How is it recovering after gallbladder surgery?

I have gallbladder stones and they need to remove my gallbladder. I go to the doctor tomorrow to find out what day. I was just wondering how long do you have to stay in the hospital and what is the pain like and things like that. I have to admit I'm pretty nervous even thou I've had 8 back surgeries.
----------

I had my gallbladder taken out labroscopicly last year. ( 4 small cuts)

Recovery is not to terrible.
You will likely experience gas pain , and nausea for some days.
Day 2 or so you may have some pain under your shoulder blades from the gas they used to "blow" you up rising in your tissues and some general body aches from positioning in the OR.

Expect changes in bowel habits, meaning your body has to adjust to the bile now going directly into your bowel, rather then storing in the gall bladder and dispensing as needed.

Generally speaking this will resolve over time.
Keep your follow up appointments and note any concerns you have in your recovery period.  (+ info)

Can anyone time me of any natural ways of healing my gallbladder?

I recently had a couple of gallbladder attacks, and 28 yrs old. Other than meat and fried foods to stay away from. Can anyone tell me other do's and don'ts , about maintaining a healthy gallbladder? Thank You.
----------

My husband had gallbladder trouble recently too. I would recommend staying away from meat and fried foods like you said... but also avoid carbonated drinks, caffeine, and dairy. Your liver and gallbladder are like yin and yang, so look online for a good liver cleanse - there are many to choose from online, so look around and find one you like the sounds of... start out with a short one (one or two days) and make sure it is very thorough with the details, instructions and what to expect. My husband and I both did a cleanse we found online, and although it worked... it was horrible tasting and I don't think I would do it again, so look around.
I do know that green apples and green pears are healthy for gallbladder, so eat as many of those as you can, and if you stay away from all the foods lists above, you should feel better. Eat as many fresh fruits and veggies as you can.
Good luck to you!!  (+ info)

Can a diseased gallbladder cause severe weight gain?

I have noticed in the past year that I've rapidly and severely gained a LOT of weight. I had my thyroid check in-depth and everything was normal. My doctor discovered that my gallbladder was diseased and I had it removed this morning. The surgeon said my gallbladder had been diseased for a long time. I am wondering if this diseased gallbladder has been the cause of my strange weight gian. Is this a possibility? If so, does that mean I can lose the weight now that the problem is gone?
----------

If you don't have thyroid problems, then it can be caused from the bad gall bladder. After I had mine taken out, I did lose weight. Did you ask your doctor about it? I would.  (+ info)

What does a high bilirubin count and a gallbladder ultrasound mean?

My doc informed me that I have a high bilirubin count in my blood and wants me to go in for a gallbladder ultrasound. I am a healthy 26 y.o. female. What could this mean? Is it serious?
----------

You may have gallstones. Gallstones can block the ducts leading from your gallbladder to your liver. That's why the doc wants an ultrasound to see if you have stones. Millions of people have them without problems. However, if the duct is blocked completely, it can cause problems with your liver or the gallbladder itself. There are various treatments to get rid of the stones. In some cases, it may require removing your gallbladder. It's a fairly routine surgery.  (+ info)

How long to wait to get navel pierced after gallbladder surgery?

I had my gallbladder out via laproscopic surgery nearly 2 months ago. In the new year I want to get my navel pierced and I wonder is this is going to be okay. The incision scar underneath my bellybutton will be fully healed, but I don't know if it will cause any problems for the piercing. Any help would be appreciated!
----------

Wait at least 8 weeks, so you can concentrate on getting better, and keeping you immune system happy. After that you should be okay :)

And if its going to be pierced through the scar tissue, you'll need to wait at least 6 months so it can heal properly and soften up. Though it dodesn't sound like it will, so it doesn't matter  (+ info)

How can you tell if you are having a gallbladder attack or gallstones?

I heard that a lot of problems such as acid reflux or bad gas can masquarade as a gallbladder attack. How do you know if it is the real thing?
----------

Sometimes you don't know. Gallbladder pain can also cause an ache in the upper right shoulder blade area as well. As a rule, if you associate the pain with just having eaten within the last hour, and the meal contained a fair amount of fat- you probably have gallbladder troubles. But the only way to know for sure is to do an ultrasound and see what you can see. There's no one symptom that clearly says "gallbladder attack", it's most often a collection of things.  (+ info)

What foods are not allowed if you have a gallbladder attack?

I have had two attacks in the last week that the doctor thinks may be gallbladder related. I am to eat only "safe" foods for the next few days and I am not sure what those are.
----------

You need to avoid spicy foods, acidic foods, high fiber and fibrous plants. This means nothing hot and spicy, no beans, no lettuce (other than iceberg), no tomatoes or citrus...

I am sure that if you call your doctor, he will prepare a list for you of things to avoid and you can just go pick it up from his office. They are there to help - all you have to do is ask!

Good luck and take care.  (+ info)

What are the chances of drinking water in a given neighborhood causing gallbladder damage?

Background: My daughter failed a hyta (sp?) test, had an endoscopy to rule out an ulcer, but passed that. So the docs are certain it's her gallbladder.
What's strange is that the neighbors across the street and down one house have three daughters who have had their gallbladders out. All these girls are teens.
AND how do I get the doc to take my concerns seriously, if this is a valid question?
Yes, we spoke to the doctor about it once already. Thus the concern that he's not taking our questions seriously. They're sending her gallbladder to the lab.
And I'll be sure to point out that we're on a separate water system than the rest of the area with a history of problems on our line.
----------

It may just run in their family.

Just ask the doctor.

I have found all those years of medical school are generally not wasted.  (+ info)

how soon after a gallbladder operation can I get back to the gym?

I've had my gallbladder extracted, which I'm glad of;And I know I can't do anything too strenuous for the next two to three weeks,But I have a rugby tour in 6 weeks time that I want to be prepared for .Would sprint training be ok in say 4 weeks?Similar experiances would be appreciated.
----------

You should enquire with your GP. Did the nurses on the ward not give you information as to what you can and can't do post op? I think personally you are cutting it a bit fine at 6 weeks. If you had an open cholecystectomy that is going to take months to heal as they had to cut through the muscle of your abdominal cavity to get to your liver. If they did a laproscopic cholecystectomy they put titanium clips on the bile duct and the arteries and veins to and from the gallbladder. Too much strenuous exercise would put too much pressure on these clips, and you would be in danger of one of them coming lose and you'd end up bleeding to death especially if the arterial clips came off. Just give the rugby tour a miss for your own health.  (+ info)
