How do you prevent chronic eye infections in newborns from tear ducts getting clogged?

I've been told to add a drop of breastmilk to the affected eye, also always use clean hands to wipe the eye or moistened kleenex or clean towel.  (+ info)

Yes, they can. But if the condition does not resolve relatively soon then you should go in for an exam.  (+ info)

how does the eye resist bacterial infections?

i know that the eyelids help protect the eye from bacterial infections

but when your eyes are exposed and the eyelids are open, how to the eyes resist bacterial infections?

(any websites would be helpful)
----------

Firstly, the eye has good reflexes, for example, the blink reflex. So when something comes close to your eye you blink immediately. The cornea is highly innervated (very sensitive) so you will flinch if something comes close to your eye. I heard somewhere that we have eyebrows to keep stuff from entering the eye but i'm not sure how true this is.

Also, the tears contain biochemicals which have antibacterial properties.

The cornea has an outer layer of cells called epithelia which help keep bacteria out. So if you have some trauma to your eye and there is damage to these cells, there is an open passage for bugs to enter.

Eyelids help by keeping the eye hydrated and they help keep foreign bodies out when you blink.

Do azithromycin PILLS treats eye infections?

I have bronchitis, and I've been taking azithromycin pills to treat it. I also may have a mild eye infection, and my doctor said that the same azithromycin pills (she only prescribed me these) would cure the eye infection if I had one.

I'm wondering if these pills can actually cure eye infections, because I think that if I want to treat my eye infection don't I need something that goes in my eye? Thanks for any replies!

can eye infections spread through objects?

like if a person with an eye infection or pink eye touches my paper, and then i touch it, will carry the infection? does it live on inanimate objects? if so, how long does it take to die? should i disinfect everything i touched?
----------

Depends on what the cause of the conjunctivitis is.
Cases of pinkeye that are caused by bacteria and viruses are contagious. (Conjunctivitis caused by allergies or environmental irritants are not.)

A child can get pinkeye by touching an infected person or something an infected person has touched, such as a used tissue. In the summertime, pinkeye can spread when kids swim in contaminated water or share contaminated towels. It also can be spread through coughing and sneezing. Doctors usually recommend keeping kids diagnosed with contagious conjunctivitis out of school, day care, or summer camp for a short time.

Someone who has pinkeye in one eye can also inadvertently spread it to the other eye by touching the infected eye, then touching the other one.

Why do I keep getting eye infections? This is the third time this year. Any tips?

Last year I was susceptible as well. I do have grandchildren and I know they can pass on infections easily but I have not seen the younger family for over a week of recent. And of course I am always washing my hands during the course of a day.

I have been bathing my eyes with water and salt water and have been to the chemist for Brolene. Anyone got any home remedies to help ease the discomfort?

Thank you in advance for your contribution.
----------

Sounds like an allergy. Takes ages to find the cause if it is, a process of elimination.
My mum has something called blepharitis, cause unknown, but it's quite common. It's an imflammation of the eyelids. You need to bathe your eyes with cooled, boiled water, and use a soothing eye gel, on a regular basis. Your doc can send you for a check up for this.
Another suggestion if you want to try homeopathic remedies, is tabs called Euphrasia 6, by Weleda, you can buy it in health shops. It stopped my conjunctivitus quite quickly, even though I'd been given creams, gels etc by the doc and had been suffering for nearly 18 months. I went to the health shop in desperation, and I'm glad that I did.  (+ info)

Is there any knowledge about eye infections w/weird discharge and irritation? Home Remedies?

I awoke to right eye matted shut, then later began to turn red along with white-yellowish thick-like discharge coming out of nowhere.2nd day my left eye began same process, now i've got major irritation, a burning sensation along with this weird gooey stuff. I've no insurance so doctor is out of question. Curiosity leaves me to wonder if there is a home remedy or ancient chinese secret i could follow....?

If this is a bacterial infection, antibiotics are the best route. See if there's a free clinic in your area - if so, they may be able to provide you with a free consultation, and most antibiotics are only $4 at a variety of pharmacies.
Unfortunately, this infection has already spread once, so you are taking the risk that if you wait for treatment, it will spread again - your eyes are very closely connected to your sinuses, ears, and brain.  (+ info)
