What is the deficiency disease for folic acid?

another name is folacin.
does any body know the other name for it?
----------

Folic acid (folinic acid, folacin, pteroylglutamic acid) was first isolated from spinach leaves (its name derives from the Latin folium meaning "leaf") in 1964 and early on was found to be essential in the prevention of anemia in animals. Later it was discovered that ensuring that mothers had adequate folic acid levels could prevent neural tube defects in human babies.  (+ info)

folic acid and iron deficiency what foods have them in?!?

Hi, my doc told me im anemic to the bone and very low on iron and folic acid,
he has given me pills but i hate taking them as they taste awful ( can taste them for an hour after ive taken them and its 3 times a day!)
so what foods can i eat that are healthy and have got folic acid and iron in them?
( i know of spinach which i am trying to eat often!)
----------

Red Meat!!

Spinach needs Vitiman C to be eaten with it for the body to obsorb the Iron.
Try drinking orange juice with it.
(sorry, i know it sounds yuck)

thanks 4 answers quick explanation have B12 and folic acid deficiency dr referred me for an endoscopy?

Went to see Dr. cos felt odd had blood test showed B12 and folic acid deficiency often feel bloated after eating and quite often sick also suffer from acid heartburn thought was maybe over eating Dr. sent me for endoscopy said had inflammation in lower stomach and upper bowel took biopsy recommended gluten and wheat free diet until results come through which takes 3 weeks gave me leaflet on coeliac disease
----------

Oh brother! Did your doctor talk to you about the lack of stomach acid? Do you eat meat from commercial cows that are fed grain? Did he show you a simple test to do with foods you eat to see if you are allergic to them rather than waiting 3 weeks of not eating gluten?

Doctors are NOT trained in nutrition and there are a lot of "C" students out there "practicing" medicine.

The acid indigestion is a very strong indication (99.999%) that you have hypochloridia (the lack of stomach acid). The bloating feeling is putrefying, rotting food that is not being broken down in your stomach due to the lack of stomach acid. As the food breaks down, it gives off methane gas and you feel bloated.

Vitamin B-12 is found in meat and that must be broken down in your stomach by the stomach acid. If you have low stomach acid, you will not be breaking it down and can become deficient. Folic acid is a product of the intestinal flora making it in your intestines. If you have taken ANY antibiotics, yours is destroyed.

To tell if you have an allergy to anything, you can do a simple test called the "Coca's Pulse Test." It is very accurate and you can do it yourself in a few minutes for each item you want to test. Just sit in a chair and come to rest for about 5 minutes. Take your pulse for a full 1 minute (not the 15 sec. multiply by 4 thing). Then put whatever you want to test in your mouth and chew it for 30 seconds. Then take your pulse again. If you find it is faster by 6 beats, you are allergic or have a sensitivity to it. If you have type "O" blood, use 4 beats as the criteria instead of 6. It's that simple.

In order to be allergic, the substance has to contain amino acids (the things that make up proteins).

To fix the acid indigestion, you need to get some Betaine HCL from a once living source and take it after each meal. Don't get the stuff from the health food or pharmacy because it is all synthetic chemical based and is not good for you. Go to: (800) 370 - 3447 and order the following:

Betaine HCL --- take 4 of these after each meal
HCL activator -- take 2 of these after each meal
Digest ------------ take 2 of these BEFORE the meal
Probiotic -------- take 1 of these 1/2 hour before breakfast and 1 one
hour after dinner.

I would also get the product they call "Max Stress B" and take 1/4 tsp. first day then gradually increase it to 2 tsp. after 10 days. Do this for about a month. It will help your digestion and liver greatly. Then you can take about 1/4 tsp. or non at all if you continue taking the probiotics.

The inflammation in your lower stomach can be due to H.Pylori bacteria from the low stomach acid. If you get an irritation from taking the Betaine HCL, you may have to take an antacid for about 4 or 5 days and then stop that and start the HCL.

good luck to you  (+ info)

Folic Acid?

