)

Does anybody have any experience with Eosinophilic Esophagitis?

I was just diagnosed with this form of esophagitis after getting a biopsy done. I was just wondering if anybody has any knowledge that they can share with me about this. I have had difficulty swallowing solid foods from time to time. Please shed some light on this situation. Thank You!
Josho can you name some good doctors in the pittsburgh area. Thank You So Much!!
----------

I'm an allergist, and we deal with eosinophilic esophagitis all the time. It's a growing problem these days, and may people are suffering from the symptom you described, in addition to others. At this point, we know some information, but there's much we still don't know about the diagnosis.

Part of the diagnosis is finding whether gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) medications improve your symptoms. These included medications like Prevacid, known as proton-pump inhibitors. If they don't help, additional testing is required to discover whether certain foods are associated with your symptoms. Occasionally, we try to withdraw certain foods that are most commonly associated with eosinophilic esophagitis. These include starches, some meats and some fruits.

Additional treatment involves using some inhaled steroids, but instead of rinsing your mouth, patients will swallow some water, which then coats the esophagus with the steroid. This in turn limits the presence of eosinophils in the lining of the esophagus, and hopefully your symptoms will improve. I realize this is a lot of information, but I'm sympathetic to your symptoms.

Dr. Marc Rothenberg is a leading expert in eosinophilic esophagitis, and he's located at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. If you google his name and the diagnosis, several educational resources arise.

Overall, you are not alone. There's an increasing number of patients with your symptoms. We just started a clinic for patients with eosinophilic esophagitis, and we're located at National Jewish Medical Center in Denver, CO. If you'd like a name of a good doc in your area, email me and I'll find you someone helpful.

Take care,

how would you encourage someone with ulcers to get on the peptic ulcer diet?

i have to do a paper on the peptic ulcer diet and one of the questions i have to answer in my paper is how would you encourage someone with ulcers to get on the peptic ulcer diet? i need to have the paper done by friday so i hope i get my answer soon!!!!
----------

In my medical experience, there is no such thing as a peptic ulcer diet.

There are 2 main causes of PUD. If the ulcer is caused by H. pylori bacteria, antibiotics will be necessary to reverse the damage. If it is caused by NSAID over-use (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, ie aspirin), you need to discontinue using the NSAID.

As far as food and diets go, you can eat whatever you like as tolerated by the pain of the ulcer.  (+ info)

This will work in case it doesn't then only surgery is the option in which Doctors will sew your upper portion of stomach which attaches with your food pipe. What is the safest and most afforadble treatment of peptic ulcer?

treatment at home. herbal medicine
----------

Sorry there is no safe herbal treatment.

A peptic ulcer ( which is an open sore) is in the lining of the stomach or duodenum, where hydrochloric acid and pepsin are present.

Most ulcers (80 percent of gastric ulcers and 90 percent of duodenal ulcers) develop as a result of infection with a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori).

People with ulcers may experience serious complications if they do not get treatment. The most common problems include: bleeding, perforation (where ulcer eats a hole in the wall of the stomach or duodenum, and bacteria and partially digested food can spill through the opening into the sterile abdominal cavity (peritoneum) and cause peritonitis, an inflammation of the abdominal cavity and wall) and narrowing and obstruction resulting in vomiting the contents of the stomach.

You would be doing yourself a great disservice if you dont get and use the best treatment you can find, and - the best is very safe and very effective if taken properly.

Best of luck with that.  (+ info)
