How can I cut fructose from my families diet?

My family is obese. I have a cousin who set his family to a no fructose diet. They have lost alot of weight. I am going to try to do that with my family. What foods should we stay away from? Any other info would help.
----------

The fructose that is found in fruit is OK and is not fattening but you must avoid syrups, molasses and treacle that are loaded with fructose and other sugars such as sucrose.

Table sugar or white sugar (which is sucrose) is fattening and also foods loaded with added white sugar such as sweets, desserts, cakes, biscuits and cookies and these should be avoided.

Even honey which is mostly fructose and sucrose should also be avoided. It is OK in very small amounts such as for sweetening purposes.

Raw fruit is not fattening but dried fruit in large amounts can be fattening as it contains a lot more sugar (fructose and sucrose) than raw fruit.

You can see further information in a web search for "intrinsic sugar" + "extrinsic sugar".  (+ info)

How long has high fructose corn syrup been used in the USA?

Here in the UK our soft drinks, ice cream, condiments etc are made with cane or beet sugar.

I hear Americans say high fructose corn syrup is unhealthy; so how long has it been used and why was it changed from sugar?
----------

In 1977 there were a series of sugar taxes imposed on imported sugar so the food manufacturers in the U.S. began looking for cheaper substitutes. The U.S. farmers were struggling because of cheaper imports and because of corn being substituted with soy in the production of margarines and shortenings, so the US Secretary of Agriculture enabled the development of high fructose corn syrup as a way for farmers to use their corn surpluses.  (+ info)

How can I find the amounts of Fructose in fruit?

I am doing a science project on the amounts of fructose in various types of fruit compared the the amount of liquids also within the fruit. Can anyone tell me a website or a way to find the amounts of fructose in various fruits? Thank You

Data obtained at http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ [13] All data with a unit of g (gram) are based on 100 g of a food item. The fructose / glucose ratio is calculated by dividing the sum of free fructose plus half sucrose by the sum of free glucose plus half sucrose.

Fructose is also found in the synthetically manufactured sweetener, high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Hydrolyzed corn starch is used as the raw material for production of HFCS. Through the enzymatic treatment, glucose molecules are converted into fructose [12]. There are three types of HFCS, each with a different proportion of fructose. The most common are HFCS-42, HFCS-55, and HFCS-90. The number for each HFCS corresponds to the percentage of synthesized fructose present in the syrup. HFCS-90 has the highest concentration of fructose, and is typically used to manufacture HFCS-55; HFCS 55 is used as sweetener in soft drinks, while HFCS-42 is used in many processed foods and baked goods.

I copied chart but in transfer it is unreadable so go to website .It is very clear:

So what exactly is the difference between Fructose and High Fructose Corn Suryp(HFCS)?

Exactly what is the difference? Are they both "chemically" fructose?
----------

One is pure, the other is a "blend" [actually a partial conversion].

FRUCTOSE is a simple sugar found in many fruits and vegetables, where it is normally accompanied by GLUCOSE, and other sugars.

Corn syrup starts out as pure GLUCOSE. "High" FRUCTOSE corn syrup has had some of this GLUCOSE turned into FRUCTOSE.

The two sugars in HFCS are also the components of SUCROSE (table sugar), just not in combined form.

How fast does your metabolism get when you exercise?

I mean when you are exercising at that very moment and after. Does your metabolism really get fast? What if you dont exercise at all one or two days, will your metabolism still be fast?
----------

The rate of your metabolism is dependent upon your age, sex, weight, body composition, etc. Your metabolism will increase while you are exercising to provide your body with the fuel it needs, but the number of calories burned or the rate at which it increases depends on the type of exercise you are doing. Studies have shown that if you do high intensity exercise, your metabolism will stay revved up for anywhere from 24-48 hours later. Doing resistance training (with some sort of weight) will increase your lean muscle tissue. This in itself increases your metabolism, even when you are not working out. The more lean muscle tissue you have, the faster your metabolism will be.  (+ info)

How long will it take for my metabolism to adjust to a regular Diet and exercise program?

I am 40 years old and diabetic and have decided to start a diet and exercise program in order to lose weight and get healthy. I was wondering how long it would take for my metabolism to adjust to the diet and exercise program? Since I am 40 and diabetic will my body automatically boost my metabolism because of the diet and exercise program or will I have to take drastic measures in order to boost my metabolism?
----------

The best place to start would be light exercises until your ready to do more than say 10 minutes or so, second eating the right food like fruit and vegetables, and most of all don't give up hope, it will happening one day and unfortunate it can't happen overnight it takes time. I weigh 257.9lbs and am trying desperately to lose weight so I know were you come from. Try this website for low fat recipes.  (+ info)

How do you make High Fructose Corn Syrup?

Does anyone have the step by step instructions on how to make High Fructose Corn Syrup with the ingredients and amounts of each ingredients?
I watched King Corn and those two gentlemen made high fructose corn syrup in their house.
----------

I dont have the step by step instructions off the top of my head but I read about it once.

You wouldnt be able to make it in your home. Its a very scientific process and need you expensive factory machinery to do so.  (+ info)

What are the short-term and long-term effects of high fructose corn syrup?

I know that the corn growers of America state that it's good for you. NO! I know that it is in almost everything, is much cheaper to put in than healthy ingredients, and is terrible for you. How does it effect you in the short-term, and the long-term? I want to know what my generation will be like when we grow up, and if high fructose corn syrup will effect us in any way, mentally or physically. And what is it doing to us now? Is it a silent killer that will come and get us one day? Please help!
----------

HFCS should be avoided as much as possible as it can cause diabetes, obesity and other health problems that you can find in a web search for hfcs + "health hazards".  (+ info)

What is the difference between high fructose corn sweetener and high fructose corn syrup?

I can't find anything to state that they are different and a friend of mine is against high fructose corn syrup, yet her soda has high fructose corn sweetener.
----------

The food industry hides the amount of sugar in products by using different names for the same thing In a product.

They may have sugar in different forms down four times, but the one most people focus on is the first one. Some do not recgonize the other forms of sugar.

They do often use different types of sweetener such as glucose, sucrose levuloce, dextrose, maltose etc.

Fructose simply put is fruit, / vegetable sugar.  (+ info)
