How long does it take to recover after having your GallBladder removed?

How long does it take to recover after having your GallBladder removed?
Is it a In or Out Patient procedure?
Do you think I will be able to take care of my newborn by myself or will I need help?
----------

It's an outpatient procedure (assuming laproscopic here), but someone will need to be available to drive you home.

Recovery is usually complete in a week, though I would expect you to need some help the first two days, at least. A newborn is a lot of work, and I'm not sure you're supposed to be lifting anything at first.  (+ info)

What kind of pain medicine did you get after your gallbladder surgery?

Im having my gallbladder removed in a few days and Im worried Im going to get hydrocodone which I dont think is going to be enough for the pain. Im just curious to see what others got after the surgery.
----------

Surgeons will typically right for Percocet 5/235 mg tabs (5mg Oxycodone/325mg Tylenol), Vicodin 5/500mg (5mg Hydrocodone, 500mg Tylenol) -- standard dosing is 1-2 tabs every 4-6hrs as needed for pain. Oxycodone is stronger than Hydrocodone. Another option is Dilaudid (Hydromorphone).

It is important not to take too many Percocet or Vicodin because of the Tylenol component. More than 4000mgs per day puts the liver at risk for injury.  (+ info)

Is there a connection between high sugars and gallbladder disease?

Until two weeks ago my husband's diabetes had been under control the his sugars started creeping up. His dr changed his meds, and after a fatty meal( yes we know biggg mistake but people make them)he had a gallbladder attack. He is scheduled for an ultrasound tomorrow, but what i want to know is could the higher sugars have been caused by the dicey gallbladder?
----------

Yes.. the only logical answer is that if the gallbladder was inflamed- meaning that it had got infected- the infection can give rise to elevated blood sugar levels.
Also diabetic are more prone to get gallbladder diseases, especially stones, besides having more chances of pancreatitis and heart attacks.  (+ info)

What are the symptoms of gallbladder problems?

i had an ultrasound done and they told me that i have sludge and crystals in my gallbladder. has anyone had this? they said there should be pain on my right side below the ribs but it's actually at the center. could that happen?
----------

Yes, the pain can be at the center right underneath your ribs.Nausea, vomit, diarrhea and of course excruciating pain in your gallbladder area. The pain can also be extended to your back. Also, if you get a yellowish color in any part of your skin is a serious condition of your sick gallbladder.  (+ info)

How long do I have to wait after gallbladder removal surgery before trying to get pregnant?

I just found out that I need to have my gallbladder removed. We wanted to get pregnant by this December. If I remove my gallbladder in mid-October is it too soon to try to get pregnant in late November? How long should I wait? Thank you so much!!
----------

You need to ask your surgeon this. Gall bladder surgery can also have complications, but your surgeon would be able to tell you roughly when you can after an uncomplicated surgery. Chances are, you don't have to wait at all since this surgery is also performed during pregnancy (not preferred, but doable).  (+ info)

What problems can I expect after 7 years of a gallbladder laparoscopic?

I had a gallbladder removal 7 years ago,and now I am having a strange discomfort in that area.Could that be due to the operartion I had or could it something else?I went to the hospital and they made me all kind of blood test and all were negative.Serious answers please!
----------

I was warned that I could experience problems with scarring in the future. It wasn't something they said would be immanent, but that it was possible. Basically, the tissue inside has scars and can cause discomfort.
Good luck to you.  (+ info)

Gallbladder stones that cause nausea - what do you eat to make symptoms better?

I'm having a lot of trouble with gallstones and I'm having the whole organ taken out next month, but meanwhile, is there any food that is better than others to eat when you have gallbladder problems? And what food makes the symptoms worse? Or does food not really make a great impact when it comes to gallstones? I am not in pain by the way, for me the gallstones just cause nausea, but that's bad enough.

Thank you for any advice you may have to offer.
----------

Had mine out 4 years ago...I never really had typical pain either.
Food makes a big difference.
Avoid fried, fatty, greasy foods; caffeine; foods high in cholesterol....rapid weight loss.

BTW I also have GERD which I used to be confused about symptoms of gallstone & GERD.
Gallstone pain can also radiate to the back.

Good luck to you on your operation...it's a very common surgery & you go home the same day.  (+ info)

What do they do during gallbladder surgery?

I may have to have my gallbladder out and I'm scared. I've never had any surgery. My 2 biggest concerns are the breathing tube and the catheter. Do they put in and take out the tube when you are sedated? And do they use a catheter. I've had one before and HATED IT!
I'm really scared about the whole thing. Any advice would help!
----------

Surgeries of this kind used to be a seriously complicated procedure. It is now an OUTPATIENT procedure. After being NPO (nothing by mouth) after midnight the day before the surgery you will arrive at your facility and they will do vital signs, check to see you have not had food or drink for at least 12 hours and will see you have had your lab and xray work done. They will "put you to bed" and you will wait for the anethiest to come and talk to you about the IV and putting you to sleep, etc. After you are brought to the operating suite (room) they will start the IV (if they did not do so before bringing you in). They will hook you up to a vital signs monitering unit and clean your abdomen area where the incision will be made. The decision to use a catheter depends on your age and general condition. Relieving your self prior to going in is a good idea, if you can. They will administer the medication to put you to sleep BEFORE they insert the "breathing tube". The old way of opening you up from sternum to pubis is long gone. Now they make an incision about 1/4 of an inch to insert rod like instruments that will remove the gallbladder. They inject carbon dioxide into the cavity to expand and make room for the instruments to manover. This allows only the surgical area to be exposed and not other organs and connective tissue. Given the AVERAGE surgical time, you will be about 3 1/2 hours from start to finish (return to the room). This is getting there , preparation, surgery, recovery room time (usually an hour or a little more depending on your response to the medication) and return to your starting room. If there are no problems you will be released after you void (go to the bathroom). This is GENERAL overview and times and specific proceedure may vary with your doctor and hospital. While any surgery has risks involved, you will do fine. Being scared or nervous is a natural thing. Talk to your doctor and the nurses and find out all you can. Ask questions, it's your body.
