Can doxycycline treat bacterial infections of the eye?

Is doxycycline systemic? Can it treat infections anywhere in the body, including the eyes if one had bacterial conjunctivitis?
----------

Question #1: Ciprofloxacin & trimethoprim-polymyxin are often used. For inclusion conjunctivitis, oral azithromycin, doxycycline or erythromycin are used. Gonococcal conjunctivitis may be treated with an injection of ceftriaxone. And adenoviral onjunctivitis is treated in a another way.

Question #2: Doxy is systemic if taken orally. Naturally, topical doxy is not.

Question #3: Although doxy is a broad-spectrum antibiotic in the tetracycline family, the trend now is toward targeted therapy using narrow-spectrum antibiotics. If you have doxy lying around, discard it. There are more kinds of conjunctivitis than bacterial, so one would need to be diagnosed first. Only bacterial conjunctivitis is treated with an antibiotic.  (+ info)

How can I prevent eye infections?

I often have conjunctivas that keeps coming back. Ive tryed eye drops and eye cream, but they didnt work for long. Does anyone have a way I could stop my eyes from being infected and and natural treatments?
----------

You might look at your eye make up as a cause of this and get rid of all the old stuff and buy some that has "hypoallergenic" listed on the side of the package. Keeping your fingers away from your eyes will also help. And, if you wear contacts, no cleaning the contacts with spit - all of these can increase your risk of coninued conjunctivitis.  (+ info)

I was in Brazil. Do you know of any eye parasite infections common in Brazil?

Cultures for bacteria and viral infections came back negative. I am prone to corneal abrasions and rain water fell into my eyes at Carnivale. Only my left eye is affected.
----------

There are no eye parasite infections common in Brazil. It must be an American thing.  (+ info)

Can dry lips and eye infections be related?

I have recently been suffering from horrible dry lips so bad I have looked like I am drinking fruit punch. In the past four weeks I have had three eye infections. I haven't spoke to a doctor yet, but I am wondering if they could be some how related. I have never had dry skin and do live in an area that has very cold dry winters. I have also never had a problem with eye infections....

Does anyone have any thoughts

Can dogs spread eye infections to humans?

I woke up with red eyes and a yellowish discharge. I already have an appointment with the doctor; but I was wondering if maybe this eye infection had something to do with my dog. He is a three month-old chihuahua and he has a swollen eye with the same yellowish discharge, but it is common for him to be like this because his eyes always get watery when he is outside. He has his shots and everything.
----------

i don't think that would happen.. but who knows.. def. check with the doctor.. thats weird!

You can try simple eye drops for now, but should keep an eye on it. (Seriously no pun intended) If it gets worse you may need an anti biotic to get rid of the infection.  (+ info)

One reason why people who wear contact lenses are more likely to get eye infections is because?

One reason why people who wear contact lenses are more likely to get eye infections is because

Choose one answer.
a. Contacts shuttle tears away from the nasolacrimal duct

b. the lacrimal aparatus works less when one wears contacts

c. Contact lense wearers tend to have dilated pupils

d. Contact lens wearers do not blink as much, allowing microbes to settle on the eye

e. Contact lenses inhibit tear production
----------

NOTA.

f. b/c contact lenses have the following effects:

1) hold microbes onto the eye b/c of lack of tear exchange
2) create a low oxygen environment
3) hold microbes in the matrix of the lens (soft)

contacts DO NOT "decrease tear production" nor do they have much to do with the lacrimal gland or "shuttling" tears anywhere or pupil size or number of blinks. is this a real question on some test somewhere? if it is, its one w/o a correct answer (among the 5 listed choices)  (+ info)

Anyone who knows anything about eye infections out there?

I just got back from my eye doctor who said I have epidemic keratoconjunctivitis or EKC. She was very unprofessional about it, and was yelling at me to not touch anything, she also new nothing about it at all. She said I have white dots on my cornea. I looked it up online and it said it;s pink eye. Is this what I have? Or do you know anything about this at all? I[m confused, she didn't know what it could be caused by, what to do to treat it, or anything at all.. Thanks in advanced everyone.
----------

I just looked it up on webmd.com and from what they say about it is that it is pink eye. They suggest you use a precribed eye drop or ointment to clear it up. If your doctor does not know about this, then I think you need to see a Ophthalmologist. Not just any eye doctor. However, your eye doctor should have known what pink eye is. So I would find a new doctor. Good luck.  (+ info)
