How to get over my benign fasciculation syndrome?

Okay, I have benign fasciculation syndrome (BFS) and everyone keeps telling me to ignore it. BFS is when different muscles/nerves in your body twitches because the nerves are in an "excited" state. Along with twitching, there's body jerks where my body jumps. This started my sophmore year in high school and I am now a senior. I am really trying to have this stop and there is no cure and I haven't been given treatment yet, I don't know what the doctor is going to give me if she gives me anything. I try not to stress it but it has taken a toll on me. I am a very active person and now I don't want to go anywhere, not even school because I feel uncomfortable and I can't concentrate. Everyone keeps telling me to ignore it and it will go away on it's own time but I really don't know how and I don't know what to do but I feel like i'm fighting with my body and i've lost all control of my body. My eye has been twitching like crazy so i put a clothespin on my eye and no matter how much it hurt I kept it there all last night because I didn't feel the twitch with it on my eye and when I woke up today there's a big bump and it's black where the pin was, I really feel like i'm losing myself and even though I got into college already, I feel like I messed up my senior year not being able to focus. What do I do?

Start eating foods rich in Magnesium, almonds being the best source. Take a supplement as well.

Magnesium helps to relax the muscles.

Omega 3 oils - olive oil, flaxseed oil, evening primrose oil all these oils help give you healthy nerves so use them in salads, cooking, take by teaspoon full or as supplements.  (+ info)

Benign Fasciculation Syndrome. Please help me out (crying, long)?

I am so mad. I think I have BFS. I have had it for over a year. I have been trying to get it to stop and I can't. I get muscle twitches everywhere. My eyelid, lip, cheek, neck, shoulder, arm, finger, thigh, ankle, foot. It's annoying. I get it at least 400 times a day. I'm serious. I'm only 15 and I have to go through this. I eat bananas because people say it helps and it doesn't. I seriously am so mad at life. I contemplate suicide everyday. I know, I won't, but it's really annoying the hell out of me. How can I stop this annoying thing? People say it wears off but yeah... it's not wearing off. I can't just "not think" about it, when it's happening ALL the time.

I can't even stop 'stress' if that's one of the causes for it. Because I am always stressed at school. You can't stop it. I feel like there is something wrong with me and I really feel like crying all the time. I get so mad and vent on others when I know there is no reason for it. I just want this to finally come to an end. Please help me out in anyway you can. Thank you, with all my love.

`Chris

I have a muscle twitch (or fasciculation I think...) Should I get it checked?

I was sitting in class, when I noticed my right arm, around my elbow area and forearms started twitching. At first I thought it was nothing serious then I realized it got worse and it wouldn't stop. It lasted about 5 hours until it stopped completely. I'm just wondering if it's anything serious whether I should get it checked or just let it slide by. If this helps, I'm 19 years old, never had any health complication and I tend to lift heavy when working with weights. Thanks in advance.

I've developed a twitch in my left hand; it's not going away. What could this be?

Should I worry about ALS? I feel weak, but then again I always feel weak. I have hypothyroidism and it's been hard to manage so I very often feel fatigued. I don't think I'm slurring my speech. I'm thinking that perhaps it's benign fasciculation syndrome.

Then again it's only been around for a few days and it's only in my left hand... so maybe I'm freaking out over nothing. I'm just prone to panicking, I guess.
----------

I'm sure you know this...but have your blood checked to see if you need to change the dosage on your thyroid meds. It is the kind of thing that needs to be tweaked from time to time and the symptoms you have may indicate a tweak is necessary.

Try changing your habits too and see if the hand thing is a result of too much of the same repetitive activity...like being on stupid YA all the time! Go outside and play for a while and leave the computer off and see if it just goes away. It will be good for you anyway even if not. Go climb a tree or something :-)  (+ info)

my husband has spasms and fatigue Help

My husband for about a year now has been having spasms and fatigue all over his body. He has gone to the dr and they cant seem to find anything, he has gone to a MS Dr and a chiro. Anyone ever heard of this? The one dr said it could be Benign fasciculation syndrome. any suggestions?
my husband for a while complained of always being cold. i have not noticed it lately but he has before. keep me updated
----------

It sounds similar to my husband. He has fatigue, is cold-natured, and has muscle cramps. He has had lots of blood tests and an MRI. They still have not found out the real cause.
My husband also has low blood pressure. He was checked for Addison's and it was negative.  (+ info)

I tested positive for Tuberculosis. Could it be due to HIV infection?

I had unprotected sex in march of 2005 and was at high risk of HIV exposure/infection. I was tested three times - ELISA only, no Western Blot - in the following three months. My last test was almost a full three months after potential exposure. I tested negative all three times.

However, I have had a number of strange symptoms over these past two years, none of which were present before my potential exposure. These include but are not limited to: peripheral neuropathy/paresthesia, occasional fasciculation and/or involuntary tremors, and various skin lesions. And this week I tested positive for Tuberculosis via a PPD (tuberculin sensitivity/Mantoux test) test.

