What are some foods that have folic acid in them?

My doctor told me that I don't need to take folic acid any more but I would like to eat more foods that are high in folic acid but I don't know really what has folic acid in it. Thanks.
----------

Dark green, leafy vegetables
Whole wheat bread
Lightly cooked beans and peas
Nuts and seeds
Sprouts
Oranges and grapefruits
Liver and other organ meats
Poultry
Fortified breakfast cereals and enriched grain products

One cup of orange juice provides half the RDA for folate, underscoring how easy a nutrient it is to consume. Food processing destroys 50 percent to 90 percent of the folate in foods, as it is very susceptible to heat. It is really important to lightly cooked vegetables as they retain their nutrient value the best when cooked minimally in water -- through steaming, stir-frying, or microwaving.  (+ info)

How long should you be on prenatls & folic acid before getting pregnant?

I've heard several ppl say to start taking a prenatal with folic acid when you start trying. And others say take it for a few months before. Which is accurate? And is an OTC prenatal just as good as a Rx?
----------

There is no set time but you want to have the folic acid in your system anyway. Even for women that are not pregnant we need 400mcg daily.

Now you don't have to take the prenatals while TTC but it helps because then you know you have a good dose of the folic acid and other vitamins.
The reason why we need this B vitamin is it helps to stave off spina bifida and other spinal issues as the baby develops. Since the spine is the first to develop it's good to have some already in your system. It took a while for us this time around (about 7 cycles) and I started taking my prenatal right away as soon as we started trying.

Yes most brands and off brands are the same. You want to have at least 400mcg of the follate of folic acid though most prenatals have about 800 -1000mcg. The diff with a perscribed one is they can talor the vitamin for your specific needs. For most of us though the OTC is fine.

Best of luck and blessings:)  (+ info)

Is Folic Acid more important with IVF than a regular pregnancy?

We all know that Folic Acid is very important in a regular pregnancy for the baby health.
Is it more important when undergoing IVF or equally important?
----------

It doesn't matter which way you conceive, it's best for the baby. Pregnant mothers who are deficient in Folic acid have a high chance of having a baby with Spinal Bifida as well as some other nerve related disorders. The ddeficiencydoesn't have to be very high so it's better just to take it. Most mmultivitaminsnow have it. The sooner you start taking it the better.
Things that can help conception with ivf--taking a mmultivitamin(certain vitamins (c, b's, e and minerals like sselenium zinc and copper) increase fertility and implanting success.
DHEA taking 75 mg has shown to make the ovaries respond like young healthy ovaries. It's shown high results (women on it have more eggs retrieved and better grades with the eggs that fertilize) when taken for at least 3 to 4 months.
PABA taken at 300 mg helps IVF response.
Stay away from herbs! A lot of them will work against the fertility meds including CChaste Berry Even Raspberry Leaves are questionable.
Ask your RE about Arginine. It's an amino acid that increases blood circulation (aiding hormones meds to the follies) to the uterus and ovaries but I read on aarticlethat was against it with IVF but strangely fine with clomid???  (+ info)

How much Folic acid should be in a Prenatal vitamin?

I was checking my Prenatal vitamins that were prescribed by my doctor. It contains 1mg of Folic Acid. Shouldn't there be more? Or is that more important after you've conceived? I would think since my doctor prescribed it, it would be fine... I was just surprised. Maybe someone can inform me. Thanks!
----------

I did some research and it's actually 800-1,000mcg if your pregnant. My multivitamin that I was taking before I got pregnant had 400mcg and now my prenatal vitamins have 800mcg, but 1mg actually equals 1,000mcg. So your fine your getting the right amount.  (+ info)

how much folic acid should a woman take a day to help conceive?

TTC #1. I was just wondering if taking more then 400mg of folic acid a day would increase fertility. If so how much?
----------

Folic acid has no affect on fertility. The purpose of taking folic acid prior to pregnancy is because of the benefits to the baby's development and it lowers the risks of defects. You take it before you get pregnant because if you wait until after you find out you are pregnant you have already missed some of the important benefits of the first few weeks.  (+ info)

What are the benefits of Folic Acid?

I am not planning on having a baby now, but I heard that I can still benefit from Folic Acid - how?
----------

Folate and the synthetic form folic acid is used to produce and maintain new cells. It's needed to make red blood cells to prevent anemia. It's also used to make DNA and RNA and helps prevent changes to DNA which can lead to cancer.  (+ info)

Can forgetting to take your folic acid and daily vitamin cause spotting?

I forgot to take my prenatal vitamin and folic acid yesterday and now I am spotting. I don't need a pad or anything, but I am spotting. I have no cramps and no back pain? I spotted once mon and tuesday early in the morning when I had just taken my meds so I was just wondering? Or do you think I may be miscarrying. It is early in my pregnancy and am kinda freaking myself out.
----------

It will be nothing to do with not taking the Folic acid and vitamins hun.

You should see your Doctor about the spotting.

I had bleeding in one pregnancy at 6 weeks, and the baby was perfectly well, (although lost her later on due to something completely different)

I also had bleeding in another pregnancy at 6 weeks and miscarried.

So it doesn't always mean you will lose the baby, but you need to see a Doctor to find out what's going on.

On top of that try and rest.

Good luck xx  (+ info)

What is folic acid ? Does it really help to prevent a heart attack ?

Give alternatiave names of folic acid i.e. local or country names. Also tell in what food items the folic acid is present. How much folic acid do I need as daily intake. I am 56 and 186 pounds, with sligh B.P. problem.
----------

Folic acid is a B vitamin, I think it is B8. Also called Folacin, and the natural form in foods is Folate. It is essential for the synthesis of DNA. Deficiency symptoms are constipation, anemia, slowed metabolism, fatigue, depression. Deficiency also can cause birth defects. Best sources include liver, green leafy vegetables, especially spinach, broccoli, peanuts. We typically need 4-600 micrograms (.4 - .6 milligrams) daily, but for people with high blood levels of homocycteine doctors usually recommend 800mcg or more. Yes, folic acid does help prevent a heart attack by reducing the homocycteine which greatly facilitates buildup of plaque in the arteries. B vitamins work together, so your doctor will probably want you to supplement your intake of B12 and B6. There is an Rx form called Foltx, but it might not have enough 12 and 6. Some people think that Folate, the natural form in foods, is much better than Folic Acid. It also is available in a supplement. Be sure to talk to your doctor first before beginning any B vitamin supplements. Also, if you take a multiple vitamin, check its contents, many include 400mcg of folic acid. Be careful of what you might read on the internet. There's at least one site that confused milligrams with grams.  (+ info)

Is there enough folic acid in the Kaiser prental vitamins?

I' am 8 weeks pregant and have had a scare with spotting at 6 weeks no more spotting since then. But discharge and a few pains in lower stomach. Is this normal for 8 weeks, and about the vitamins, my mom suggests that Folic acid should be very important to take as well.
----------
