How long would it take to get out of the hospital with 3 broken ribs and an arm with an open fracture?

Also, what kind of cast would you need, if any?
This is for a novel I'm writing.
----------

For the broken ribs, You will probably need to stay for atleast 3 months. For the arm, I say about 3-10 weeks depending on how bad it's fractured. You would need a cast for your arm, just a regular one. I don't think they'll put on a cast for your ribs because they'll make you stay in bed for a while.  (+ info)

I am recovering from an open fracture in my elbow, my fingers are numb, is it normal and how long it'll take?

I have been in treatment for almost a month and a half and I am doing agressive terapy after surgery for an open fracture in my elbow, i was wearing the brace for one week and my fingers are numb, is this normal? will it recover? how long am I need for full recovering? I still can not reach my face or strech my arm. I want to be sure that I am in the right track to recover
----------

Try to be patient...what your experiencing is normal.....You probably had some nerve damage from the fracture, plus during the surgery to repair it, some of the minor nerves probably were unavoidably cut....You may not get all of your feeling back, or full range of motion either, but a month and a half unfortunately is not enough time to tell...keep up with your therapy....it may be a full year before you know how good you will be.....that's how long it took me....not from a fracture, but a serious illness...I was in therapy for 3 months, and it really did take about a year...  (+ info)

physical therapy excercises for ankle after open reduction repair of fracture?

don't have the opportunity to go to a professional PT person.....out of cast now for a week.
----------

Karen, here is the problem. You don't state what was fractured and what was done in the open reduction. The open reduction is associated with hardware being placed in the ankle but where and what is important. The ankle is most likely stiff and still at least somewhat swollen and that will require some work. All that I can give to you is some very generic exercises without specific information. Always start the exercises on your good side and not the injured as the results will be significantly better when done this way. Sit in a straight chair and roll the outer edge of the good foot out as far as possible and as hard as possible for 30 seconds and then rest it for 15 seconds. Repeat this twice more and then do the injured foot the same way 3 times. Next starting with the good foot roll the inner edge of the foot in and up as much as possible for 30 seconds and then rest for 15 seconds. Repeat this twice more and then do the same movements on the injured foot exactly the same way 3 times. From a long sitting position using the good ankle have the muscles of the foot pull the front of the foot up towards the shin as hard as you can for 30 seconds and then rest for 15 seconds. The only movement that occurs here is at the ankle and you will know that it is working as there will be a pulling in the calf. Repeat this twice more and then do the injured ankle exactly the same way 3 times. Lastly, starting with the good foot have the front of the foot push down as hard as possible for 30 seconds and then rest for 15 seconds. Repeat this twice more and then do the same movements on the injured foot exactly the same way 3 times. You should also be doing proprioceptive exercises but these should be done with professional supervision until you have the hang of them. The movements given to you should be done at least twice a day and realistically more than that to improve function as quickly as possible.  (+ info)

Hurts to open and close jaw after being punched in the mouth?

Went to the bar last night fighting ensued and ended up with me being sucker punched on the left side of the jaw. Now this morning I wake up to alot of pain on the right side when I try to bite down or yawn. Will this go away after a week or so of alot of icing and heat compression or could I have a fracture or dislocation? Also bit down in front of mirror and teeth are still lined up
----------

Similar thing happened to me was punched on the nose in a nightclub and broke my nose. Was so drunk at the time didnt feel anything it just bled like crazy. I went up to him said what was that for but was having too fun a time to hit him back, luckily the bouncers saw everything. I went to the toilet to stop the bleeding and one of them came to tell me they'd kicked him out. I continued my night had a good time then when I woke up in the morning my teeth felt so numb and my face was stiff, still it was a good night though. I went to the doctors about 3 months later as my nose hinders my breathing they said they'd have to re set it and as it was already healed I'd have to go into surgery. I said forget about it, I'll just breathe through my mouth. My advice is go to the doctors asap they can fix anything whilst its still healing no fuss.  (+ info)

How can i tell if my stress fractures are healed?

Sustained stress fractures during bct. Has been roughly eight weeks since. How do I know if it's safe to run on them again? There is still slight pain if I jog, but walking is no problem. Is this just residual pain? Is any pain at all at this point normal?

What is the best treatment for spinal compression fractures?

My husband is 83 years old and has numerous compression fractures in his spine and we are trying to find ways to relieve his pain. Any help would be appreciated.
----------

Does your husband have recent urinary/bowel incontinent problem or motor weakness or sensory loss in both legs? If so see a physician ASAP as he may be suffering from cauda equina syndrome. It is also advisable to see the physician as an MRI is likely to determine the extent of damage. Spinal decompression surgery might be warranted if spinal damage is severe. Unfortunately, at this point it sounds like over the counter medication will provide minimal help. NSAID (naproxen) can alleviate some inflammation and provide some relief, but it sounds like you need something stronger that only a physician can prescribe. Best wishes.  (+ info)

How to fix compound/open fracture?

If the bone has been broken and came through the skin, how would a doctor fix it?
----------

Open fractures require immediate medical attention due to the risk of infection. Infection in a broken bone is a bad, bad thing.
Usually you have to have surgery to reposition the bone and screws or plates inserted (sometimes these are permanent) to hold it in position. Sometimes traction is needed to hold the bone straight ( mostly for upper leg fractures)
if you are sitting there with a compound fracture, get yourself straight down to the ER pronto.  (+ info)

Where is the evidence that osteoporosis causes bone fractures?

Please refer me to well-controlled, peer-reviewed studies that show:
1) Osteoporosis causes bone fractures.
2) Fosamax and other biophosphonates not only slow down bone density loss or increase bone density, but also prevent fractures.
Thanks.
----------

Its common sense if the bones become less massive and deteriorate go on yahoo and do a image seach .The bones of women are 35 % less massive than men so they are more susucpetible to back problems than men so women should really taske it easy on there back.  (+ info)

How long does it take for fractures on top of foot to heal?

I have 2 small fractures on the dorsal metatarsal of my left foot. How much time will it take for them to heal on the average. I'm 60 years old, female and in better than average physical condition.
----------

Ouch!
They say it normally takes about 6 weeks for most things to heal. The metatarsals form part of the arch of the foot and are weight bearing.

http://www.podiatrychannel.com/anatomy/

Because they have to bear so much weight, it would probably be a good idea to follow up with physiotherapy to strengthen this area after the rest of waiting the 6 weeks. Are you using crutches now? You might want to go to a cane for a bit till the foot is strengthened, and a cushion orthotic (arch support) for awhile also.

This answer is not meant to constitute medical advise, so check with your doctor for follow up.  (+ info)
