Is it true open fractures have little blood?

My friend said he had an open fracture but there was very little blood I just don't see how that's possible with a bone sticking right out of your skin. Someone please explain to me how this is possible?
----------

An open fracture would bleed quite a lot. If the bone is completely fractured (i.e. snapped in half) then not only will the bone be bleeding copiously (because bones have a very rich blood supply) but the skin would also be bleeding as well.

If it was a very small fracture that only punctured a tiny piece of skin (which would still be classified as 'open') then it wouldn't bleed too much, but the classic 'open' fracture with two ends of a bone coming out of the skin bleeds. Lots.  (+ info)

What might be causing these mysterious rib bone fractures?

A friend has been having mysterious fractures of her ribs, with no significant bone pain prior to them. She is in her 70's and had breast cancer a few years ago, which appeared to have been treated successfully. She has been to several doctors and had many diagnostic tests including a needle biopsy, but so far no definitive diagnosis. Now they are are recommending an open biopsy.

What could be causing these fractures? One obvious possibility is bone metastases from her breast cancer, but the symptomatology seems somewhat atypical for that.
----------

It is very likely mets from her breast cancer. See it happen all the time.

How do you control bleeding when someone has an open fracture?

NOTE: There must be minimal movement, the person is bleeding from the open fracture.

What materials can you use?
How would it be used?

Can you still use the roller bandage and sterile gauze to stop the bleed?
Would you apply pressure to wound and use the appropriate pressure point? WHat is the best thing to do and use?

OK. lastly no, i'm not asking b/c i'm experiencing these things at the moment, or don't know that the victim must go to ER.

DUH! everyone knows that!

I just want to know as a trained proffesional what will you do and specially if the person keeps bleeding will haveing the roller bandage. Which most likely you would have to use a pressure point.

please help I need to know this.
----------

Open fractures tend not to bleed excessively because the bone provides direct pressure to the wound quite well. The fracture needs to be stabilized using gauze rolls and splinted in place. The bone needs to stay outside or there is a greatly increased chance of infection.

In the field, an EMT/Paramedic would also check the extremity for motor function, sensation and pulse before and after applying the splint. If there is no pulse, an attempt to gently move the extremity to regain pulse should be attempted or else the extremity below the fracture will die.  (+ info)

Is it possible for hand fractures to be missed on an x-ray?

I badly hit my hand 4 days ago, and had it x rayed 2 days ago. No fractures were found, so I have been wrapping it and icing it multiple times a day. tonight I noticed that my hand is still quite swollen, and my fingers are turning green and purple. I can't open or close a fist. Is it possible that I did fracture my hand and the x-ray tech just missed it?
----------

Its possible that the fracture just isnt showing up on the x-ray just yet. To help with your swelling, keep the hand above heart level (Statue of Liberty). The green and purple colors are not abnormal (bruising) and will change to six shades of the rainbow before the body reabsorbs it. Blood will pool to the lowest level and you are most likely not elevating the hand enough.

See your doctor and expect a repeat x-ray in another week or so ...  (+ info)