I would like to know how likely it is that my positive PPD is a result of immunosupression from HIV infection. I cannot think of any other reason for testing positive (discarding the possibility of a false positive), and do plan on being tested for HIV as soon as possible, but I would like to hear from others first.

Thank you
I forgot to mention that I tested negative for TB a few months before incurring in high risk sexual activity (around December 2004).

In other words, my exposure (or possible full-on infection) to TB probably took place AFTER the aforementioned high-risk sexual activity.
TROY:

Thank you, but did you read my question? I know TB infection "has nothing to do" with HIV infection in and of itself, but like I said: I was at high risk for HIV infection two years ago.

I know for a fact that people infected with HIV who are significantly immunosupressed are likely to acquire TB infection and a significant percentage of positive TB individuals are also positive for HIV... hence my worries.
Oh, by the way, I was re-tested for HIV yesterday, a few hours after testing positive for TB. My question (as evidenced from my incessant editing) is probably symptomatic of my uneasiness and anxiety over my results, which will arrive in approximately two weeks.
----------

No, a positive TB test is actually an example of an immune HYPERSENSITIVITY. It means you have been exposed to but not necessarily infected with TB, it has nothing to do with HIV.
I'll clarify, the TB test has nothing to do with HIV. you can test postive without being infected with TB, just being exposed. I have a classmate who just tested postive for TB but has no signs of the disease and is perfectly healthy.
All I am saying is don't base your worries about HIV on the TB test. Until your HIV test comes back, just focus on further testing and Treatment of TB.  (+ info)

Oncology & Radiotherapy?

I had breast cancer two yrs ago. Had a mastectomy and all lymph nodes removed. Six months after treatment I was diagnosed by my gp with lower motor neurone and fasciculation. My legs are weak especially when walking up hill.
My question:
Will this ever go or am I always going to have this?
Can anyone tell me please
My dr said it was the effects of the treatment
The chemo I had was 4 of AC and & 4 of Taxol and 31 sessions of radiotherapy. Anyone had this chemo?

Do you know any cure for this patient in the world? She is getting paralyzed?

medical report on Mrs.
This (over 30) year old lady is suffering from severe progressive weakness and wasting of upper and lower limbs.
She has been healthy until 3 years ago when she developed weakness of body feet and later on weakness and die wasting of both hands which was associated with fasciculation of upper and lower part of the body. On examination which was performed one month ago her significant neurological findings were:
1. Normal mental state
2. Normal cerebellar test
3. No sensory' deficit
4. Difficulty in swallowing in
5. Tongue fasciculation
6. Severe weakness of all limbs causing wheelchair bound
7. Generalized hyper reflexia with bilateral up going toe.
Investigations:
Her MRI of spinal cord was normal but her EMG showed significant finding in favor of motor neuron disease.

My view of disease is that only the body can really cure itself. A disease means that the body is lacking something it needs for good health (nutitional, physical, emotional, psychological) or it is being attacked by toxins and parasites.

As well as seeking expert medical diagnoisis, try alternative treatments such as homeopathy, chiropractic etc. I'm not recommending them, I just think that in this case anything is worth trying.

Above all I would say ensure she has the best diet and also high dosage nutritional supplements. This will help if not cure.

An interesting psychiatric therapy is Janov's primal therapy, which he apparently does produce physiological changes as a result of the psychiatric cure. sometimes a physical disease has a psychological cause - i.e. is a symptom of a psychological problem (which is not necessarily a mental illness).

Another interesting source is Hulda Clark, who claims to have found the cause of many illnesses to be specific toxins and parasites. (She has a website.)

I'm sorry I can't give a definite answer to your question.  (+ info)

Unusual symptoms.?

I have had many seemingly unrelated symptoms but together they really are starting to bother me. If any of the following touch a cord with anyone please let me know if there is something I can do about it.

I am a 35 year old female.

I am experiencing:

Hot flashes (feels like heating from the inside out)
Hair loss
Constant Fatigue
Severe and constant muscle fasciculation in my right calf (for over a year)
Charlie horses in the same calf frequently
Muscle weakness (rubbery feeling) in my thighs
A general lack of interest in anything

I thought I was depressed due to my fatigue and lack of interest, so I saw a psychiatrist and am now on Effexor. The depression has improved slightly, but I am still tired all of the time and have no interest in any of my old hobbies.
Anything you have to tell me is great. Thank you
----------

you should ask the doctor if he can check your hormone levels, it could be the beginning of menopause. i'm on hrt and it sure helps, without it i can't sleep with all the hot flashes, so i'm always tired, restless legs syndrome, unable to concentrate which leads to no interest in anything, and weakness. i do loose a lot of hair but still have plenty, but it's not as big in an elastic. there is other things that can help relieve the symptoms like black cohash and evening primrose oil or soya milk. but i still think you should talk to your doc. take care.  (+ info)