I have read a lot of articles that say not getting enough folic acid can increase the risk of birth defects, especiall neural tube defects. Everything I've read says that you need it most within the first 28 days of pregnancy, which is before you have even realized you're pregnant. As soon as I found out, I started taking prenatal vitamins, but I definitely wasn't getting much folic acid at all before then. Does a deficiency in folic acid pose a large risk for birth defects?
----------

supposedly yes. both of my pregnancies I was unaware of until I was two months along, and they were fine. people have been having babies for centuries... dont get too scared about the things you read. its natural, its normal. even starving women in Africa still have babies... :) relax, dont let them scare you! good luck with your pregnancy and baby, and God bless!!!  (+ info)

mention the biochemical role of folic acid in preventing folic acid deficiency anaemia?

Folate deficiency anemia. Treatment involves eating a healthy diet and taking folic acid supplements as prescribed by your doctor. In most cases, folic acid supplements are taken orally. It usually takes a month or longer to correct folate deficiency anemia. If you're someone who can't absorb folate easily, you may need to take folic acid supplements for life.

In the form of a series of tetrahydrofolate compounds, folate derivatives are substrates in a number of single-carbon-transfer reactions, and also are involved in the synthesis of dTMP (2'-deoxythymidine-5'-phosphate) from dUMP (2'-deoxyuridine-5'-phosphate). It helps convert vitamin B12 to one of its coenzyme forms and helps synthesize the DNA required for all rapidly growing cells.
The pathway leading to the formation of tetrahydrofolate (FH4) begins when folate (F) is reduced to dihydrofolate (FH2), which is then reduced to tetrahydrofolate (FH4). Dihydrofolate reductase catalyses both steps.
Methylene tetrahydrofolate (CH2FH4) is formed from tetrahydrofolate by the addition of methylene groups from one of three carbon donors: formaldehyde, serine, or glycine. Methyl tetrahydrofolate (CH3–FH4) can be made from methylene tetrahydrofolate by reduction of the methylene group; formyl tetrahydrofolate (CHO-FH4, folinic acid) results from oxidation of methylene tetrahydrofolate.
In other words:
F → FH2 → FH4 → CH2=FH4 → 1-carbon chemistry
A number of drugs interfere with the biosynthesis of folic acid and tetrahydrofolate. Among them are the dihydrofolate reductase inhibitors (such as trimethoprim and pyrimethamine), the sulfonamides (competitive inhibitors of para-aminobenzoic acid in the reactions of dihydropteroate synthetase), and the anticancer drug methotrexate (inhibits both folate reductase and dihydrofolate reductase).  (+ info)

Folic acid deficiency?

I recently found out that I have a folic acid/B12 deficiency. Can anyone tell me what foods have a high folic acid concentration? (Please bear in mind that I am a VEGITARIAN) Also, could it be linked to my insomnia and/or pale skin? I am 16, female and otherwise healthy, besides eczema.
----------

Folic acid is found in green leafy vegetables (such as spinach, etc), so that shouldn't be a problem for a vegetarian like you. Vit B12, however, is found in red meat. Your doctor needs to determine exactly what you are deficient in. Folic acid and B12 deficiency looks exactly the same on blood tests but some more tests can be done to determine if you are only deficient in either folic acid or B12 or both.

To your second question, the answer is yes. Folic acid and Vit B12 deficiency can cause anemia, which can make you pale. Not sure about the insomnia.  (+ info)

What diseases can cause a deficiency of B12 and/or Folic acid in Humans?

Thank you to all the answerers.

I have a folic acid deficiency and I was wondering how long until I feel better? I am taking folic acid supplements and have added vegetables high in folic acid to my diet however by the end of the day I start to feel the symptoms again (weakness, tingling in arms and legs, trouble keeping balance when walking etc.) I have read anywhere from 5 days to 2 weeks for symptoms to go away, has anyone ever had this and if so what was your experience with it?

PLEASE PLEASE tell me anything you know
i don't want to ask the doctor tomorrow because i want to know today
----------

Just get the injections and pills. How low is your folic acid and B12? The most common complications of both is megaloblastic anemia and B12 deficiency also causes neurological symptoms (SCD of the spinal cord). If you're pregnant, your child may have neural tube defect or other abnormalities. The others complications are not as common so don't stress too much...ask your doctor to be honest what he thinks may be the complications you may have. Don't believe everything you see in the internet...some of the journals just writes down every possible complications but you should also be aware how many manifests them...it could be a really really small percentage and the patients may have other co-morbidities. It's ok to research but take everything you read on the internet with a grain of salt. Better to ask your doctor in your case. Hope everything works out for you.  (+ info)
